AL Gov: Any predictions?

I live in Atlanta and haven't kept up with anything related to Alabama politics for a long while (outside of the Free the Hops movement) and ended up getting a heavy dose of the race while going to a graduation two weeks ago. Hearing some of the ads accusing one candidate of not believing the Bible to be 100% factual and another guy wanting to teach evolution in the schools...are topics like that stuff people really care about? You obviously can't gauge the entire race based on a couple of commercials, and I was driving when the "Does the Governor want to cut Saban's salary-gate" was going on but honestly, I was a bit taken back at hearing/seeing those commericals while there.

Welcome to the Great State of Alabama, where an entire candidacy can be founded on a simple premise: I have a bible, I love to hunt, I'm a "real" conservative.

I was in Montgomery for one night and Fairhope for another and didn't see much of the local news but I did get a kick out of some guy running for state senate or something getting interviewed on the 5pm news, live, and he came out wearing jeans, a t-shirt and tennis shoes like he just got done mowing the yard or something. That and the commercial that would flash images of Obama, Pelosi, random "terrorist" looking people and the candidate the ad was against.

Not much substance from what I saw in the race from an outsider's perspective.

Or conversely, your supporters can circulate emails and flyers saying the other guy isn't electable because, well, he's black and this is Alabama. You connect the dots.

Key word being "supporters" - a big difference than the actual candidates themselves showing up in commercials with a cowboy hat and a shotgun. And FTR, Sparks denounced the incident you've referenced.

Race has no place in any campaign. We had nothing to do with the letter...

I'm just saying. It's not like various campaigns the last several years aren't above allowing "supporters" to do the dirty work while publicly condemning it themselves. The damage gets done regardless.

And a cowboy hat and a shotgun in a largely rural state is not anywhere near the same level as the racial comments.

I hear you. But... that's also a pretty strong assumption (allegation)...

Well, I've heard similar assumptions made about Republican campaigns in general elections, so it's not exactly that far of a leap.
