Here’s another fun stat that backs up what me and you’ve been saying. Scroll down to 67 and you’ll see Thorne. Then look at all the QBs considered worst worse teams have winning records 🫠

https://www.espn.com/college-football/qbr

Texas A&M is 6-1 with a brand new HC and a million transfers that have come in and out the last two seasons, and I dare anyone to try to explain to me what Conner Weigman does well. He is the definition of mid. They do NOT have a "star QB". That kid was the QB when we beat them two seasons ago with Robby Ashford. He went 14 for 36 for 121 yards in one of the worst offensive performances you will ever see.

They are winning games because Elko is a hard-nosed HC, and his team understands situational football well. When their defense is in a position to get off the field, they get off the field. They close games out, whereas we do the complete opposite (literally fumbling away games that are essentially won). You saw it yesterday: Thorne throws a perfect ball for a TD which should have put us up 24-6 (game over), but the receiver drops it. What, we need a better QB to throw a better pass in that scenario before someone makes a damn play to win us the game? The pass was perfect.

We are a capable team that has no idea how to execute at any level. Worse yet, even when they execute for 3 full quarters, they somehow find a way to go haywire and lose. This is all entirely coaching related. You need a star QB to contend for a national championship. You do NOT need Peyton Manning in order to win 7-8 games with this roster.

I’m so tired of the no players excuse. We are vastly more talented than at least 1/3 of the SEC and probably 70% of the country. Yet here we are. This losing streak isn’t a player thing. It isn’t even a Payton Thorne thing. It’s a culture problem. A team takes the personality of its coach, and our coach is too soft, and takes himself too seriously. And thinks he’s better than he is.

We had better talent than Cal, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Missouri and lost all 4 games.

Right now it’s square pegs in round holes. It’s crazy the sample sized results we see in very limited sample sizes of non spread formations

it's not so much that we have to have a STAR qb to win but we do need one that is capable of providing a legit dual threat scenario. Thorne can run but for whatever reason has chosen to do so much less this season. There's also been glaringly obvious disconnects with receivers where a back shoulder will be thrown but they aren't looking for it.. I suspect that is on the wr's & ultimately on the coaching. Nonetheless Freeze will be back so it's all cathartic sowing at the wind until we see how next season unfolds.

And for the love of god it would be wonderful if we'd target Cam Coleman A LOT more and Lambert Smith a lot less.

Or stop forcing the RPOs . When HB has played he’s proved the line gives enough time to make progressive reads. Problem is Thorne can’t do it or picks the wrong one

This is simply not true at this point.

Teams all across the country find ways to win games with average or worse QB play every single week. Missouri just did it to us yesterday. Brady Cook was 11 for 22 (50%) for 194 yards and 0 TD's. That is NOT good in 2024. On the last drive he missed MULTIPLE throws no different than Thorne does, but what happened? We bailed him out, just like we do every single week regardless of who the opposing QB is. The difference is that when its 3rd and 18, 4th and 5, or 3rd and 10 our defense collapses and concedes plays that never should be conceded. When Peyton Thorne is in 3rd and 18, you will notice that the opposing team doesn't magically blow a coverage or blow containment to let him run for an uncontested 1st down. When we have 3rd and 18, the OL tends to all of a sudden decide to block no one, and the play is over within 2 seconds. It doesn't matter who the QB is in that scenario. When plays need to be made, nobody on this team wants to do it. Whether its Thorne, the OL, the receivers, the defense, or the damn kicker.

I'm getting tired of AU fans hyping up average or worse QB's from opposing teams and pretending like we are losing because we don't have these supposed mythical beasts behind center. The kid from Arkansas who beat us looked no better than Robby Ashford. Completely subpar QB play, but we bailed him out continuously. Arky's QB has 6 TD passes and 6 INT's on the season, yet they are still sitting at 4-3. No, he isn't good. We have lost 3 games this season in which the opposing team's QB was subpar or worse.

Oklahoma beat us with a crap true freshman QB and 2nd and 3rd string WR's. He made two plays the entire game - and one of them was a blown coverage. That kid got benched in their blowout loss yesterday after he threw 2 INT's on 5 attempts. Again, we didn't lose because he was better than our QB, we lost because we are a loser team and we invent new ways to lose regardless of the opponent. Thorne had 3 TD passes in that game. Similar to Arkansas, Oklahoma is sitting at 4-3. They are a bad team with a bad QB, yet they have twice as many wins as us.

We lose games because the entire team top to bottom cant win. Thorne is a part of that, but open your eyes people. This is not a QB problem at this point, it is a foundational problem which starts with the HC.

This isn't a post to defend Thorne. He clearly isn't the guy. But this team CLEARLY has much bigger problems than who the QB is at this point. It is very silly to be pretending like this is a healthy team, but we are just losing because poopy Thorne can't win.

A competent QB that can make plays and win a game is partly what we are missing. But yes, we have other issues. But, What game has Thorne won for us? Cook put Mizzou on his back and drove 90 yds to win the game. Pavia at Vandy has 5 wins. Yes, our defense gave up some plays. I imagine they are tired of bailing the offense out time and time again.  Its called complimentary football. No, Thorne didn't lose the game yesterday.  But , he did nothing to win it. Which is my point. No one is asking for Cam Newton. But a 5th year senior that folds up like a tin can at the 1st sign of pressure doesn't inspire confidence thru out the rest of the squad. Young players have to be lead. Fair or not alot of that falls on the QB.

I disagree slightly... We have the talent to have 5 or 6 wins at this point IF, we had a competent QB. But not with the cat we got now

Slightly disagree, I believe we could better utilize our most talented position (RB), and not have to rely on a below average QB to be perfect. Run opens the pass, our oline while not the most talented, is far more talented than any we’ve had in a long time.

RPO run was took away mostly yesterday.  When the D stacks the box a QB has to make plays

He still throws terrible passes every game!!! Got our best TE knocked out possibly next week. Constantly over and under throws wide open receivers as well

But our QB after two seasons can’t make A play. Time to adjust that scheme a little and rely less on that QB.

Hugh won't do that. That's not his system.

And that’s why he’s not a good HC! Good coaches adjust to what they have while recruiting what they want. Slowing down the snaps is the only adjustment he’s made and that’s solely bc the ONLY reason we stay in games is the defense

Playing Thorne has no upside at this point. The season is unsalvageable. A &M and AU are going in opposite directions. Kentucky nearly beat UGA, Vanderbilt beat Bama and Pavia is the kind of crafty seasoned qb that looks like Tom Brady against AU (and already proved it last year.) Bama is down, it's THE rivalry game but they have more to play for than we do and it's in T-town. ULM catches Auburn with their heads down and Freeze's "we're making progress" is 2-10 and not hemorrhaging skill players and recruits will be a Herculean task. Play one of the kids and at least have an interesting end to the season. Sort out the keepers and the mistakes at the end of the year. The current state is unwatchable.

A bit unrelated to the spirit of the post you quoted, but I understand where you’re coming from.

Hank’s only played against the worst teams we’ve played this season to be fair. I don’t think the OL in pass blocking has been a problem and I agree with the thought that Hank is more decisive than PT. Only problem is he doesn’t read the field very well

Too small a sample size imo to tell how well he really reads the field. Yes he had 3 ints however 2 of the 3 was timing and you’re talking less than a second and both are big plays. The 3rd was just a great play by the defender.

Danger in posting a rant like this is if HE takes these incredible athletes HE is recruiting to anywhere near where their stars usually go, the post looks clownish at best. Red & others in the know have repeatedly said Freeze aint goin anywhere anytime soon so you're hedging your bets against the players Hugh's bringing in sucking when even a high school caliber coach could win big with them. It's COLLEGE football, very avg gameday coaches like Bobby Bowden, Lou Holz and Urban Meyer have done great things with ONLY their recruiting ability.

Are u putting CHF in the  same breathe as Bobby Bowden, Holtz and Meyer who have won championships. So are u insinuating they can’t coach. 🤦🏿

Lambert Smith is the best WR we've had in years. He has a shot at a 1,000 yards in this train wreck of an offense. He had 156 yards on 5 catches against Arkansas. He might be the best player on the entire team.

Cam will be great and can make big plays right now, but he's had his share of freshman mistakes.

As far as Thorne not running enough. He has 65 carries this season (minus however many sacks). That is plenty. He loves to keep the ball on the RPO.

For comparison, Hunter has 97 carries, Alston 31, and Cobb 15.
