While at the start of last season Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze warned that much shouldn’t be made of depth charts, the Tigers still participated in “depth chart Monday” on the Monday leading up to their season-opener against Alabama A&M.

In the game notes distributed to media members on Monday, the depth chart was as follows:

Offense

QB: Payton Thorne, Hank Brown, Holden Geriner, Walker White

RB: Jarquez Hunter, Damari Alston, Jeremiah Cobb, Justin Jones, Sean Jackson

TE: Rivaldo Fairweather, Brandon Frazier OR Luke Deal, Miah Riley, Rico Walker

WR: Cam Coleman, Camden Brown OR Caleb Burton III

Defense

According to the depth chart provided on Monday, just about anyone could, theoretically, start on defense.

Again, Freeze has made it clear not to take much stock into the depth charts released, which is perfectly illustrated by the defense’s depth chart below:

DT: Philip Blidi OR Malik Blocton OR Gage Keys OR TJ Lindsey

NT: Isaiah Raikes OR Jayson Jones OR Trill Carter OR Quientrail Jamison-Travis

DE: Keldric Faulk OR Zykeivous Walker OR Amaris Williams

Auburn football to host North Alabama for first meeting in history in 2028

Published: Aug. 26, 2024, 11:46 a.m.

2–3 minutes

For the first time ever, the Auburn Tigers and the North Alabama Lions are scheduled to meet on the football field.

The two programs have agreed to meet at Auburn’s Jordan-Hare Stadium on Sept. 9, 2028, according to a North Alabama press release that was distributed on Monday.

“Aligning a future matchup with an in-state SEC opponent has been a scheduling priority for our football program,” North Alabama director of athletics Dr. Josh Looney said in the release. “This will be an incredible experience for our university, fans and alumni. Our coaching staff is closely connected to the Auburn program. We appreciate athletic director John Cohen and head coach Hugh Freeze for the invitation to visit Jordan-Hare Stadium.”

According to the release, Auburn’s Jordan-Hare Stadium will make for the largest venue UNA’s football program has visited.

The 2028 matchup is set to be a homecoming for UNA head coach Brent Dearmon, who served as an analyst at Auburn in 2013 and 2014.

“This is an enormous deal for UNA football,” Dearmon said in a release. “We’ll take the visitor spot, not only for an SEC game, but for an in-state SEC power. This will fire up our fans and our players. Most of them grew up Auburn fans or dreamed of playing on such a stage.”

Meanwhile, two other former Auburn players have places on the UNA football staff as former Auburn linebacker DeShaun Davis serves as the Lions linebackers coach and former Auburn running back Kerryon Johsnon serves as UNA’s Director of Player Development.

Hugh Freeze says it’s ‘high time’ for Auburn’s young WRs. Are the freshmen ready?

Updated: Aug. 26, 2024, 3:27 p.m.|Published: Aug. 26, 2024, 3:21 p.m.

Hugh Freeze addresses the media head of Auburn's season opener vs Alabama A&M

Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze has tried his best to temper the expectations of the freshmen wide receivers on his roster.

Yes, the likes of Bryce Cain, Cam Coleman, Malcolm Simmons and Perry Thompson are wildly talented and have looked the part of an SEC wide receiver since arriving to Auburn’s campus.

But at the end of the day, the quartet is still made up of freshmen.

"I’m careful not to put too much expectations on them in year one, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they contributed in a big way,” Freeze said on the opening day of fall camp.

Now that it’s finally game week and the Tigers are just six days from kicking off their 2024 season against Alabama A&M, it’s time for Freeze and Auburn’s offensive staff to figure out just how big of a role those freshmen receivers will have this season.

“It’s a pretty free rotation at that spot,” Freeze said of the wide receiver positions. “I want them fresh.”

However, that said, Freeze admits that he does need to see a bit more out of Auburn’s rookie receivers should they want to keep being a part of the consistent rotation.

“I do think we’re at a spot right now where, again, they’re gonna have to go out there and do it,” Freeze said, referring to the freshmen receivers. “In the mock game Saturday, it was freely rotating among those top six guys. Still a few too many (missed assignments) by the younger guys. We’re gonna talk straight about that today when I give them the truth.”

While Cain and Coleman enrolled early and went through both spring and fall camp, Simmons and Thompson didn’t arrive to Auburn until this summer, meaning they’re a bit behind their earlier-arriving counterparts.

Yet regardless of if they’ve gone through two camps or just one, Freeze says he doesn’t expect perfection from the freshmen receivers.

“Some of those younger guys, you expect them to make some mistakes, you do,” Freeze said.

However, considering the Tigers are at the doorstep of their 2024 season, the pressure is on for those freshmen to make fewer mistakes.

“We’re at a point in our journey here where we’re dependent upon them. It’s high time,” Freeze said. “I get you may have a drop or mess up the top end of a route. But when all other 10 get the signal exactly right, and you’re asleep at the wheel and it destroys the play, that stings. That hurts.”

Freeze added that the Auburn offense had “about six of those” during Saturday’s mock game, referring to missed assignments from a young receiver.

“If we’re going to have this free-rotation mindset, that’s got to change,” Freeze said.

“They’re going to be challenged today with that. I expect you to see a good rotation there, early in games especially. If you get down to it, you’ve got to have who you think gives you the best opportunity to win the football game out there. I’m anxious to see all of those guys jump in there, and how they perform when it’s real.”

It becomes real for Auburn and its freshmen receivers on Saturday evening as the Tigers kick off their season against Alabama A&M from Jordan-Hare Stadium at 6:30 p.m.

Auburn football injury update: The latest from Hugh Freeze before Alabama A&M

Updated: Aug. 26, 2024, 2:16 p.m.|Published: Aug. 26, 2024, 2:15 p.m.

2–3 minutes

When Auburn opens its season against Alabama A&M on Saturday evening from Jordan-Hare Stadium, the Tigers will do so relatively healthy after Hugh Freeze and the Auburn coaching staff really emphasized having a safe and injury-free fall camp.

However, there are still a few question marks on the injury front.

Freeze said on Monday that linebacker Austin Keys and defensive back Keionte Scott are both “probable” for Saturday’s game against Alabama A&M after both dealing with minor injuries during fall camp.

Keys is coming off of an MCL sprain he suffered midway through camp.

“Our medical team felt like he was a probable,” Freeze said of Keys. “He has another day to day, which is just walk through today. But I need to see something from the guy on Tuesday and Wednesday for me to feel that way.”

Meanwhile, Scott has been nursing a minor hamstring issue for much of camp and got the same “probable” distinction from Auburn’s medical team on Monday morning.

The good news is Freeze said Penn State transfer wide receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith “bounced back” during practice last week after previously suffering a minor ankle injury.

“He looked ready to play,” Freeze said of Lambert-Smith.

Freeze also took a second to update Auburn’s kicker situation as Alex McPherson continues to recover from a gastrointestinal illness.

“Alex is much better. He’s much better and he’s getting better,” Freeze said of McPherson, adding that he started kicking some in practice last week.

However, Freeze isn’t expecting McPherson to be available for Saturday’s opener.

“I don’t think he will be ready to go, but don’t hold me to that,” Freeze said. “So Towns (McGough) is preparing to go.”

Where Auburn's offensive line stands going into Saturday's season opener

With Auburn now in its first game week of the 2024 season, it’s still looking for definitive answers along one of the most important position groups on the field.

Head coach Hugh Freeze revealed late in fall camp that there was somewhat of an experiment going on along the offensive line, more specifically on the left side with Percy Lewis and Dillon Wade swapping positions.

Lewis, a Mississippi State transfer, started fall camp as the primary first-team left tackle. Recently, Freeze and the offensive staff experimented with moving him to guard and pushing Wade outside to tackle.

On Monday, Freeze said they’ve rotated Lewis, Wade and Tyler Johnson along the left side of the offensive line, but doesn’t have a grouping set in stone yet.

Bradyn Joiner has also seen first-team action at left guard in the midst of the shuffle.

“I think it’ll be a few games in before we kind of settle into exactly what it looks like,” Freeze said. “The most likelihood is you’re going to see D Wade play a little of both and rotate around him at that tackle position and kind of see who plays the best.”

Wade started for Auburn at left tackle last season, but with the addition of Lewis, the idea was to move Wade to guard, a position offensive line coach Jake Thornton said he is “more fit” to play.

Johnson, a redshirt freshman, is the newest name in the mix and is another strong competitor for the starting left tackle job.

"Tyler Johnson is now healthy, and he’s got a chance to be really, really talented,” Freeze said during an Aug. 16 press conference.

Lewis and Johnson are both listed as starters at left tackle with Wade starting at left guard, according to the depth chart Auburn released Monday. However, not much should be taken from the released depth chart, given 37 players on Auburn’s defense are listed as starters.

The right side of the offensive line remains pretty set, with Jeremiah Wright listed as a starter at right guard and Izavion Miller listed at right tackle. However, Ronan Chambers could see some playing time, with Freeze calling the Akron transfer a “very good late pickup.”

During that Aug. 16 press conference, Freeze called the offensive line his “biggest worry about the offense right now.”

It’s a contrast from SEC Media Days, where Freeze said, “we should be good there,” when asked about the offensive line.

He didn’t say any more about his overall feelings on the group during Monday’s press conference, but mentioned that competition for those spots on the offensive line is ongoing.

"Ultimately, like I will tell our players today, at some point the film has to be the resume that is the ultimate decider,” Freeze said. “We will end up needing every one of them before the year’s over. And, hopefully, we create great competitive depth there by rotating some around and keeping them fresher.”
