On The Plains with Izavion Miller: 'Grateful for football'

by Shelly PoeShare

FacebookEmail

AUBURN, Ala. – A love affair with football began for a very tall man at a very small age.

Auburn senior offensive lineman Izavion “Too Tall” Miller has found his heart in the gridiron game, and he is grateful for its impact on his life on and off the field.

“I’ve been playing football since I was 6,” the Memphis native recalled of his introduction to the game. “Some random guy with the Memphis Broncos came up one day to our door and asked if I wanted to play pee-wee football. And I’ve been at it ever since.

“I also played baseball growing up – third base – but football is my game. In high school is where I got my nickname ‘Too Tall.’ My high school coach, Jerome Griffin, gives everybody a nickname and mine was ‘Too Tall.’ I guess because I am tall, but that was a great player, too,” Miller said, referring to NFL legend Ed “Too Tall” Jones of the Dallas Cowboys.

Miller’s progression in football from Wooddale High in Memphis to Southwest Mississippi Community College to Auburn has been slow and steady, as the results show.

“Going into juco, I wasn’t even expecting to start when I got there,” Miller recalled of his first season at Southwest Mississippi. “But then the game got real easy and my second year of juco, I started recognizing all the offense. That’s when I thought maybe I could do this full-time at a higher level.”

After earning NJCAA all-region and all-Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference (MACCC) honors, along with preseason All-America recognition, Miller arrived at Auburn before the 2023 season, and earned the starting nod at right tackle for every game last year.

“I love the game of football,” Miller said. “I love it. I love the physicality – being physical and being free out there on the field. The game is deep in my heart.”

For Miller, a growing love for Auburn and the community that has embraced him on the Plains is also in his heart.

“Ultimately, my decision to come to Auburn came down to my relationship with my coaches,” he said. “During my recruiting process out of juco, I was originally going to go to Ole Miss with Coach (Jake) Thornton and then he ended up coming here (as Auburn’s offensive line coach).

“It’s been a good fit with Coach Thornton. He’s a great man, he and Coach (Hugh) Freeze. I liked everything about Auburn and decided to come here.

“Coming in, I was just expecting football, but with Coach Freeze, I feel like I’ve gotten a lot more than that. He’s teaching us how to appreciate football and to live without football, to be grateful for it – just be grateful for life.

I love the game of football. I love it. I love the physicality – being physical and being free out there on the field. The game is deep in my heart.

“I love the atmosphere at our games,” Miller added. “It gets me hyped. I can’t explain it, but it just feels different, and I’ve played in a lot of stadiums.

“I love being part of what we call the Auburn Family. People stop me all the time to talk to me if I’m wearing something Auburn. The community’s nice, people are so nice here. It’s a cool place to be.

“I do love Auburn – way more than I would have expected.”

Miller comes from a close family, and they enjoy Auburn, too.

“I have a pretty big family. They’re very sports minded,” he said. “My grandparents, my mom and my siblings all come to games here.

“I just love this community. To be here, with great people, in a great community, I love it.”

Auburn will begin its second season under Hugh Freeze with a bit of a tune-up out of the gates, taking on Alabama A&M in a game with a lopsided early point spread.

According to lines listed by FanDuel, the Tigers open up as 46.5-point favorites over the Bulldogs. The over/under point total is set at 56.5 points.

Location: Auburn, AL – Jordan-Hare Stadium

The Tigers head into their second season under Freeze hoping added familiarity means a lot. Quarterback Payton Thorne was just so-so a year ago, but Freeze has noted there will be much more of the playbook available this year now that he has a better understanding of the system.

Thorne should at least have some better options to work with this year than he has had in the past at Auburn. That starts with former five-star-plus freshman Cam Coleman, who might make a huge difference in eating away at that huge early point spread.

Coleman has been a standout since the moment he arrived on campus, and he said he’s developing a nice rapport with Thorne at this point.

“My connection with Payton Thorne has definitely grown a lot,” Coleman said. “Our chemistry on and off the field, just getting to know him as a person. Getting to know him as a person, he’ll just learn me more, I learn him more.

“I told him how I like the ball being thrown and he told me where he wants to be on certain routes. So just really building that chemistry.”

That chemistry will be important. So too will be retooling the defense. Auburn finished 2023 a fairly pedestrian 43rd nationally in scoring defense and 47th nationally in total defense.

Veteran linebacker Eugene Asante should help lead a unit that is looking for improvement at every level. There’s plenty of experience across the board, with up to seven seniors potentially starting on defense.

Auburn will look to take on the big early point spread against Alabama A&M on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET in Jordan-Hare Stadium. The game will be carried on ESPN+ and SECN+.

Downloadable 2024 Auburn Tigers football schedule

Auburn Wire
~2 minutes

The 2024 college football season is almost here, which means it is time to get ready to root for your TEAM as they enter year 2 of the Hugh Freeze era on the Plains.

The Auburn Tigers open the 2024 campaign against in-state foe, Alabama A&M on Aug. 31 before their lone Power Four nonconference matchup against the California Golden Bears. They will have their last tune-up game before SEC play begins when the New Mexico Lobos come to Jordan-Hare. The Tigers will then host the Arkansas Razorbacks on Sept. 21 and the Oklahoma Sooners on Sept. 28.

The first road trip of the season kicks off in October against the Georgia Bulldogs in the “Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry.” You won’t hear a single “War Eagle” chant from the home crowd with nothing but road tests in the month. Auburn has trips to Missouri and Kentucky after the open week following the UGA game.

In November it will be back to Jordan-Hare for three of four games to close out the season. Vanderbilt, Louisiana-Monroe, and Texas A&M will come to the Plains before Auburn closes out the season in the greatest rivalry game in sports, the Iron Bowl in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, when they face the hated Crimson Tide.

Hunter, McPherson earn first team All-SEC preseason honors

Taylor Jones

~2 minutes

The preseason All-SEC team has been released, and Auburn has two representatives on the first team.

Running back Jarquez Hunter and kicker Alex McPherson are among 29 players from across the SEC to earn a place within the preseason All-SEC team. Hunter joins Georgia‘s Trevor Etienne as a first-team running back while McPherson is tabbed as a first-team kickoff specialist alongside kicker Bert Auburn of Texas and punter James Burnip of Alabama. McPherson also grabbed third-team kicker honors.

Hunter’s first season as the premier back in Auburn’s offense saw him rush for 909 yards on 159 attempts with seven touchdowns. He looks to take his game a step further this season by becoming the first back to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark since Tank Bigsby rushed for 1,102 yards in 2022.

McPherson earns a first-team nod after connecting on all 40 of his extra point attempts and carving up a 13-for-13 mark in field goals with a long of 53. McPherson battled a gastrointestinal ailment during the offseason and is slowly working his way back to 100%.

In all, Auburn has four representatives on the preseason All-SEC team. Keionte Scott is a second-team punt returner while Eugene Asante is a third-team linebacker.

Where does Auburn land in Dan Mullen's SEC predictions?

Taylor Jones
~2 minutes

Over the last month, analysts have dropped their SEC predictions in hopes of filling the void until the games kick off this weekend. Former SEC head coach turned ESPN analyst Dan Mullen is the latest to do so.

Mullen revealed his projected order of finish for the SEC this season and has placed Auburn at No. 11. Mullen expects the Tigers to finish higher than Florida, Arkansas, South Carolina, Mississippi State, and Vanderbilt.

Ahead of Auburn, Mullen predicts that LSU, Alabama, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, and Kentucky will finish 5-10 while Ole Miss, Missouri, Georgia, and Texas are the four teams that have the best chance to earn a trip to the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta.

Mullen predicts the race to Mercedez-Benz Stadium will come with controversy.

“Getting in the title game could come down to the tiebreaker. There are 6 teams that have a chance,” Mullen said on X (formerly Twitter).

Mullen’s predictions are similar to those made by other outlets and experts. USA TODAY Sports agrees with Mullen that the Tigers will finish No. 11 in the SEC while the SEC preseason media poll puts Auburn in the No. 10 slot.

Rewinding everything Auburn's Hugh Freeze said about the first game week of 2024

Updated: Aug. 26, 2024, 1:35 p.m.|Published: Aug. 26, 2024, 12:48 p.m.

Auburn football is less than a week away from returning to the field, beginning Year 2 of the Hugh Freeze era.

The Tigers open the 2024 season Saturday against Alabama A&M, starting at 6:30 p.m. in Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Freeze is set to meet with media at 1 p.m., follow along here to stay updated:

Freeze starts by congratulating Auburn soccer on starting 3-0

Freeze also sends his thoughts and prayers to Caden Tellier, the high school quarterback from Morgan Academy who died over the weekend following a traumatic brain injury he sustained in his first game of the season

Freeze says there’s “several unknowns” about Alabama A&M, says they haven’t been able to find out who will play quarterback for A&M amidst its quarterback battle

Freeze says Alabama A&M will want to run the football and says they’ll need to make them one-dimensional

Freeze says the offensive gameplanning takes “a little guesswork” given how new Alabama A&M’s defensive staff is

Freeze says Percy Lewis, Dillon Wade and Tyler Johnson have all rotated along the left side of the offensive line. Adds that Wade will likely play left tackle and left guard

Freeze said KeAndre Lambert-Smith “bounced back” and “looked ready to play” last week after dealing with an ankle injury during fall camp.

Freeze said there were still “a few too many” missed assignments from the young wide receivers during the team’s mock game on Saturday.

Freeze says the medical team felt like Austin Keys and Keionte Scott are “probable” for this week

Freeze says he hasn’t looked at the depth chart that was released today. Says that Day 1 depth charts are “ridiculous” and “not accurate.” Mentions multiple positions such as offensive line, defensive line and safety where multiple players could start.

Freeze says Keionte Scott will be the primary punt returner if healthy, if not KeAndre Lambert-Smith is next up

Freeze says Alex McPherson kicked a little bit last Thursday, but he doesn’t think he will be ready to play on Saturday

Freeze said they’re “blessed” to have Sam Jackson V, Robert Lewis, Malcolm Simmons and Bryce Cain at slot receiver, complimenting their speed and versatility.

Freeze says the players are handling the helmet communication pretty easily, but it has taken some adjusting for him. Mentions they had some issues with the helmet communication in the stadium on Saturday.
