NCAA to allow on-field commercial sponsor advertisements for regular season football games beginning in...

Brett Batchelor

1–2 minutes

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - The NCAA announced Thursday that they are now allowing commercial sponsor advertisements to be placed on college football fields across all levels (DI, DII, and DIII) beginning this season.

“This change allows schools to generate additional income to support student-athletes. I’m pleased that we could find flexibility within our rules to make this happen for member schools,” said NCAA President Charlie Baker.

Under the new rule, corporate advertisements can be placed in three spots on the field:

A single advertisement centered on the 50-yard-line in addition to no more than two smaller flanking advertisements else where on the field

The NCAA says that these advertisements can be done on a game-by-game basis or for the entire season.

The rule change is supported by the Football Bowl Subdivision and Football Championship Subdivision, as well as the Division I FBS Oversight and FCS Oversight Committees.

Payton Thorne among college football’s active passing leaders

Taylor Jones

Sat, June 8, 2024 at 11:00 AM CDT·1 min read

Auburn football’s offense will improve this season thanks to a historic wide receiver class from high school recruiting and several transfer portal additions. The biggest question surrounding Auburn’s wide receivers is “Will Payton Thorne get them to their full potential?”

While it is still early to tell, Thorne has a factor about him that should work out in his favor. According to a list compiled by Patrick Conn of College Sports Wire, Thorne is among college football’s active leading passers. Thorne checks in at No. 10 ahead of the 2024 season with 8,256 yards in four seasons.

Thorne has the chance to reach the 10,000-yard mark this season, but he will need to have a stronger showing says Conn.

The former Michigan State Spartan and current Auburn Tigers quarterback Payton Thorne checks in at No. 10 on the list. His 2023 campaign with Auburn left a lot to be desired from what we expect with a Hugh Freeze quarterback. Most of his success came at Michigan State. Thorne has plenty of competition behind him but this will be his last chance to build an NFL-caliber resume.

As a full-time starter, Thorne experienced a career-low in yards and touchdown passes in 2023. He passed for just 1,755 yards and 16 touchdowns last season. He failed to reach 100 yards in passing five times last season, and went through a three-game stretch without throwing a touchdown pass.

With Auburn’s revamped wide receiver room, expect Thorne to find more success in 2024.

How often could Walker White see the field in 2024?

Taylor Jones

Sat, June 8, 2024 at 2:00 PM CDT·2 min read

Hugh Freeze has given his full confidence to Payton Thorne to lead the Auburn offense in 2024.

However, if matters appear to go south in a game quickly, or if he consistently shows signs of 2023’s struggles, Freeze will need to have an emergency backup plan in place. That plan could involve true freshman Walker White.

White signed with Auburn as the nation’s No. 5 quarterback from the 2024 recruiting cycle and the No. 1 player from Arkansas. He threw for over 2,000 yards in each of his final three seasons at Little Rock Christian and will mesh well with Auburn’s new passing strategy.

247Sports’ Cooper Petagna recently revealed his top five freshmen quarterbacks most likely to play in 2024 list, and placed White as the No. 2 option behind Washington‘s Demond Williams Jr. If White were to not earn a starting bid during the 2024 season, Petagna sees plenty of ways that Auburn could use him on the field.

“He’s a wild card. Auburn is in a pretty comfortable position with Payton Thorne. They have three guys that they like. Walker White is a guy who is just oozing with physical traits and upside. He’s a guy that we saw as a raw, developmental prospect. He’s got a pro comp to Will Levis. If Auburn is in a situation to get Walker White on the field, that’s going to be really tempting for Hugh Freeze. There are some expectations for Auburn under Hugh Freeze in year two, but big picture-wise, White is a guy that you want to get as much experience as possible. Freeze will find a way to get him in. He’s got a big frame at 230 pounds. They can use them around the goal line, too.”

White will have two competitors to fight off for playing time this season. Holden Geriner returns to the team as a Sophomore, and Hank Brown will look to build off his Music City Bowl performance in 2024.
