What SEC teams have the strongest rosters

As Auburn basketball has reloaded what SEC teams have the strongest rosters

Nathan King

11–14 minutes

The SEC looks to be an absolute juggernaut in its first season as a 16-team league, as several other programs besides Auburn have also enjoyed strong offseasons of roster moves

Auburn isn't the only team in the new-look SEC feeling good about its roster this offseason.

The Tigers' work in the transfer portal is complete, and many other programs have put the finishing touches on their teams, too. And Wednesday's NBA draft deadline provided some further answers for the SEC's outlook next season, including the news that Alabama point guard Mark Sears will return to school, giving Auburn's Johni Broome some competition for preseason player of the year in the conference. With the rosters mostly set across the league, let's take a look at how the transfer portal and other offseason movement has treated Auburn's SEC cohorts, and how things compare to the Tigers' healthy roster.

We'll go in order of 247Sports' SEC power rankings, published last week. The obvious caveat here is that teams aren't necessarily finished adding through the portal — especially those that had massive roster rebuilds on their hands, like Arkansas and Kentucky. But at this point in the offseason, most scholarship spots have been accounted for, so there's a good idea of what all 16 teams will look like — especially after the added clarity from some NBA draft decisions Wednesday.

Pretty shocked to see Auburn as number 1. But I really believe Auburn and UAT are interchangeable. Only real difference is that they have a 3 year start returning at PG and we have a veteran guard coming in to play at this level the first time.

There's no one on bama's roster that compares with Broome.

Yep! Honestly, where do they have such a HUGE advantage over us in the starting 5? Sears over Pegues? Ok, but I don’t see that as a HUGE advantage. I think people are really underestimating Pegues’ potential. I would take Denver and Kelly over Wrightsell. CBM over Stephenson. Broome over Nelson and their center. Our real wild card is Chaney and how much he develops. If he even just averages about 10-11 ppg, we will be a juggernaut. But yea, again, when you really start dissecting the rosters, you’ll see that UAT is not some unbeatable team. Outside of Sears, they didn’t upgrade at all in their backcourt compared to what they had last year. The only thing they did improve in their front court was sacrifice their offense with defense with the Rutgers player. Again, no huge upgrades they have made. And again, their roster makes no sense when you look at it at a basketball standpoint.

Well to be fair they were playing absolutely no defense 🤣. However, I do agree and I’ve been posting this constantly that if Tahaad was 3-4 inches taller he would be a lottery pick for next year’s draft. He is a gifted athlete, he will be playing ALOT this year. I say we better enjoy him while we can because I still think he’s going to be drafted next year.

Oh no doubt he is a prolific scorer. Just look at his games and highlights, he has that scorer’s mentality.

Alabama has the best roster 1-13. It’s truly unbelievable how loaded that roster is. But, our starting 5 is better with the exception of the 4 (very disappointed in how the 4 turned out) and the 1. Our guards give us so much versatility that we can really spread the floor and open up the offense this year. I hope we full court pressure most teams.

See again, I think we are forgetting to ask yourself did they upgrade anywhere from last besides center? Their guards from the portal were all ranked below Pegues. The players coming back from the Final four team are average defenders at best. If you know basketball, you either can play defense or not. Also, their style of play doesn’t allow them to play the type of defense Auburn plays. I really believe people are overvaluing their team. This is pretty much the same team that got trampled by Auburn last year and are actually losing some of their fire power on offense.

I really want to believe my Tigers are going to have a great season, and I really want to believe that our Tigers have a very good team. But best in the league? hmmmmmmm .... I dunno about that.

Idk where that pessimism is based on. They’ve been the best program in conference over whatever arbitrary time limit ESPN referenced after we won the SEC CG (I think it was 7 years). Even if you shrunk it to where Alabama started winning a few, I still think we’re about the same in wins and trophies.

It would be more surprising if Auburn wasn’t one of the best in the league with this roster. Statistics, accolades, metrics, pedigree, anything would tell you to believe they’ll be elite in conference

unless it’s the pre-late 2010s SEC and you’re a prime Kentucky fan, it’s wasted effort to hope to be the absolute best. The talent and coaching is too widespread now - you’re going to drop a surprise game or two. What you realistically should hope to be is amongst the tier 1 of contenders and hope that a few games break your way. That’s effectively where Auburn was last year - that team wasn’t supposed to be a game from winning the regular season title or win the SECT, but they got a few good breaks with the bracket for the latter and gave themselves a competitive enough roster to compete with all the big boys

You could make arguments for us or bama being the favorite. And teams like Texas A & M and Tennessee are right there too. But this much I do know. We have the ability to win it if we play like we should. It's just going to come down to which team or teams can put things together the best.

And at the proper time. It's fun to watch when your  team peaks at the right time.

I think the addition of Omoruyi was a good move by otz.  He's going to be a rim protector on defense and they are going to shoot threes.  As Sears goes, so goes uat.  I was torn about Sears going pro.  On the one hand, I wanted him out of the SEC.  On the other hand, it's freaking hilarious to me that Holloway is going to be sitting down at tipoff.

I don't know what AU is going to look like. To me it all depends on how the personalities on the team mesh together.  On paper it is the strongest group of guards that I've ever seen at AU.  If they can feed the beast down low and punish the defense from the perimeter when it collapses on Broome then I like AU's chances next year.  I'm intrigued by Pegues/Pettiford/Kelly on the floor at the same time.  I'm not discounting Denver, I'm just excited to see what that lineup can do.

I think Aden made a very poor choice choosing UAT when there was a good chance all along that Sears would be back. He should have chosen another program. It just goes to show that making a decision purely out of petty and spite usually backfires.

Where did I say or imply anything that could be interpreted as pessimism. I simply questioned how convinced we should be about Auburn being the best in the SEC. FACT IS - right now, it is all just fabulism. We don't know how any team in the league will gel, what teams might experience injuries, who might pop up as an unexpectedly awesome player (like Knect at TN).

I did not say that I thought Auburn was NOT the best in the SEC. I said I just don't KNOW if Auburn is the strongest roster in the SEC.

If you've got a problem with the notion of uncertainty in regards to predicting sports, welp, you've got a problem. 🙂

I’m guessing you actually only read that first sentence of that post and skimmed past the rest?
It’s a projection about where their roster ranks right now based on recent past and present factors. It’s not a “I know Auburn will have the best SEC roster in March”

Yeah, after the Baylor game last year I mistakenly made the prediction that we would only have Holloway for 1-2 years, but bc he would turn pro, not leave for Bama.

Any way, I hope you are right, where I was wrong.
