Auburn mens golf advances to face Ohio State in NCAA semis

Auburn beat Virginia in the first round of match play.

With the match on the line, the No. 1 Auburn men's golf team once again leaned on its talented freshman and Jackson Koivun delivered with a birdie on the 18th hole to win his match against Virginia and send the Tigers to the semifinals of the NCAA Men's Golf Championships later on Tuesday afternoon. Auburn will take on the Ohio State Buckeyes after they upset No. 2 Vanderbilt. In the other semi-final, Florida State will take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets after they upset top seed Illinois in the quarterfinal round.

Auburn got wins from Carson Bacha and Josiah Gilbert (both 2 and 1) to set the stage for Koivun's drama late in the round. Building the lead to 3 up after winning the 17th hole (eighth hole of the day for the match), Koivun found himself in a battle before stepping up on his final hole. Leaving himself a 10-foot birdie putt beneath the hole, Koivun drained it to give Auburn the win and push them to this afternoon's round against Ohio State.

The first group off the tee is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. CDT. The Golf Channel will have coverage beginning at 5 p.m.
