Should Auburn Take Six Offensive Line Recruits?

Brian Smith

3–4 minutes

Auburn's 2025 recruiting class features four offensive line recruits but should the Tigers try to reach six?

First, understand that offensive line is a position Auburn usually struggles with. Four is a great starting point. There are two offensive tackles and two interior players. With more big-time talent visiting Auburn, it's going to be hard to blame Hugh Freeze and his staff for loading up.

Among others, here is a look at the recruiting profiles for talented offensive tackles Broderick Shull and Andrew Babalola, two more prospects who could sign with the Tigers. There are other possibilities as well, but these are two of the nation's best recruits regardless of position and would be hard for Auburn to turn down.

Shull hails from Bixby (Okla.) High School. His recruiting rankings vary. On3 has him as the #19 recruit, while 247 places Shull as a 3-star. Watching his HUDL film, the 6-foot-6 and 280-pound Shull is a powerful right tackle prospect. Perhaps the trait one could be most impressed by, Shull's quickness shows itself when he pulls and takes on a defender in the hole. Few offensive tackle recruits possess the speed that Shull does, or his power when hitting a defender.

His official visit schedule includes Auburn (May 31), Texas Tech (June 14), and Texas A&M (June 21). Shull's March unofficial visit to Auburn is important as well as he's already familiar with Auburn's culture. A more recent visitor to Auburn is also a top-notch offensive tackle to discuss.

Among Auburn's official visitors this past weekend would be Andrew Babalola from Overland Park (Kan.) Blue Valley Northwest. On3 has Babalola as the #14 recruit nationally. Watching his HUDL film, it's another reminder of how important quick feet are for an offensive lineman.

Babalola is a left tackle for his prep team. Seeing him utilize quick and choppy steps to move to the linebacker level with ease is a good sign for his future. Babalola is an athlete first and foremost. Possessing the raw skills to move his 6-foot-6 and 295-pound frame in position to deliver a blow helps to define why he's become one of the nation's most heavily recruited offensive line prospects.

His official visit schedule is underway with Auburn (May 17) in his rearview mirror, plus upcoming treks to Missouri (May 31), Stanford (June 7), Michigan (June 14), and Oklahoma (June 21). Auburn is a true threat to sign him, but Babalola is reportedly high on Stanford and the other programs as well.

It's hard to find top-notch offensive line recruits, especially offensive tackles. Any combination of Shull and Babalola being added to Auburn's offensive line haul should would be great for the Tigers. So yes, taking six offensive line recruits would be a good idea for Auburn.

It's impossible to tell the story of the Iron Bowl without the clip of Auburn's Chris Davis running back a missed field goal to beat rival Alabama. For many, it still feels like a relatively recent moment in college football's storied lore.

That's why Monday's news is sure to make plenty of college football fans feel the effects of Father Time. Auburn has reportedly extended a scholarship offer to Davis' son, Chris "CJ" Davis III, a running back at Hewitt-Trussville High in Trussville, Ala.

CJ Davis has previously shared news of other offers, including ones from Florida State and Arkansas. His first offer? Well, that came from UCF coach Gus Malzahn, who was Chris Davis' coach at Auburn at the time of the legendary "Kick Six."

CJ still has plenty of time left to make a decision on where he'll play his college ball. He's in the class of 2028, meaning he will be heading into only his freshman year in high school.

However, considering the family legacy, the Tigers could make a compelling case to bring CJ to Auburn.

How old is Chris Davis?

Chris Davis was born on Nov. 4, 1990, making him 33.

What happened to Chris Davis?

Chris Davis was undrafted in 2014 and wound up signing with the Chargers. He returned 19 kicks for 476 yards for the Chargers and returned a punt for four yards. He also defended a pass and forced a fumble with 15 combined tackles.

Released after the season, the cornerback signed with the 49ers and spent a pair of seasons in San Francisco, though he saw limited playing time, logging only 99 snaps. He returned six kicks for 129 yards and made four combined tackles.

Davis spent time signed to rosters in the Alliance of American Football in 2019 and was selected by the Seattle Dragons in the XFL for the 2020 XFL Draft. He wound up coaching cornerbacks at Pinson Valley High in 2020.

There, he coached Kool-Aid McKinstry, who went on to be an All-American cornerback at Alabama before being selected in the second round of the 2024 NFL Draft by the Saints.

Chris "CJ" Davis III highlights

Davis might only be coming out of eighth grade, but he's already boasting an impressive highlight reel of plays, showing why he has early interest from Division I programs.

Brian Battie’s cousin, a Sarasota City Commissioner, says fatal shooting ‘left our family in shock’

Kyle Battie, the cousin of Brian Battie and a Sarasota City Commissioner, calls the shooting that left the Auburn running back in critical condition and killed Tommie Battie IV, Brian Battie’s older brother, a “senseless act of gun violence.”

“Hearing the news .... has left our family in shock,” Kyle Battie told the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

“My prayers are with all of the victims and their loved ones, including my cousins who lost their son Tommie and for my cousin Brian and his friend who are both fighting for their lives. We must come together to do more to save our youth from these tragic ends.”

Auburn head football coach Hugh Freeze took to social media on Monday morning, asking for prayers after Brian Battie suffered a “set back” the night prior and remained on a ventilator.

According to a Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office press release, deputies responded to the Tallywood Centre Plaza, located in the 3400 block of 17th Street in Sarasota, at approximately 3:30 a.m., where they found a large crowd with multiple shooting victims in the parking lot.

Sarasota Director of Community Affairs Evan Keats told AL.com on Tuesday that there had been no further update from the sheriff’s office outside of its initial press release, which called the shooting an “isolated incident” but did not name a suspect or a motive.

On Sunday, a GoFundMe campaign was launched in effort to support the Battie family.

“With all of the emotional pain and stress that tragedy brings, it also brings financial burdens,” wrote the campaign’s organizers.

“We would like to raise money for the Battie family to help with unforeseen funeral expenses and medical bills. The family is understandably shocked by this loss and not prepared for all that is happening at this time.”

With a goal of $100,000, the campaign has raised more than $85,000 as of Tuesday afternoon.
