Simpson one of many guys that will get a look at punt return this week

Auburn safety Jaylin Simpson has a new role this week for the Tigers.

AUBURN, Alabama—With starter Keionte Scott injured and expected to miss a significant portion of the 2023 season, and both Jay Fair and Ja'Varrius Johnson dropping punts in the win over Samford, Auburn coach Hugh Freeze said it’s all hands-on deck for the Tigers at that spot as they get ready to face Texas A&M in the SEC opener in College Station.

The first option looks to be senior safety Jaylin Simpson. Jumping into the mix a few weeks ago when he started fielding punts as a joke, he said it was a surprise when he got his name called on Saturday.

“That was my first time ever,” Simpson said. “I started like two weeks ago. It really started as a joke. I’m not on punt return and I was like ‘I’m going to go back here with the punt returners and see how hard it is.’ Coach (Marcus) Davis told me I was a natural at it. I guess coach (Tanner) Burns, our special teams coach, in the middle of the game was like ‘you’re up,’ and I was like ‘oh my goodness.’”
