Auburn LB Austin Keys out indefinitely with thumb injury

Auburn will be without Keys this weekend at Cal and possibly beyond

Auburn starting linebacker Austin Keyssuffered a thumb injury in Auburn's season-opening win over UMass and has undergone surgery, Hugh Freeze told reporters Wednesday afternoon on the SEC teleconference.

The Ole Miss transfer will be "out a while," Freeze said.

Keys, a first-team player for Auburn's defense at middle linebacker since the spring, also dealt with a shoulder injury in preseason camp that placed him in a non-contact jersey for a couple weeks of practice.

In Auburn's Week 1 win over UMass, the Tigers' rotation in the linebacking corps was balanced, with North Texas transfer Larry Nixon III leading with 22 snaps played, followed by Eugene Asante with 18, and Keys and Cam Riley tied at 17 — according to data from Pro Football Focus.

On the injury front, Auburn is hoping to get starting cornerback Nehemiah Pritchett(ankle), receiver Nick Mardner (ankle) and cornerback J.D. Rhym (leg) back for this weekend's trip to the West Coast after they did not dress against UMass. Pass-rusher Jalen McLeod (ankle) dressed but did not play.

Auburn heads to Cal for a nonconference road trip Saturday night (9:30 p.m. CDT, ESPN).

We can't lose our starting middle linebacker. Get out the duck tape.

I almost posted the same thing. That's what we used to do.

Interesting. This is what Cal's starting OLB who also has a hand injury will look like this game. Didnt realize we have crazy depth at LB and this game's a gimme.

Did he have surgery? No-one has any idea what the two injuries are just that they are both on the hand.
