the last time i looked at the leading candidate for third party was a clown. honest. a real clown. they have a lot of problems and for the last million years they have been saying they will be relevant one day. it would be nice but i think something really drastic has to happen for them to rise up.

The political right has already dealt with a fracture.  They managed to "coalesce" the Tea Party within the Republican Party.

The political left (if you can even call them that) either cannot or, will not understand progressive populism.  They still do not understand the attraction to someone like Bernie Sanders.  The problem with the Democratic Party establishment is,,, they talk about progressive ideas but, lack the courage and commitment to actually further any of those ideas.  The problem with the progressives is that, they lack the willingness to demand their place within the party.  This fear of a "reckoning" in the party is a lack of commitment to principles.  The American public may not be able to express it but, they certainly sense it.  It weakens every message.  You cannot "talk out of both sides of your mouth" and, get very far in this political environment.  The Democrats messaging is interpreted as weak because, their fear of losing power is greater than their willingness to defend principles.  That and, they cannot stand up to Wall St.  They need the money.

This country must move left (if we are going to maintain our status) politically but, we must never forget that balancing the interests of society and capital is the real goal.
