Dont want you to explode into flames but there was a time I liked desantis. On paper he’s ridiculously impressive and initially he looked like a more moderate republican. Ok, I may have missed on that one.

I was not a fan, but initially thought he was more sensible. He’s really shown himself. Done before the campaign started.

In seriousness, I think it's too early to let these one-off hit pieces define Desantis. The people I know from Florida love him. We'll know more about him once the debates start. 

For all we know Trump may have paid for this piece to be written.

The problem is that his penchant for using the power of the State to punish anyone that disagrees with him publicly is an established pattern at this point.

Some folks on here want to paint me as an extreme leftist. While I could happily live in a country like Denmark and pay high taxes for peace of mind on college costs, healthcare and general societal benefit, I don’t see that type of system gaining acceptance in the US during my lifetime so don’t insist on candidates hell bent on achieving it, but I can easily see democratic governance cratering in the near future. For those reasons, if I could wish the next President into existence it would probably be Will Hurd. Decent, thoughtful man who could hopefully temper his party and seek common ground where it exists. I don’t see Republicans choosing him because unlike me, most, not all, are actually radical.

Christie isn’t crazy. Well spoken and can talk to both sides of the isle. But his last couple of years in NJ were a total dumpster fire.

Generally speaking, the candidates of both parties who I believe to be the most rational and sane have little to no interest in signing up to run. The two party system is more interested in putting characters in office instead of character.

I could not agree more.  There are people in both parties that would govern respectfully and with concern for those who voted for them and those that did not equally, but the public is becoming so conditioned to fight instead of compromise that their election is nearly impossible.

Until the American public begins demanding accountability from their sources of information, we will be guided more by the extremes and fear of the extremes than we are by sound leadership.

The best leaders in America don't want to be in the political meat grinder.  They don't want to be defined by their clumsy or non PC statement about some issue they made 20 years ago or have their family accused of everything imaginable.

Almost every poll now breaks down %’s along these “tribal” lines.  With a total fixation on the “likely voters” tribes:  ie the more extreme a voters politics are, the more likely they are to vote and donate. Sure they may be nuts but damn they turn out.

So republicans and democrats today are just rival clans with debates about things like  1000 ft walls vs basically open borders. A who’s less crazy contest. Hopefully people begin to push back and revitalize their own party or go all in on a moderated 3rd party option.

Keep the masses arguing over what a text message means sent 8 years ago by the son of the President, while the President wasn't in office, and they don't have time to question their elected officials about why a fighter jet costs more than the yearly budget for many state governments.  Call people socialists or communists for questioning why the government spends a third of its budget on health care related spending, yet millions can't get the preventive care they need, and the status quo stays in place. 

Likewise, calling someone a racist because they want to restrict immigration or are against affirmative action programs also distracts from the real issues at hand.

Unfortunately, health care costs and our bloated defense budget aren't sexy topics.  They become even less sexy when special interest lobbyists spend millions making certain that the status quo stays in place.  As a country, we have never found answers to problems or been proactive in our actions.  We were dragged like a bouncer drags two guys fighting out of the bar into WWII. Only during the Great Depression did we make decisions needed to better the quality of life for rural Americans.  It looks like we will need to bankrupt the world before we actually decide what is important and what isn't.
