Right, but unfortunately he's coming off a really mediocre year, giving ppl justification to have him low vs "he has 4* and one a good team"

If he has the same exact numbers as the last year, his mediocre year, I think it would rank as the 3rd best season statistically by a QB in AU history. 2700 yards and 19 TDs passing…

There were several podcasts a month ago taking about this. Wish I could remember the dates so I could share with everyone.

Just because Auburn has horrible historical QB stats doesn't mean anything when ranking a performance vs the SEC in 2023.

Throne's numbers are pretty mediocre in 22
62% 2900yds 19/11 td/int Y/A 6.9 (really low) QB Rate 131 (meh) -- Also, all of his "hard" games are really really bad except maybe Washington (hopefully that UW game was pre-injury and a good sign for us)

Modern Seasons that are better than Throne's 22 season.  Count 6

  • Both of Stidham's years have higher QB Rates, 1 better Comp %, better YPA, better TD/INT Ratio, one more yards
  • Both of Nick Marshall's seasons have higher QB rates.  He threw a ton less attempts hurting his volume stats, but had a much higher YPA (Throne's '21 YPA was pretty solid).  Pretty sure all his ratios are better which is why his QB Rate is higher
  • Cam - It was one of the highest most efficiently rated season for a QB.  QB Rate 182
  • Jason Campbell 2004 - Similar to Cam, QB Rate was 171.  Nearly all other volume stats the same, higher TD/INT.  YPA was 10.  that's huge

I agree with @W.E.Don this. Payton Thorne has multiple years of experience as a starter in the only other relevant power 5 conference. He's displayed consistent accuracy and decision making ability, from what we have heard, he has the leadership part down. There is absolutely no way, outside of injury that Hugh Freeze doesn't fully expect him to start game 1. We haven't seen Robbie do anything that would indicate that he can be a winning QB in the SEC, and Holden is completely unknown, hasn't been able to take the job in perhaps the easiest 2 years to take it. Why would you start someone like that with no experience when you have someone older, more experience, and with tons of film?

I know that it isn't politically correct to write kids off, because we are all supposed to believe that they can accomplish anything if they outwork everyone. But that's not realistic. This is semi professional football with tons of money involved and there are knowns and unknowns. Peyton Thorne is a starter for Auburn just like ARod is a starter for the Jets. You just don't bring a guy with that much experience in to ride the bench.

Let's just read the room.  Freeze went through a full spring after trying his hardest to get multiple QBs.  Then went hard at QBs after spring and brought in a guy with 2 years starting experience.

I'm sure we'd all love to do the cliché  "No one is the starter yet, let them compete, etc"....but read the room here.

Well you just named the best years in AU history as examples. 2 of those teams were undefeated and the other one played for a title (and lost) or an sec title.
You are making my point. If he does what he did last year, we should be pretty good this year. If that is the floor - wow!

Wait, wait , wait , wait

People really think we bought Thorne in here  this late in the game to NOT start?!

the only way he doesn’t start is if he is injured or got into child porn.

No, that's not the point I'm making.  Those teams aren't our '23 team.  Outside a season from Cam & Jason Campbell, the other 4 would be middle of the pack SEC QBs for the '23 season.  Purely passing stats, both Cam & JC would probably be like 2-4th most recent season.

If Thorne has his 2022 numbers we're probably 6-6 to 8-4 depending on defense and getting smoked by LSU, UGA, Bama...just like he got smoked by those similar teams in the B12 last year.  That puts him somewhere between like 6th-12th in the SEC depending on what other QBs do.  You're going to see nearly the entire top 3/4 of the conference with ~3k+ yards and 20+ TDs.  That isn't going to be anything special.

I think (hoping) he's better than his '22 season and he was dealing with some injuries limiting his mobility and arm strength downfield.

I just want improvement. We haven’t had anything close to his numbers last year at quarterback except for championship run seasons.
If we go 8-4 this year that would be remarkable and better than anyone is predicting.
I just find it funny that people are saying that his numbers last year were terrible, but when you look them in an Auburn context, they really weren’t that bad at all.
I mean, if you want to see bad, look at our starting quarterback numbers from last year. Haha

I want improvement too. Everyone wants improvement.

Apparently most everyone here has decided the one and only route to improvement is Thorne and that he is automatically anointed QB1 before even participating in a practice.

Personally, I'm throwing my lot in with CHF and Fall Practice. Ima gonna letta himma decide based on what he sees in the OL, the TEs and WRs, the RBs, and the QB who fits in best with those players.

My expectation is that we will see more than one QB in the first couple of games, along with multiple variations on the OL, before CHF and his offensive staff make their final decision on QB, OL, TE, and WR.

I don’t know. But KJ Jefferson just doesn’t seem good enough to be on top of any best QB list outside of best QB at Arkansas, Best QB in the State of Arkansas, and maybe best QB named KJ Jefferson.

For what it's worth, KJ Jefferson and Caleb Williams are the only P5 QBs to rank in the top 10 in QB rating each of the last two seasons. KJ actually had a better season last year statistically despite losing Treylon Burks and missing games due to injury.

Maybe I'm just looking at it wrong. Just seems off to have him at the top.

Statistically he is solid but I agree…the SEC qb class looking shaky

I expect the top dog teams to have the best QB's this year, statistically. Jayden Daniels and Joe Milton, specifically. Jayden has the experience and top talent around him. And any QB in Heupel's system is going to look good.

Joe Milton has the best deep ball and size to go with it but he really is going to have to work on his immediate yard accuracy. He has the highest ceiling . Jayden is a high IQ ball. I agree with you on both .
