Auburn is a Top 100 university.  How the SEC stacked up (including TX and OU in italics since they're lame ducks in the Big XII):

School (national rank)

Vanderbilt (13)
Florida (29)
Texas (38)
Georgia (49)
A&M (67)
AUBURN (97)
South Carolina (115)
Missouri (121)
Oklahoma (127)
Alabama (137 - tie)
Kentucky (137 - tie)
Ole Miss (151)
LSU (176 - tie)
Arkansas (176 - tie)
Mississippi State (194)

I'll also note, the top end of the rankings are dominated by private institutions (Ivy League, Stanford, Vandy type schools).  In terms of public universities, Auburn ranks 43rd if I counted right.

i thought UAB would be rated higher. i know a lot of folks have claimed at least in the past they were one of the best schools if not the best in the state.

I think they're one of the best medical/bio-med schools around, but their other colleges are just ok.

AU and Clemson tied for 61st in engineering. Many private schools ranked at the top and above those two. Florida and Vandy represent the SEC near the top of the list I saw with a quick search.
