AOC, Ilhan Omar Call Out Republican Racism in Fiery Floor Speeches

It's not a huge secret why the GOP kicked the Minnesota representative off the Foreign Affairs Committee

The House of Representatives voted to remove Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) from the Foreign Affairs Committee on Thursday. The final tally was 218-211, with one member voting present. The vote was largely seen as revenge for Democrats electing to strip Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) and Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) of their committee assignments for suggesting violent action be taken against their political opponents.

The vote didn’t stop Democrats from going to bat for their colleague, with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) pinpointing the real reason for the vote during a fiery speech on the House floor.

“One of the disgusting legacies after 9/11 has been the targeting and racism against Muslim-Americans throughout the United States of America, and this is an extension of that legacy,” she said. “There is nothing consistent with the Republican Party’s continued attacks, except for the racism and incitement of violence against women of color in this body.”

“Don’t tell me this is about consistency,” she continued. “Don’t tell me this is about a condemnation of antisemitic remarks when you have a member of the Republican caucus who has talked about Jewish space lasers and other tropes and also elevated her to some of the highest committee assignments in this body. This is about targeting women of color in the United States of America.”

AOC is referring to Greene, who despite pushing antisemitic tropes — including the idea that a satellite funded by a Jewish family is responsible for the California wildfires — has been embraced by Republican leadership and given plum committee assignments. She also called out the GOP for elevating Gosar, who in 2021 posted a video depicting AOC’s murder.

Republicans have tried to argue that the move to boot Omar from the Foreign Affairs Committee is related to her past criticism of Israel. Omar in 2019 tweeted “It’s all about the Benjamins baby” in trying to explain why politicians are so committed to defending Israel. She later wrote “AIPAC!” in response to a tweet asking her who she thinks is giving politicians money to support Israel, referring to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, a pro-Israel lobbying group. Omar was accused of antisemitism, prompting her to apologize “unequivocally.” On Thursday, Omar signed onto a resolution recognizing Israel as a “legitimate” ally of the United States.

Editor’s picks

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said earlier this week that it would be “dangerous” for Omar to continue to serve on the committee, while misrepresenting Omar’s past comments.

Omar also spoke in her own defense on Thursday. “There is an idea that you are a suspect if you are an immigrant or if you are from certain parts of the world or a certain skin tone or a Muslim,” she said. “It is no accident that members of the Republican Party accused the first Black president, Barack Obama, of being a secret Muslim. It is no accident that former President Donald Trump led a birther movement that falsely claimed he was born in Kenya. To them, falsely labeling the first and only [Black] president a Muslim and African immigrant somehow made him less America. Well, I am Muslim. I am an immigrant and, interestingly, from Africa. It anyone surprised that I am being targeted?”

“I will continue to speak up, because representation matters,” Omar said.

Speaking of which - I recently had pre-surgical screening for some elective surgery and the nurse asked if I would permit the hospital to administer a blood transfusion in the (unlikely) event it became necessary.  I told her of course.

We got to talking about the reasons a patient might deny that permission and she told me that some patients refuse because the hospital could not guarantee the blood donor had not been vaccinated - they refused to accept blood from a vaccinated donor!

The nurse pressed her a little and asked if she would really rather die than accept blood from a vaccinated donor, and she said yes, she'd rather die first

Think about that.

And apparently, this is not the first time this has happened. They've had other patients who refused permission on the same basis.

This country is in trouble.

It similar to the 23 yo woman that had a hysterectomy after Roe was overturned.  Common sense is not so common anymore.

I’m going in for knee replacement (2nd knee) in about a week.  Good luck on you surgery.

Early last summer I came in contact with campylobacter bacteria and got sick and due to being a heart patient and on some major blood thinners I ended up in the ER losing substantial amounts of blood. Long story short....ended up needing 6 units of blood. I did not give a damn where the blood came from as long as it matched.

Good luck on the surgery.

Adam Schiff and Eric Swalwell also got removed from committee's, not just Ilhan Omar.

Just thought I'd mention that since there's no articles on here about either of them being removed.

Uh Ilhan, Muslim is not a race. So not racism.  Trump did not lead the birther movement, that was led by Hillary Clinton. Get your facts straight. I do believe that Obama is a closet muslim. He once stated that there are different paths to the same place (heaven). No Christian would say that.

There is absolutely no truth to anything you typed.  NONE (other than Trump did not lead the birther movement).

You are a very consistent liar.

Nothing I wrote can be disputed. Calling me a liar does not work. Muslim is not a race. There are white black and brown muslims. Hillary DID lead the birther movement. You are seriously wrong about what you claim to be the truth. Not lying. Truth.

This country is in trouble.

This somehow reminds me of the story about the team of surgeons who performed emergency surgery on Ronald Reagan after he was shot by John Hinckley.  After the shooting, the Secret Service got Reagan back in the limo and were afraid they did not have time to get him to the Naval Hospital, so they rushed him to George Washington University Hospital.  Reagan was then rushed into the operating room, where he said "I sure hope all of you out there are Republicans".

The head of the Trauma Team was present, and replied "Mr. President, for today, we're all Republicans".

Everyone present, including Reagan, laughed so hard they "brought the house down", as one surgeon quipped.

Good luck on your surgery.  I'm recovering from recent surgery myself.

You paying for it "out of pocket" or is Medicare picking it up?

Comes from Blumenthal. One of their most trusted advisors. Hillary's silence is tacit approval. She would never get her hands dirty. As usual somebody else steps up to take her heat.

You consistently lie.  You are a liar.  You do not know the truth.

I have supplemental ins and last time it cost $225.  Well worth the money.  I’m not looking forward to the rehab, but 3 months down the road I’ll be ready for summer.

Do you know what the out-of-pocket cost would be?

Likely over $100,000 dollars.  So that makes you a socialist, right?

Do you mean if I didn’t have insurance?  Or Medicare that I pay for?

Last time it was around $75,000.  How does paying for insurance make me a socialist?

The same way not owning an electric tractor (which doesn't even exist) makes me a global warming hypocrite. <_<

Did you miss this? John 14:6.

I interpret that verse as having a relationship with God is the path to heaven. There are many different cultures throughout the world. Who is to say the other religions of the world aren't just different avenues of creating a relationship with the same God that are more relatable to those cultures?

Jesus said it. If you go thru Him you are good. Doesn’t really seem to need much interpretation. But you do you and pick a different Saviour.

So even though we believe in the same God, but interpret his teachings differently, I shouldn't be allowed to believe in our God? Aren't you being exactly like the Pharisees in Jesus's time?

No. Pharisees were Jews that denied Jesus was the Messiah. I believe Jesus is the Messiah. So Pharisees and me would be on opposite sides.  You are welcome to believe in whatever God you choose.  Why does your belief have anything to do with me? If you don’t believe the Bible Old or New Testament is truth then it’s no problem.  I believe it.
