I am a disabled Veteran who lives in a red state and close to a military base. I am used to seeing them show up to take pictures and shake hands but drop the ball when it comes to taking care of Veterans. I have advocated along with other Veterans for years for patients to have access to Cannabis in Tx and every two years is like pulling teeth to get issues added to TCUP, just last session we finally got PTSD added. Which is sad because our medical amount is still far less than any other state and all the states that surround us have a more comprehensive medical program.

These midterms are SO IMPORTANT, you need two more democratic senators - so I hope you are our campaigning and encouraging your friends and family to vote. 50% voter turnout last presidential election, you have to do better

I tell my Republican friends like this. In the US our election system gives us a binary choice. If you're doing 60 on a two line, next to a big old ditch full of nasty, funky swamp water, and a Mack truck coming toward you crosses the line into your lane. You have a binary choice. Just because you choose not to take the truck doesn't mean that you WANT to be in the ditch. You can't vote Republican this time.

Trae, the only aspect of the military the GOP has any love for at all is A. Military contract lobbyists and B. Corporate military contractors. Individual military personnel, their families, veterans, and anyone else, not so much. If you want to see Republicans go to battle and froth from the mouth just have a discussion on the House or Senate floor about regulating the lobbyist or open an investigation into wasteful military spending or sexual assault in the military and the GOP will all a suddenly get very protective about the military.

The president championed significant health care reforms and veterans’ choice, something he’s achieved through the Mission Act of 2018 — the biggest and most comprehensive VA health care reform in decades.

Under the Obama-Biden administration, veterans had access to a number of dysfunctional community care programs, but only if the VA decided to allow them to go — the veteran had no say and no choice in selecting their health care provider. This led to a number of major VA health care scandals, including the VA Phoenix Medical Center wait-time fiasco, where veterans died waiting for their health care.

 

President Trump’s first ever comprehensive fix to the Choice Program is modeled after the successful DoD Tricare access standards and urgent care choice. If the VA can’t meet the wait-time or drive time standards, then the veteran gets to pick the provider of their choice. With the new urgent care benefit, veterans now have the choice to go to an urgent care provider any time they want, without VA permission.

For decades veterans wanted this type of choice, but nobody thought it was possible and no legislation was passed. In 2016, the Commission on Care recommended more choice, but no one acted on that either, except for President Trump with the 2018 Mission Act.

In the 2019 Veterans of Foreign Wars Our Care Report, 6,900 veterans were surveyed and they noticed big improvement in VA health care due to the Mission Act. Nearly three-quarters, 74%, reported seeing improvements at their local VA. Wait times are shorter and expanded community care options are available, resulting in improved health care outcomes. In fact, positive opinion of the new urgent care benefits has been reported as a result of new executive leadership at the VA and expanded community care options.

Veterans have the health care choice they wanted and progress in fixing decades worth of systemic VA health care problems that were ignored or given short-term Band-Aid-type fixes by the Obama-Biden administration.

• Modernized medical records to begin a seamless transition from the Department of Defense to the VA
• Launched a new tool that provides Veterans with online access to average wait times and quality-of-care data
• The promised White House VA Hotline has fielded hundreds of thousands of calls
• Formed the PREVENTS Task Force to fight the tragedy of Veteran suicide

Decreased Veteran homelessness, improved education benefits, and achieved record-low Veteran unemployment

• Signed and implemented the Forever GI Bill, allowing Veterans to use their benefits to get an education at any point in their lives
• Eliminated every penny of Federal student loan debt owed by American Veterans who are completely and permanently disabled
• Compared to 2009, 49 percent fewer Veterans experienced homelessness nationwide during 2019
• Signed and implemented the HAVEN Act to ensure that Veterans who have declared bankruptcy don’t lose their disability payments
• Helped hundreds of thousands of military service members make the transition from the military to the civilian workforce, and developed programs to support the employment of military spouses
• Placed nearly 40,000 homeless Veterans into employment through the Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program
