Auburn’s coaches made a couple tweaks to the team’s official depth chart heading into its Week 2 matchup against San Jose State.

There were two notable changes made to the two-deep following Auburn’s 42-16 season-opening win against Mercer, both of them coming on the offensive side of the ball.

Statistically speaking: Where Auburn’s defense can improve after Week 1 win

Wide receiver Ja’Varrius Johnson leapfrogged Tar’Varish Dawson Jr. as the Tigers’ starting slot receiver after his big-time performance in Week 1. Johnson caught four passes for 117 yards on four targets against Mercer. He was on the receiving end of Auburn’s two longest pass plays of the game -- a 39-yarder from T.J. Finley in the first quarter that set up Auburn’s second touchdown of the night, as well as a career-long 56-yarder from Robby Ashford midway through the third quarter that led to Jarquez Hunter’s third rushing touchdown of the game.

For Johnson, a redshirt junior and one of the team’s most experienced wide receivers, it was a career high in receiving yards and marked just the second 100-yard receiving game of his Auburn career.

“He does make plays,” Auburn coach Bryan Harsin said. “You saw that. I know he wanted to get in the end zone on a couple of those. He’s just that close to punch it in there. And that’s the goal, right, to try to take that thing and put it in the end zone like he did against Arkansas last year and complete the catch and run and score touchdowns. But he can do those things for us.”

The other change on the official two-deep came at right guard, where the “OR” between Kam Stutts and Keiondre Jones on the top line was removed. Stutts is now listed as Auburn’s lone starter at right guard, where he got the nod against Mercer in Week 1. Jones, who started most of the last two seasons at that position, is now listed as the No. 2 at right guard. He still saw ample playing time against Mercer, and head coach Bryan Harsin indicated Monday that Stutts and Jones will continue to split time along the offensive line.

“I think both guys covered up, ran their feet, did what they’re supposed to do,” Harsin said. “You know, that happened back in camp, too. Stutts probably had a little of the upper hand, and KJ started coming on. So both guys, we’re trying to figure out who that right guard position is. You know, if something happens at center or left guard, too, those guys can bump around. They can play both. We can continue with that formula right now, unless something changes. But I thought they both played pretty good.”
