Are y'all sure the players are actually ending their careers, or are they just not actually transferring?

I mean, this *is* a thread devoted to a kid who tested the waters and then withdrew from the portal and who is still on his team. Just wanted to make sure we're all clear on that.

As a 42-year-old that never played a down of college football, and works in IT, my guess is that the portal gets increasingly used to test the waters.  I think we will end up seeing an influx of recruited G5 players, that don't want to ride the bench, looking to transfer elsewhere.

No, but withdrawing his name from the portal would be an odd choice if not.

True, I'll be very interested to see how this one plays out.

Still trying to figure out what Ben Carson has to do with a football player transferring to a different college.

Just wondering if you figured it out yet?   I am still stumped.

For the sake of my sanity, I quit trying.

And how many of the transfers were "nudged" by their coaches to leave? We will never know, but it happens all the time. The coaches may have decided their playing careers were already over, so this at least gives them another chance.

Oh, and non-athletes frequently change schools. No one has a problem with that.

"The NCAA has studied the issue of student-athlete transfers. A 2020 poll conducted by Gallup for the NCAA found that "a smaller proportion of NCAA student-athletes (22%) than non-athletes (38%) transferred to the institution from which they graduated."

I agree cbo. Another form of processing? In AU's case, our scholarships are for 4 years (not every year renewable scholarships) which makes our processing a little more problematic than for some other schools. Please let me know if this is incorrect and I will stand corrected. wde

I thought at one time that we had both kinds but has been awhile since then, so may have changed since then.

If the kid leaves, then the forfeits the scholarship.

Is it harder to convince a kid to leave when he knows he's got a full ride at Auburn? I dunno. But I wouldn't imagine many kids would want to hang around a locker room in which they know they're not wanted. Especially when just about any player on scholarship at Auburn could land at a G5 program at worst with a great shot at winning a starting job.

Don't disagree at all Loof. I was just wondering if the guarantee 4 year scholarship at AU changes the thought process of a student athlete who sees the value of their education vs their self-evaluated limited athletic limitations. Also, does it hinder the coaching staff in offering a scholarship to a perceived fringe HS player just because you have one (some) available. wde

Hadn't thought about it that way. Good question.

Maybe it's like @Hank2020 said and they have both.

Thanks for the feedback from both you and Hank. Would be interested if anyone else has thoughts/insight on this. wde

I don't think this is true.  We told Kobe to leave & his scholarship wouldn't be renewed.

Those are good questions. I'm not sure how the scholarships work these days.
