Auburn QBs Throw to Wideouts in Camp

AUBURN, Alabama–Although there have been changes in his coaching staff, deep snapper and holder, senior Anders Carlson says everything is going smoothly as the senior kicker prepares for Auburn’s 2021 season opener vs. Akron.

“I have been improving every day,” he said. “That is my goal to get one percent better each and every day and sometimes it’s hard to measure when you are just stacking days on days, but so far I have had a great camp.

“We have kicked some closer field goals, but I haven’t missed yet so I have stacked good days in camp and I am excited to get the season underway and hopefully those results pay off.”

Last season he put together one of the best seasons in program history for a field goal kicker. He made 20-22 attempts. Carlson hit 8-8 tries under 30 yards, 5-6 from 30-39, 5-5 from 40-49 and 2-3 from 50 yards or longer without any blocks.

The Tigers are replacing last year’s deep snapper, Bill Taylor. Carlson said so far he likes what he has seen on the snaps and holds. “The entire specialist group has been doing great right now,” he said.

“We are working a lot of guys (at deep snapper). I think mainly Jacob Quattlebaum, but along with that we have got Reed Hughes and Kyle Vaccarella. They are all doing great, coming along real solid.”

Quattlebaum is a 6-1, 223 junior from Enterprise. Hughes is a 6-1, 221 redshirt freshman from Conway, Ark. Vaccarella is a 6-3, 231 freshman from Fairfield, Conn.

A second team All-American as a junior by the American Football Coaches Association, Carlson is heading into his fourth season as Auburn’s starting kicker. During that time he has seen a lot of deep snapping and he said that he is encouraged by the current group.

“They are good at what they do,”?he said. ‘They can snap the ball back very accurately. I think we had a clip in the team room of the laces coming straight forward seven times in a row in practice so all the snappers are doing great with that. Maybe it took a few days to adjust, but we have been rolling ever since we made that adjustment.”

The younger brother of NFL kicker and former Tiger star Daniel Carlson, Auburn’s current kicker has scored 275 points, the fifth highest total in Auburn history.

“In terms of holder, we are still working guys,” he said. “We have got Jackson McFadden out there, we have got Oscar Chapman and a few other guys we are working. It’s early in camp, but so far everyone’s been great. We have been making kicks so I’m happy where we are at.”

McFadden, who also plays wide receiver, is a 6-1, 198 junior from Nashville, Tenn. Oscar Chapman, who punts for the Tigers, is a 6-1, 197 sophomore from Adelaide, Australia.

The Tigers began preseason camp last Friday, but long before that opened the senior was getting prepared for his senior year. “We worked a ton,” he said of his summer schedule. “We got bored so we would come out to the field and get some extra work almost every day we were out here.”

Asked if his new coaches have changed practices for the kickers, Carlson said, “There have been some minor adjustments. Obviously, at the end of the day you are kicking the ball through the sticks–there’s not much difference. I think the reps are a little different and I like the change. So far Coach (Bryan Harsin) has kind of spaced out reps so you have got two in the beginning of practice, two in the middle and maybe you will end with a game-winner at the end of practice.”

Carlson said last season he would kick eight field goals at the beginning of practice in an 11 on 11 drill and then he would work on his own. “I kind of like it–it’s more realistic, it’s more like a game getting reps throughout the entire practice,” he said of this year’s practices.
