After holding a morning practice for its veteran players on Friday, Auburn held an afternoon practice session for its newcomers to wrap up the first day of fall camp.

The split-squad practices allowed Auburn an opportunity to get everyone adequate reps as the teams gears up for the season, and the “newcomer” session actually included multiple returning players -- likely to make sure there were enough players at each position on both sides of the ball at each practice Friday. The media was granted a 20-minute viewing window for the early session, and observations from that practice can be found here. As for the afternoon, the local media was given a window of approximately 15 minutes to check out the newcomers.

Here are some of our observations from the small viewing opportunity:

-- The afternoon practice, unsurprisingly, was structured similarly to the morning session. We got to mostly see individual position drills.

-- While several of Auburn’s transfers participated in the morning session, the remainder of them were out there for the newcomers practice. That includes West Virginia cornerback Dreshun Miller, JUCO transfer Ro Torrence, LSU quarterback transfer T.J. Finley, Central Michigan running back transfer Jordon Ingram and UAB defensive tackle transfer Tony Fair.

-- Finley rotated at quarterback with freshman early enrollee Dematrius Davis and walk-on Sawyer Pate. The running backs working with them were Ingram, three-star freshman Jarquez Hunter and walk-on Sean Jackson.

-- Wide receiver J.J. Evans was an apparent full participant in Friday’s afternoon session. The redshirt freshman, who sustained a leg injury during the spring, was one of several returning players working at receiver in the afternoon and was moving well during position drills. Seniors Shedrick Jackson, who was also limited in the spring, and Caylin Newton were also working at receiver during the afternoon session, along with freshman Tar’Varish Dawson.

-- After John Samuel Shenker and Luke Deal worked with the offense in the morning, Brandon Frazier and freshman Landen King were both seen repping at tight end in the afternoon. Like the morning session, the duo spent the first period working on blocking drills before shifting over to receiving drills with the quarterbacks.

-- A quick look at the offensive line from the afternoon saw freshman Garner Langlo at left tackle, Tate Johnson at left guard, Jalil Irvin at center, walk-on Thomas Kirkham at right guard and Brenden Coffey at right tackle. Freshman Colby Smith also rotated in at tackle. Keiondre Jones, who participated in the morning session, appeared to be present and observing the offensive line during the afternoon session.
