Auburn football: Top 10 passing yards in a single game by a Tiger

Brian Stultz
4-5 minutes

For much of its history, Auburn has been known for running the ball and producing great running backs while the quarterback position was much more of a game manager.

That hasn’t been the case for the past 25-plus years, though, as the Tigers have had some quality passers coming through the Plains. From Patrick Nix to Jason Campbell to Cam Newton, Auburn fans have seen some exciting signal-callers put on the burnt orange and navy blue.

Yet who has had the best games of them all? Here are the top 10 passing yards by an Auburn quarterback in a single game with three quarterbacks making the list twice and one surprise omission.

Yards: 370

Score: Auburn 32, Army 29

Auburn had the 1996 Independence Bowl in hand with a 32-7 lead over Army going into the fourth quarter but the Black Knights fought back, scoring 22 unanswered straight. Only a missed field goal let the Tigers escape with the victory.

Craig threw two touchdown passes and ran for a score.

Nix wasted no time making some noise in the 1995 season as he shredded the Rebels defense in the season opener. This was Nix’s second-highest passing yards in a game.

Stidham and the Tigers poured it on early and often against the Boilermakers,  setting a record for most points scored in the first half of a bowl game with 56. The Auburn quarterback finished 15-of-21 with five touchdown passes while sitting out most of the second half.

In the 2004 SEC Championship Game, the Volunteers had no answer for Campbell and the Auburn offense as he put up a then-record 374 yards and three touchdowns to finish off the regular season undefeated.

Yards: 381

Score: Auburn 48, Louisiana Tech 41 (OT)

Cobb and Tech’s Luke McCown had a personal battle in this one with the Auburn quarterback throwing a touchdown in overtime to win the game for the Tigers. Cobb finished with five touchdown passes on the day.

Auburn fell behind to the Razorbacks 27-0 at halftime but Nix and company fought back, ultimately falling short when a 52-yard field-goal attempt by Matt Hawkins was tipped.

The ringing cowbells were no problem for Craig and the Tigers on this day as they jumped out to a big lead led by a monster game from the Auburn quarterback. The play I remember the most? Auburn was pinned in its own one-yard line when Craig dropped back and threw an absolute gem for a gain of about 50 yards.

Going up against Chad Henne, Anthony Thomas and the mighty Wolverines, Leard put on a show of his own in the 2001 Citrus Bowl. The Auburn quarterback finished 28-of-37 for 394 yards and three touchdowns to two interceptions as a last-minute comeback attempt just fell short.

Score: Auburn 38, Georgia 21

The Bulldogs had no chance against Leard, Ronney Daniels and the Tigers as Auburn jumped out to a shocking 31-0 lead at halftime behind four first half touchdown passes by Leard.

Nick Marshall is just a running quarterback, right? That isn’t what the Alabama secondary was thinking following this shootout between the two rivals. Marshall finished 27-of-43 for 456 yards and three touchdown as Auburn fell just short to the Crimson Tide.

One surprise omission?   Would that be Cam, or Sully?  Both won Heismans here.  Is the surprise omission supposed to be Jeremy Johnson, or Sean White?  Maybe Bo Nix?

Not surprised to see Pat Nix and D. Craig on there multiple times.  That stupid Tater Tot offense under-utilized the run game and made the QBs chunk it all day long.

Stidham threw for 373 and 5 TDs on only 15 completions!  Wow!!!!  That was a fun half of football against the Boilermakers!!!  Any chance we can schedule those guys again?😁

Man, that offensive showing in the 2014 Iron Bowl... We would've won a Natty that year if our defense wasn't so incompetent that LT Dan could've rushed for 100 yards against them.

Truly one of the dumbest defensive game plans I’ve ever seen.   Not double teaming Cooper was mind blowing.

The time management at the end of the first half was Gus in nutshell

One of the greatest catches in AU history I’ve ever seen followed by running off almost the entire clock followed by a RB Dive...instead of a rub route...or hell, a Marshall RPO...a QB keeper around the wide side of the field with 4.4 speed at the worst.

No...run that RB Dive...they’ll never see it coming.

Yup...that summed up Gus.
