What each Auburn position coach is inheriting in 2021

ByNathan King

6-7 minutes

Which Auburn position coach from Bryan Harsin's 2021 staff is best set up for success this fall?

With winter workouts getting under way this week, the Tigers' new assistants — plus Cadillac Williams, the lone retention from Gus Malzahn's final staff — are now tasked with recruiting future players and getting to know those in their position group better before spring practices roll around.

When the Tigers do return to the practice field in a couple months, which coach will have the greatest amount of production returning from last year's team in his room? We broke down each position's group relevant statistics from the 2020 season to uncover the answer.

For production rates in each position room, the percentages derive only from players of that group from last season. For example, Auburn returns 80% of its rushing yardage from running backs this coming season, but that number does not include the entire team's rushing total. If it did, it would be higher, since quarterback Bo Nix is back after compiling 388 yards on the ground in 2020.

Here are a few more notes: Though it wasn't officially announced when he was hired, new defensive coordinator Derek Mason is also expected to coach safeties. Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo will handle the quarterback room. For the linebacking corps, we did our best to split players into inside and outside 'backers based on their play styles in the past. Mason will be implementing a new base defense that differs from Kevin Steele's, so we'll have to wait and see how those players are officially sorted out.

Lastly, it's been reported that new defensive line coach Tracy Rocker is planning to leave Auburn and join the Philadelphia Eagles. Nothing is official on that front, so we're going to leave his name on this list.

People are sleeping on this. Sure, I'd love to be rolling 3 deep with nothing by 5*s, too, but this is a very good thing.

They seem to be missing a couple good ones.

The AU QB roster has to be toward the bottom of the league.

Agreed. There was no backup plan if Bo got hurt. Really hope Harsin gets us to the point where we're not struggling into the 4th qtr against lower tiered teams.

Our backup qbs totalled 8 YARDS last season. I know it was an all SEC schedule last year, but I know the backups barely got any reps in Gus' tenure unless you count the QB carousel in 2015.
