Kellen Moore: Bryan Harsin brings 'successful brand of football'

ByNathan King

No one knows Bryan Harsin's coaching successes more closely than Kellen Moore.

With Harsin as his quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator at Boise State from 2008-11, Moore threw for 14,667 yards (sixth-most in college football history) and 142 touchdowns (second-most ever) en route to 50 wins (most in college football history) as the Broncos' four-year starting quarterback.

Harsin was hired as Auburn's new head coach for a multitude of reasons, including his impressive winning percentage (.784) as Boise State's head coach for the past seven seasons. But because of Moore and a few other successful signal-callers, Harsin is also well-renowned as an innovator in the passing game and an elite quarterback developer.

"Bryan Harsin is a phenomenal coach and person who will bring an exciting and successful brand of football to Auburn University," Moore said in a letter from the desk of Auburn athletic director Allen Greene on Monday night.

Moore, who currently serves as the Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator and is a prime candidate to fill Harsin's head-coaching vacancy in Boise, touted the nation's No. 1 and No. 2 quarterback ratings in 2010 and 2009, respectively, as he was named the WAC Offensive Player of the Year and was an All-American in back-to-back seasons. During Auburn's run to a BCS national title, Moore finished fourth in Heisman voting as Cam Newton took home the award.

"He has been a great mentor to me," Moore said, "and I know he will make a positive impact on everyone in the Auburn program."

Harsin's other passers have seen high levels of success, too. In his first two seasons as the Broncos' offensive coordinator, Harsin's two QBs before Moore Jared Zabransky and Taylor Tharp — also finished with top-10 quarterback ratings in their respective seasons.

In the meat of Harsin's tenure as Boise State's head coach, QB Brett Rypien started four years and finished with the No. 2 in program history, behind Moore, in both passing yards and passing touchdowns. Rypien was the Mountain West's offensive player of the year in 2018.

Hank Bachmeier, Harsin's quarterback for the past two seasons, said last week in an interview with Auburn Undercover that Harsin will bring a "fantastic offensive mind" to the Tigers.

“People always say to never follow a coach but one of the biggest reasons why I went to Boise State was because of Coach Harsin,” Bachmeier said. “He has a great track record of winning and developing great quarterbacks in a very complex and multiple offense that translates to the next level.”

Added Greene in his letter: "He has extensive experience recruiting and developing quarterbacks, and producing high-powered offenses. ... Coach Harsin is an elite teacher who will be keenly invested in the holistic development of our players, helping them compete and succeed in every aspect of their lives."

Hired last Tuesday and formally introduced on Christmas Eve, Harsin is attending Auburn's bowl practices this week, watching from afar as he continues to build relationships with players and formulate a plan to fill out his assistant coaching staff.

Auburn faces Northwestern in the Citrus Bowl on New Year's Day (noon CST, ABC).

"In the days since we announced the hiring of Coach Harsin, I've sensed a renewed enthusiasm among many of our fans," Greene said. "Now is the time to unite and put our shoulder to the wheel. It will take all of us — Coach Harsin, his staff, student-athletes, donors and fans — pulling in the same direction to take Auburn where we all want to go."
