ESPN’s flagship pregame college football show is heading to Athens, Ga., for the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry.

College GameDay will broadcast live from Athens next weekend for an expected top-10 showdown between longstanding SEC rivals Auburn and Georgia. It will be the show’s first time in Athens since last September, when Georgia hosted Notre Dame in an early-season top-25 nonconference matchup.

This will be the first time College GameDay will be broadcast from the site of the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry since 2004, when the show aired from the Plains ahead of a matchup between top-five programs.

Auburn last appeared on College GameDay last season when it visited Florida in Gainesville, Fla. The show also broadcasted from Auburn’s season-opener against Oregon last season in Arlington, Texas.

Auburn is coming off a season-opening win against Kentucky at Jordan-Hare Stadium, while Georgia opened its season with a road win against Arkansas.

I’ve heard so many horror stories about people going to athens for a game (multiple fanbases) and they said it was the worst gameday experience they ever had Bc of how rude the fans are, even to just your average person going to the game that isn’t obnoxious or a smack talker.

Its true I've told the story before but I went to this game in a wheelchair at the time. After we won on the way out it got a little scary uga fans shouting at me cussing pouring drinks so and so................I went to the game with a uga fan who was trying to keep them away

I’ve heard the pouring drinks thing way too many times too, especially from women that I know wouldnt piss someone off at a football game. Everybody I’ve ever encountered all labeled it as a cesspool

Wife is a UGA grad. It’s bad. I was at the Knowshon Moreno blackout game in the UGA student section. I almost got in multiple fights and my white button down was brown with bourbon and coke by the time I left.

Better man than me lol. The Clemson game a few years ago was the only time I have ever legitimately gotten into it with an opposing fan. Dudes were obnoxious, a 70 year old woman told them to calm down and watch the language. They continued, and then “accidentally” spilled their drink on her and laughed about it. That’s when I stood up and let them have it (verbally)  and they were quiet the rest of the game lol. I was fully prepared to get escorted out lol. Had it been spilled on me, ugh, it makes me grit my teeth just thinking about it 😂

That’s crazy. Clemson fans are the second worse to me. During an Aubur-Clemson game a few years back in the GA dome, I was watching the game with my family in the Clemson section (mom and brother went there). I got hit in the back of the head with an open can of dip for standing up when we were on offense. Needless to say, I did get kicked out of that game. Although it was because there were 10 angry Clemson fans and 1 angry Auburn fan so the security folks took the easy way out.

edit: it got a lot worse after the dip can but I’ll stop there.

my brother. his wife and their four kids went to the 09 game he said after it was over  a group of georgia fans followed  them to their car and harrassed them one of them cursed in his and wifes face and another through a empty glass beer bottle straight at their five year old daughter authorities  were nearby and broke it all up and told the georgia fans to backoff. but my brother said it was a real rude and scary moment that their five year old daughter cried all the way home and even had nightmares over the incident for a couple of weeks

Yea my top 2 used to be UGA and WVU, but Clemson is up there for me now. Bama fans have moreso been hilarious in my experience, thankfully I haven’t gotten the really obnoxious people in those games

I remember the sack Brodie game and a big woman and her child were behind us, I remember bama got called for something and she turned to her son and went “that’s home cookin son, that’s home cookin.” I have quoted that woman Idk how many times over the years 😂

Not the first time I’ve heard people being followed to their cars and harassed either. It’s honestly embarrassing and scary that people would act that way over football. I’m sure it happens other places but I’ve heard way too much about this happening in athens vs anywhere else.

Yep, I lived there for 15 years. That's what many call it. Personally, I call it something else.

I went with my husband and daughter to a game at UGA when our daughter was about 13.  I sat separately with our UGA cousins and my husband sat in a different section with Laura.  After a quarter or so and we were winning, the cussing started By the GA fans.  My husband said they did not go one minute without hearing the F word for the rest of the game.  🙄

When I was a kid I had a grown man bark in my face in Athens. No lie. Hate that place.

To my post earlier where I mentioned WVU, this gif constantly stays in my head when I think back to that game. I’ve never seen anything like what I saw in the stands that night

Last time I was in Athens, I got a flat tire, got placed in handcuffs and nearly arrested by a fat cop on a bicycle (pretty good story), lost my wallet, later got a got a ticket from said fat cop on a bicycle for not wearing a seatbelt, and finally, on the way out of town didn't fully shut my buddy's back door resulting in his dog getting out and being lost for several hours. Peak college Barnacle. I'm deathly afraid to return.

Edit: forgot to add that I never paid the ticket, and got my license suspended as a result. My father was so proud. Truly, peak Barnacle.

My last trip to Athens was in ‘93 to witness beating down the puppies on our way to 11-0.

I went to the first black out game in Athens. Had no problems. My son was very young and UGA fans treated him kindly. Even gave him a stuffed UGA football. Offered to buy our drinks etc. I thought it was a similar experience to what visiting fans at Auburn must feel like.

Whole family went to game at WV. Those people are beyond rude. Yelling F bombs at us just walking our way to Tiger Walk. Had Alabama fans sit near us that made the WV fans seem polite.

I would never take my family to LSU. I stopped going to games there after 2005 when after the game I found my vehicle vandalized. I once saw an LSU fan get hit with a trash can thrown from the stadium. I don't consider the atmosphere in Baton Rouge safe. I hear the University has made an effort to improve the safety but not worth the hassle to find out.
