Website fora are, in my estimation, not nearly as indicative of the rank-and-file outlook on issues as we on this (or other) social media think.

I've learned a few things about myself and other people during the last six months, and it has been illuminating.

I've been on and off this forum for well over a decade...most of my posting has not been on the political boards because I tend to avoid conflict ("Avoid loud and aggressive persons, for they are a vexation to the spirit" would apply most of the time).

I do think that our politicians have largely forgotten that they work for us, the people, rather than the other way around. My default toward politicians is that "the less power you think you have, the better" and that if there is a choice to be made, the choice involving more personal freedom is preferable...that said, just because one CAN do something doesn't mean one SHOULD do something. It's not simple, never has been and never will be.

Smart conservatives or liberals to me are ones that are not "true believers in their team." I have no use for people that are completely incapable of acknowledging that the "other" side has done positive things...and that their own "team" screws it up a lot. It's team sports mentality run amok, it is counterproductive and it is poisonous.

I know it's confusing in this present political climate because people are so divided into hardened political sects that any deviation from the party line and you get deemed a traitor to the cause, a "RINO/DINO" (Republican/Democrat In Name Only), and so forth.  Not only are you expected to fall in the party line on every issue, you're expected to offer only muted criticism of your tribe and its leaders while pouncing with both feet on anything the other tribe's people do.  And you should offer effusive praise for even the most lightweight of accomplishments of your tribe while ignoring and minimizing the good that the other tribe does.  

Because of these and other unforgivable political sins such as opposing and calling out Trump and Trumpism both here and in our government, I am deemed a liberal or leftie by some.  Most actual liberals would laugh you and me out of the room for believing that if you actually pay attention to my beliefs.  Most people of all political persuasions would have laughed about that 25-30 years ago.  Depending on the issue, I'm often too conservative for my liberal friends and too liberal for my conservative friends.  But such is the state of American politics in 2020.

That said, thanks for the nice things folks here have said.  I don't think I deserve all of it but I appreciate it nonetheless.
