As the first major week of the college football season kicked off Saturday, Auburn was on the field at Jordan-Hare Stadium, as it traditionally is for seven or eight Saturdays every fall. Except this time around, the stadium was empty, the game wasn’t real and the Tigers' opponent was itself as the team completed its third scrimmage of the preseason.

Despite still being two weeks away from its season opener against Kentucky on Sept. 26, Auburn made moves in the first regular-season coaches poll of an unorthodox season. The Tigers jumped into the top-10 of the rankings, checking in at No. 8 in the AP poll and No. 9 of the coaches poll.

Auburn was previously ranked No. 11 in the preseason AP and coaches polls, which included teams from the Big Ten, Pac-12 and WAC -- all of whom had already postponed their fall seasons -- and while the Tigers have yet to play a game, they benefited from those teams (namely: Ohio State, Penn State and Oregon) dropping out of the rankings. Teams whose seasons have been postponed or canceled are not eligible for votes in the regular-season AP poll; only teams with fall schedules in place may receive votes this season.

As a result, Auburn vaulted into the top-10 and the Tigers' season-opener against Kentucky is now a top-25 matchup, as the Wildcats checked in at No. 23 in the AP poll. In all, 10 new teams that were previously unranked in the preseason appeared in the latest AP poll.
