Nick Coe among Auburn’s NFL practice-squad signings

By Mark Inabinett | minabinett@al.com

NFL teams signed eight Auburn alumni for their practice squads on Sunday, including four players who had been released on Saturday.

NFL teams had to reduce their 80-player training-camp rosters to the regular-limit limit of 53 on Saturday.

The former Auburn players joining practice squads on Sunday included:

· Defensive end Nick Coe by the Miami Dolphins

· Safety Javaris Davis by the Miami Dolphins

· Guard Mike Horton by the Carolina Panthers

· Kicker Cody Parkey by the Cleveland Browns

· Punter Arryn Siposs by the Detroit Lions

· Guard Chad Slade (Moody) by the New York Giants

· Offensive tackle Prince Tago Wanogho (Edgewood Academy) by the Philadelphia Eagles

· Wide receiver Duke Williams by the Buffalo Bills

Horton, Siposs, Wanogho and Williams re-signed with the teams that had released them on Saturday, Slade ended up on the Giants’ practice squad on Sunday after surviving the cut to 53 on Saturday and Coe, Davis and Parkey were surprises.

On Sunday, the Giants were awarded offensive tackle Jackson Barton off waivers after he had been released by the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday. To clear a spot on the active roster for Barton, New York released Slade. But to keep him with the team, the Giants re-signed Slade for their practice squad.

Coe went to training camp with New England, but the Patriots released him on Aug. 13. On Sunday, he returned to the NFL by joining the Dolphins’ practice squad.

Davis started training camp as an undrafted rookie with the Detroit Lions. When the Lions waived him, Miami claimed Davis. But the Dolphins released Davis on Aug. 6.

Parkey did not participate in any training camp this year after kicking in three games as an injury fill-in for the Tennessee Titans in 2019. But he wound up on the practice squad in Cleveland, where he kicked in the 2016 season.

CODY PARKEY GETS ANOTHER NFL OPPORTUNITY

Three Auburn alumni released on Saturday did not sign with practice squads on Sunday – defensive end Angelo Blackson, released by the Houston Texans; guard Marquel Harrell, released by the Bills; and defensive tackle Devaroe Lawrence, released by the Kansas City Chiefs.

Not all NFL teams filled their practice squads on Sunday. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the NFL expanded practice squads for this season from 10 players to 16, creating 192 new roster spots for 2020.

With new players needing to complete the NFL’s COVID-19 testing protocol to enter a team facility, let alone practice, most of the players joining practice squads on Sunday re-signed with the team that had just cut them the previous day.

The Sunday practice-squad signings showed a greater demand for kickers, punters and long snappers than practice squads usually carry. By having a kicker on the practice squad, a team would have immediate access to him if its No. 1 kicker got hurt or tested positive for COVID-19.

The NFL also will allow each team to activate two players from its practice squad for each game, then return them to the practice squad after the game without having to put them on waivers.

Players on the practice squad can do everything that the players on the active roster do except play in games.

Players with two or fewer accrued seasons of NFL service make a minimum of $8,400 per week as practice-squad members. For players with more than two years of service, the minimum practice-squad salary in $12,000 per week.

I'm glad to hear that.  I think Coe has NFL talent if he gets a real chance. . Still a bit mystified as to how he ended his Auburn career.
