Alabama has 929 new COVID cases; cases in kids 5-17 grows by 1,000-plus since mid-August

Alabama added 929 coronavirus cases overnight.

The Alabama Department of Public Health’s Aug. 28 10 a.m. figures show 113,723 cases in the state with 2,017 deaths. The death count grew by 27 overnight.

The state has 1,052 current coronavirus hospitalizations.

Cases in age 5-17 breakdown

Current ADPH data shows a total of 8,100 COVID cases since March for children 5-17, an age group that is being closely watched since many have returned to school. That number was 7,000 cases from March to mid-August, growing by 1,100 since Aug. 14. The state does not report data related to how many of those cases were asymptomatic or how many were hospitalized.

Kids ages 5-18 represent 7.09% of all of Alabama’s COVID cases with no deaths reported in that age breakdown. The greatest percentage of the state’s cases – 40% - are among the age group 25-49, though they represent only 5% of the state’s COVID deaths. The greatest percentage of deaths – 77% - is among those age 65 and older.
