Two Auburn defensive backs headed to the Shrine Bowl

Safety Jeremiah Dinson and cornerback Javaris Davis have both accepted invitations to the East-West Shrine Bowl.

The bowl, which takes place on January 18 in St. Petersburg, Florida, is the oldest college football all-star game. It was formerly known as East-West Shrine Game. It provides players the chance to show off before NFL Scouts while also giving back to the community.

Players and coaches visit Shriners Hospitals for Children, which specializes in advanced care for children with orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate. The hospital treats patients regardless of their ability to pay.

Since its creation 95 years ago, 77 former players have been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and about 300 players are in the NFL each season. The bowl aims to select the best 100 players in the nation and considers each player’s NFL potential when making invitations.

Dinson and Davis are the only two from Auburn to accept invites so far. Davis, who finished the season fifth with 41 tackles, accepted Tuesday. Dinson, the team’s tackling leader with 79 in 10 games, accepted Thursday morning. Last year, wide receiver Ryan Davis was the only Tiger to play in the game.

This season, Dinson was the first Tiger to make an interception in a season that featured just seven interceptions. He also had one forced fumble and fumble recovery and two sacks.

Davis was known for his pass coverage, locking down receivers and breaking up six pass attempts. He also had one interception, and he led the cornerback position in tackles.
