As he sat in the crowd at the ESPN College Football Awards show, Derrick Brown was passed over for the Outland Trophy and Bednarik Award but was named to the Walter Camp All-America team.

The first team defensive unit was led by Ohio State’s Chase Young who had 21 tackles for loss and 16.5 sacks. Five other players were named to the All-America defensive interior, including Brown, Bradlee Anae of Utah, James Lynch of Baylor and Curtis Weaver of Boise State.

The 2019 team was the 130th honored by the Walter Camp Football Foundation. It is the oldest All-America team in the nation. Head coaches and sports information directors from all 130 FBS schools select the teams. This year’s teams featured 32 different schools from eight conferences. LSU had the most first-team honorees (3), while Ohio State had the most overall. The Big Ten was the conference with the most overall honorees (15), and the SEC had 13 players listed.

LSU quarterback Joe Burrow won the Walter Camp Player of the Year and led the first team offensive unit. Young led the defense overall, as well as the defensive line.

Brown was the only Auburn player named to the team. Brown made 50 tackles, including 12.5 for loss and four sacks. He also finished the regular season with four pass breakups, two quarterback hurries, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. He led the Auburn defensive line as it held opponents to 115.5 rushing yards per game, ranked 21 in the nation.

Brown was a finalist for the Lott IMPACT Trophy, the Outland Trophy, the Bednarik Award, the Nagurski Trophy, the Pop Warner Award and the Senior Class award. He was a semifinalist for the Wuerffel Trophy and for Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year. Brown was named the AP and Coaches SEC Defensive Player of the year.
