Statistically speaking: Auburn’s defense continues to climb entering Iron Bowl

Posted Nov 24, 2019

16-21 minutes

Auburn’s defense posted its first shutout of the season in Week 13, blanking Samford in a 52-0 win ahead of next weekend’s Iron Bowl to close out the regular season.

It was a statistically dominating performance from Auburn’s defense against a vastly overmatched FCS opponent, but it also boosted the Tigers’ overall (already strong) defensive numbers heading into their rivalry meeting with Alabama on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Auburn already ranked in the top-20 nationally in third-down defense and scoring defense, but it moved into the top-10 in each of those categories after Week 13. Auburn is now 10th nationally in scoring defense (16.2 points per game and eighth in third-down defense (28.9 percent conversion rate; first in the SEC).

The defense also cracked the top-20 nationally in rushing defense (109.6 yards per game; 18th in FBS), pass efficiency defense (112.54 rating; 18th nationally), total defense (306.5 yards per game; 14th nationally) and red-zone defense (73.3 percent; 18th nationally).
