After winning his third SEC honor of the season, Derrick Brown was awarded the Outland Trophy National Player of the Month for his performance in October.

The Outland Trophy goes to the best offensive and defensive interior linemen each month. Georgia’s offensive tackle Andrew Thomas was awarded alongside the Auburn defensive tackle.

Brown, who decided to return to Auburn for his senior year instead of enter the NFL Draft, has 37 tackles for the season. He earned almost half of them in October despite playing just three games.

In both the Mississippi State and Florida games, Brown had five tackles, and he increased the number to seven against then-No. 2 LSU. The National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, who presents the award, said on its website that Brown has “progressively improved.” The 17 tackles in the three-game stretch beats the 13 tackles he had in a five-game September.

Among his 37 tackles Brown also has eight tackles for 42 yards of loss and four sacks. He leads an Auburn defense that has at least five tackles for loss in every game and leads the SEC with 7.1 tackles for loss per SEC game.

Brown has been honored three times by the SEC, including after a loss to Florida. Between him and defensive end Marlon Davidson, Auburn has taken home six of the SEC defensive lineman of the week awards.

With Auburn’s first game of November against Ole Miss, Brown continued to show improvement. He had his second consecutive game with seven tackles. It was the first time in his career he had 14 tackles in two games. He led the team to a win over Ole Miss, even with defensive leaders Davidson and Jeremiah Dinson out.
