Statistically speaking: Auburn’s offense continues to struggle vs. top teams

14-17 minutes

Auburn’s offense was disjointed in the team’s 23-20 loss to LSU on Saturday, as it struggled to sustain drives and largely stalled out on the road.

Auburn totaled just 287 yards of offense, of which 111 came on two long runs by freshman running back D.J. Williams; the team averaged 2.62 yards per play outside of those runs. It was Auburn’s second-worst offensive output of the season, and it continued a troubling trend of offensive inefficiency against top-tier teams this season.

Some of Auburn’s worst offensive performances this year have come in its biggest games: against Oregon in the opener, at Florida and on the road against LSU. Auburn is 1-2 in those games against teams that will enter Week 10 ranked in the top-10 of the AP poll, and Gus Malzahn’s offenses are averaging just 313 yards per game in those contests. The Tigers average 476 yards per game in their other five matchups this season.

Plenty contributed to those troubles against LSU. Bo Nix had another inefficient performance, completing 15-of-35 passes for 157 yards, one touchdown and one interception. The offense committed eight penalties totaling 40 yards, including five false-start calls, and it tied into Auburn’s third-down issues as well. The team converted 5-f-18 third downs, with half of those attempts being in third-and-long (9 yards or more) situations.

Here’s a look at how Auburn stacks up, both in the SEC and nationally, in various statistical categories through Week 9:
