Gus Malzahn was named to the preseason watch list for the Dodd Trophy, which was announced Thursday by the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.

Auburn’s seventh-year coach is one of 23 head coaches from across the country named to the watch list for the award, which is given annually to the nation’s top coach. Among the 23 nominees, five are from the SEC: Malzahn, Alabama’s Nick Saban, Georgia’s Kirby Smart, Texas A&M’s Jimbo Fisher and Florida’s Dan Mullen.

Only the Big Ten, with six coaches on the watch list, has more representatives nominated for the award than the SEC.

This year’s preseason nominees includes six previous winners of the award -- including last year’s winner, Notre Dame’s Brian Kelly -- as well as all seven finalists for last year’s trophy.

A midseason watch list either narrowing or expanding the field will be released in the fall, while a list of finalists will be announced at the conclusion of the season. The winner of the 2019 Dodd Trophy will be announced in Atlanta during the run-up to this season’s Peach Bowl.
