Auburn running back Kamryn Pettway carries during a win at Mississippi State on Saturday, Oct., 8, 2016 in Starkville, Miss.

HOOVER — Kamryn Pettway is a tough man to tackle. Even his teammates know that.

Last week, Auburn football released a video on its Twitter account highlighting the particular strengths of its 6-foot, 235-pound lead running back. Safety Tray Matthews referred to him as a “truck coming in the lanes” and a “big train moving to the outside.” Kerryon Johnson described his backfield mate as a “pounder” who “damages defenses.”

Cornerback Carlton Davis perhaps put it best:

"You don't want to see him in the hole," he said. "It's a scary sight just to see him and you one on one. That's something to deal with."

Dez Harris can attest. Mississippi State’s rising senior linebacker saw it firsthand in Starkville, Miss., last season. Pettway finished his sophomore year with 1,224 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on 209 carries. The Oct. 8 game against the Bulldogs might have been his breakout performance.

Coming into that game, Pettway had 52 carries, 336 yards and one touchdown on his career stat line. After a first-quarter ankle injury sidelined Johnson, the bruiser rushed 39 times for 169 yards and three touchdowns in a 38-14 rout.

Harris had three tackles, two of which were of Pettway.

“You know Auburn has always got a pretty good, pretty decent running game. His running style, he’s a big, powerful guy,” Harris said at SEC Media Days on Tuesday. “It’s always going to come down to making tackles. And whether you’re tackling a big guy or a small guy, it’s hard to do in the SEC. So we just have to focus up and be ready to do that task when it presents itself.”

That’s easier said than done, though.

"He's a big guy, and he's fast,” Auburn linebacker Tre’ Williams said. “If you're scared to tackle him, he's just going to run by you. If you think you're big and bad and going to tackle him, he'll run you over."

Love Pettway. We need him to get faster . I would love to see him play a little lighter than 235..Also put the cowboy collar back on . It looks awesome

He was our best player last year and may well be the best this year.Hope he can stay healthy, when he was injured last season that is when our season went down hill fast. Can't wait to see the big man run some people over.

Teams got lucky last season...It's clear. Now that Kam is healthy, and hopefully will be all year, he will a force to be reckoned with especially with the passing attack. I have all the confidence in the world that he will annihilate teams all throughout the year now that he's a full time starter for the whole season. It's a wrap.

Really interested to see how he fits with the new offense. I hope CL is smart enough to use a lot of the power running game in the new offense. Not sure how much he has used it in the past but when you have a FB like Cox and a RB like Pettway it would be really sad to not use that combo to impose our will on opposing defenses.

I think he will stay healthy. Since we will have a QB that defenses will have to respect, they won't be able to load up the box like they did last year. It's a lot easier dealing with 4 in the box than 8

How is he along the lines of pass receiving? Would love to see him as a threat out of the backfield.

KJ is the better receiving threat out if the backfield. If Chip truly runs HIS offense, we will see both Bubba and KJon the field at the same time and KJ will be a real threat to catch it out of the backfield.
