Best Special Teams Player Ever

Recommended Posts

This is something someone brought up a week or so ago and I thought it was worthy of starting a topic.

Daniel Carlson may be a current player, but he may very well be the best FG Kicker I've ever seen on any CFB team!

Wes Byrum and Al Del Greco made some pretty clutch kicks for us in their days.

IMHO, Alexander Wright was our best returner ever. Chris Davis had the most memorable return in AU history, possibly the most memorable play in CFB history.

Steven Clark could pin a team deep in their own territory as well as anyone.

But my pick is.......

Terry Daniel!!!  That guy could kick a ball into orbit!  Only punter I know who was so good he was accused of cheating!  Lol ($1 to Jackie Sherrill)

#offseason

Auburn's best:

Returner- Tre Mason (weak category, but he was good for a big return when we needed one)

Punter- Greg Gantt (hint- not a Tiger)

Kicker- Wes Byrum. mainly for his kick(s) vs Florida and to win the Natty

One of my fav's was always Craig Sanders,he was great on kickoff coverage.

Always the first name that comes to mind for me. Did he actually contribute to Auburn winning football games as much as some other guys? I don't know. Do I remember any ST players before the early 90s? Nope. But that dude was so animated and fun to watch. And for a bigger guy, he sure seemed to be the first guy or one of the first to the returner a lot.

A lot of folks forget that the first time he ever touched a football in a college game, it was a house call on a kickoff. And I remain convinced that he was 1 block away from winning us another BCSCG on that last play.

Auburn has a long and very rich history in the specialist categories.  Snappers, kickers, punters, returners.  You can name multiple all stars from any of those groups. But I agree with the sentiment above about Craig Sanders and if you add him you also have to include Ryan White. Seemed every punt or kick return it was either 13 or 19 making the tackle with the other in tow to finish it up.

James Brooks was an excellent kick returner.

And now he's on the staff!  Hoping he will instill some of his heart into our special teams guys.

Great call on Craig Sanders guys!!!!  Definitely the best in kick coverage ever!  I remember following #13 from the moment the ball was kicked because everyone knew he was gonna make he play.

Speaking of kick coverage, one of the hardest hits I have ever seen was delivered by Brandon Jacobs on kickoff coverage.  Against Vanderbilt maybe?

Punter: definitely Terry Daniel.  The opposing coach had the ball confiscated for testing!   That was greatness!!!

Craig Sanders was a head hunter (in a good way).

Returner:  I loved watching A Wright get moving.  2nd fastest ever at Auburn, I think.  Nobody can overtake the legendary return of Chris Davis.  College Football history books right there.

FG kicker - who was the guy who kicked it twice like 50 yards as time expired.  And then gave the gator chomp to Spurrier and the florida team?

Kicker: D Carlson - mister automatic.

Pretty sure that was Byrum in his freshman year, but Spurrier wasn't Florida's coach at the time.

As far as place kickers go I know he didn't have the numbers as others listed but I like Gardner Jett. As I remember he was pretty accurate which included a field goal and two EP's in the "Punta Bama Punta IB in 72.

I still remember Gary Sanders call, "Gardner Jett on to attempt the biggest extra point of his career. Snap, kick, goodddddd. With timeout on the field the score is Auburn 17, Alabama 16.

Assists to Beck for handling bad snaps......

You're right.  It was Urban "I need to retire due to a heart condition," "no wait, I can leave the SEC and get a plum job, " Myers.  The kick so nice, he did it twice.

Danny Skutak was a helluva wedge buster in the early 80's.  He would basically sacrifice his body in order to take out 2-3 players.  Never saw him get hurt either, but maybe my memory had faded.  One year he entered A-Club boxing in the Super Heavyweight division and he had such a reputation as a maniac that no one else entered to fight him.

One of those poor Vandy kids got carted off, I believe.

Yes, I think it was Vandy.  BJ was our wedge buster.  He straight blew up the poor kid who was the point man on their wedge. It sounded like a car wreck and the way he dropped I was very concerned for the kid.
