One of the few really good players to come out of Sheffield, Al. I was the game and can still hear the lick

Dennis Collier has already been mentioned.  Byron Franklin was pretty good as well and as a bonus brought Buffalo chicken wings to the Supper Club!  Kelsey Finch played for UT and still holds the record for the longest run from scrimmage.

Lots of Sheffield kids end up transferring to Muscle Shoals much like Carlo and Dee Liner.

Carlos Cheatam. Probably made the nastiest tackle I've ever witnessed. I believe the running back was Reggie Cobb of Tennessee. Per today's rules he would have been locked up in prison for that hit...:-)

Was at that game, happened right in front of me in that end zone as a student. Of course, Reggie got his revenge in Knoxville:-\

But, but Walter McFadden has a-wait for it- Wikipedia page so he must not be obscure because we all know Wikipedia is the end all be all. Thanks man!

I don't know if he could be considered obscure, but I was always a huge fan of Buddy McClintock. I think he still holds the AU career record for interceptions with 18.He wasn't big, he wasn't strong and he wasn't all that fast, but McClintock knew how to play the game

Look at you emotional. It will be okay Dawson. It will be okay. Rosegreen is my choice.

Also back to obscurity: Brandon Johnson; the fullback that was one of the main reasons Ronnie and Caddy were so successful

I was thinking of him. Great fullback and a pretty good linebacker as well. Wasnt he in the Falcons organization for a little while?

Strolling down memory lane (and showing my age).....Freddy Weygand. Dude was smooth and could really catch the ball, just didn't throw much under Dye. After we played FSU in '84 one of their dbs said "....that's a fast white guy....", lol

I've already mentioned that I think the '84 team might be one of the most obscure (but really good) teams in "recent" AU history and to my point, the WR corp was actually a VERY good one made up of 3 WR's that have all already been mentioned in this thread.

Freddy Weygand & Trey Gainous made huge plays throughout the year (with Scott Bolton as the reverse specialist) and I'll add Clayton Beauford (I think a former QB), who was actually AU's 2nd leading receiver that year.

Most of these guys are not obscure...Rosegreen, Weyland, etc.  Anybody that was a 4 star or above recruit, or made some sort of all conference team in any capacity is not obscure.  QBs are probably not obscure (otherwise I'd pick Jeff Klein). My favorite obscure football player is probably Kevin Hobbs.  He was a transfer walk-on who provided much needed depth, and started a few games, at cornerback.  After it was evident Montae Pitts could not live up to his billing, Hobbs kind of held the fort down in 2004 on the opposite side of Carlos Rogers.  He quietly spent a few years in the NFL on practice squads.

I vaguely remember that he got picked up by them as an undrafted FA. He was a beast for us.

Hobbs can't be obscure either.  Because I've heard of him.

Hobbs stole Rashaud Walker's job, right? I remember expecting Walker to have a big senior season but Hobbs came in and took all the snaps Walker was supposed to get. IIRC

Seems like Rashaud Walker might have been before Kevin Hobbs' time.... Maybe you have a great obscure name in Rashaud?  I think he might have even gotten his start in the Terry Bowden days....

I do seem to remember Kevin Hobbs name being brought up a lot by Tuberville as a hard worker and earning a lot of playing time that he otherwise may not have received normally though...

Unfortunately, he has a Wikipedia page too...so that might disqualify him according to some of our illustrious Obscurity Rules Committee... ;)

I definitely could be wrong. Memory isn't particularly my strong suit lol. Wikipedia is killing this thread!!! ;D

Yeah, Wikipedia is "Tha' Debil" in this thread.

Oh well.  I enjoy "memory lane" threads so I don't care, personally, about the technicalities of it all.

I'm sure we could all figure out the name of the 1954 offensive guard and call him "obscure" all day long...

Reid Tankersley...a great Auburn guy, no wiki.  Has a LinkedIn page, though.

Hobbs took playing time from Montae Pitts...the 5 star from Loachapoka who left to pursue a rapping career.

I have no idea how his rapping career has gone but it may have been better to stick to football. Hopefully he was able to get his degree though.

You know.... if his message board legend hadn't taken off, Wade Christopher would be as obscure as they come...

OR, the other way you can put it.

Wade Christopher is obscure....... 'Cuz he says so.
