Well there are reports Sumlin is in danger of being terminated, Should Auburn go after A&M DC Chavis if these reports are true.

If true .... YES on Chavis.

IF we had a chance to get Chavis then definitely go after him. He is a guy that will stick around if you keep him happy. Consistency like we need. LSU balked on his requests and he walked. He has been successful in SEC everywhere he has been. Plus it would mean we would not have to face his defense on Saturdays and facing it every other day should help the offense. Absolute home run hire if it went through.

I would not be opposed to him at all. Some of the other names being thrown around... meh.

Yep but for better or worse, I still have a feeling that something has already been decided and it's just not the right time to announce it.

This is exactly what I have been saying for days. I think the deal is done and we will know on or before Jan 1.

Maybe as soon as Monday night, after USF plays in their bowl game ....

Great ...that's two of us now.....so let's see how long it takes the rest of the crowd to see the obvious..... :)

That may be the case but it could be that he actually doesn't have someone lined up yet. I never knew a secret that could be kept for this long, especially in this day and age.

Doesn't Scott Fountain coach TE plus special teams? So, since special teams were arguably the best area of our team this year, he deserves to be fired, do I have that right?

Rocker's D-line at UGA has been no better than Garner's at AU. I don't see the need to swap.

I think Garner's D-line has done better than people want to believe. Yes, we could have had a better pass rush but that should come sooner rather than later, maybe this coming season. The rushing defense stats cannot be used against the D-line. Their job is to tie up blockers and funnel ballcarriers into gaps that are supposed to be filled by linebackers. For the past few years our safeties have been the leading tacklers. 'Nuff said on that subject.

The fg kicker was pretty good but special teams is made up of more than that and no other part of it was good.

The funnel ball carriers so stats doesn't show for them thing is literally the funniest thing I've ever heard in my life. I'd love to know who was the originator to the this idea on the forum that some of you picked up and ran with it.

But even if you wanted to marginalize the funnel a ball carrier thing we didn't set edges on the d line that well either.

Yes on some particular plays you hold your gap and that's your first priority but you still expect your d line to shed blocks and make tackles.

Lastly let's say a guy just stand there on d line and doesn't move a muscle, a safety or linebacker still will end up making the tackle....saying a safety made a tackle doesn't in the slightest show that a d line did a good job.

Missouri's DL coach is still available I believe. If so, yes please! Move Garner to TE coach, hire Lance Thompson as DC and add coach Kuligowski as DL coach.

This would be a pretty good solution to a problem right now.

wde

Coach Garner has almost single handedly held this defensive recruiting class together and bolstered it with several recent commits. We need to keep him on the staff.

Agreed. That's why I would propose for Garner to either move to tight ends coach or recruiting coordinator and bring in Missouri's old DL coach. That's a dream situation though so...

Garner is already the Recruiting Coordinator.

And we have a solid TE coach who is also a good recruiter and Special Teams coach.

WDE!

If you're trying to imply that we don't have room for the nation's best D line coach, stop. I don't know how you can claim we already have a solid tight end coach either when we never utilized our tight ends last year. I'd be perfectly fine with Garner taking over the tight ends. For me, it's a win win win situation because we could keep RG and his recruiting prowess, RG can keep an on the field coaching job which is what he wants, and we can get a better DL coach.

I'm not implying that at all. We have two openings on the defensive side.

I don't use last season as a gauge for anything this offense is supposed to do. In addition to being an great recruiter, Scott Fountain is a good TE coach, when he's got the horses. He's also a good H-back coach, and he has two good ones on the rise. He's also a good ST coach. Clark was a Ray Guy semi-finalist, Carlson is a Groza finalist, and probably the biggest, most memorable play in Auburn history was a Special Teams play. I don't know if he made that call or not, but I give him credit for his unit executing that play. The rest of his AU bio is pretty impressive as well.

Also consider CRG hasn't coached TEs in twenty years and it wasn't for this style of offense. If we're going to hide him somewhere, let's hide him somewhere else.

WDE!

Jeff, I completely agree with your post. When Coach Fountain was hired, I was not impresses, but time has proven him to be one of the stronger members of the staff.

Instead of trying to force a squar peg into a round hole, let's do something novel like getting the right size and shape for each position.

I don't put shredding blocks on the Dline coach more on the desire and strength of the player. For instance Carl is a force because he has speed and strength, yes, but also because he has passion and desire. Another thing is purely the lack of depth throughout the D. We neec 2nd teamers pushing 1st teamers for positions as competition makes everyone so much better

It's a technique to shedding blocks just as there is to blocking, route running, tackling, even your stance to starting a route. All these can't take place without desire but there are still people who coach it better than others. Pass rushing is nothing more than getting to the qb, shedding your block, people say they wouldn't mind having mizzou coach because his players do that. Is it he's just lucky at picking guys who just want to and we're picking guys who don't?

No, there's clearly a technique (or several), and some people are better teachers than others.

I remember pelton not wanting our guys to use a swim move technique, dumbest thing I've ever heard but it is what it is I guess. Lawson mentions how he studies other guys and take things from them and use them. He's mostly talking pass rushing techniques. I notice he uses a variation of the club technique himself

I wish they were all as much of a student of the game and as hard a worker as Lawson!

I'd really love to see our DTs shedding blocks and making tackles with more regularity.

There is a technique and everyone teaches it virtually the same. Coaching is not rocket science at all ( play calling on the other hand is a science). I think you guys underestimate the lack of depth and competition and what that does. Lack of depth is on the coaches from a recruiting standpoint but the constant changes in staff has not helped. Someone mentioned Gabe, he needed to be pushed by his peers so much but there was no one pushing them whereas Rocker gets credit for Nick was just freakishly quick and strong so he could dominate. Coaches can only do so much. Look at the NFL, a lot of the first rounders that don't make it not because of lack of talent but their commitment.

The problem with swim moves are that if you are up against a good OL, as soon as you raise your arm to reach over they will get under your armpit and take you where they want. That is one reason most DL coaches teach their players to rip through.

Nick is the prime example of needing to be pushed. You can go back to the LSU game of 2010 and you can see rocker tear him a new one after he was celebrating after his first sack....Nobody teaches a technique the same, nobody teaches the same technique as I previously mentioned how pelton apparently didn't teach swim move techniques. Spent most of my life in competitive sports I know what coaching can do. I also know the preparation before a game is ever played is where games are won and lost. It's not a coincidence that mizzou has been pumping out high production from their d ends no matter if the guy is a 3 star or a 5 star. That line coach knows what he is doing.

It's definitely something not everybody can do but if you're gifted enough to where you can do it it's very hard to stop. This can also be said of a spin move, I've seen coaches almost kill some kids for trying that losing their line of sight then lose containment, whereas other guys are so quick that it literally can't be stopped. That's what make coaches so important tailoring people strengths and weaknesses to making it effective on the field.

Lastly let's say a guy just stand there on d line and doesn't move a muscle, a safety or linebacker still will end up making the tackle....saying a safety made a tackle doesn't in the slightest show that a d line did a good job.

It's a technique to shedding blocks just as their is to blocking, route running, tackling, even your stance to starting a route.

Great Points! I get so sick of fans saying we are horrible at a certain position because a professional coach does not know how to coach the proper technique for he position he is paid to $300k+ to coach. What makes this more astounding is that obviously what this coach does poorly is something so simple that guys and their buddies who sit around watching games and drinking beer with their buddies on Saturday can all immediately see he is coaching it wrong.

The puzzling thing about this is, if that if it is so obvious to these amateur fans on TV, would it not also be obvious to the Head Coach and the DC in spring practice? The position coaches do not work in a vacuum, they all practice together. If coach is doing it wrong, why would the DC/HC let him do it wrong for a whole year? Why would they not assign someone to help him or show him the right way? I mean if it is something so obvious a fan knows how it should be done, how hard can it be to show a coach how to do it right?

Fans just have a really hard time admitting that often it is not coaching, it is a matter of talent, depth, ability, and commitment.

The problem with swim moves are that if you are up against a good OL, as soon as you raise your arm to reach over they will get under your armpit and take you where they want. That is one reason most DL coaches teach their players to rip through.

Bird, always the coach.

I am waiting for Saban to retire and we hire him as our DC! I better watch out in that if Marshall reads my post, SABAN will be on Marshall's list of candidates for the DC!

You're right, Cole. There will always be a few that the rules really don't work for. When you have those, sit back and enjoy.
