Looking forward to hearing from the coaches about the scrimmage and players that are stepping up. That has been one of the bright spots for me with this coaching staff. They have been revealing some good insight on the players development.

Scrimmage observations...

Linebacker JaViere Mitchell in pads today. Didn't see enough of practice to know how limited he will be. He's been out with a concussion.

...

Other injured players in pads: Tre Mason, Corey Grant, Angelo Blackson, Nosa Eguae, Avery Young, to name a few.

...

During live punt return drills, the three returners were Trovon Reed, Quan Bray and Jonathon Mincy. In that order Saturday.

...

Patrick Miller got an education from coach J.B. Grimes on footwork – the difference between having feet parallel staggered for support.

...

Offensive and defensive linemen got to know each other real well. One-on-one blocking drills again today. Pretty intense. Video coming soon.

...

Interesting to see Kodi Burns help teach some special teams. As a coach, Burns looks like he's in his natural element.

...

Defensive linemen focused on hand-to-hand combat today. Nosa Eguae vs. Dee Ford, Angelo Blackson vs. Gabe Wright were best battles.

...

During live punt return drills, Quan Bray botched a punt. Bray had issues with that last year, most notably against LSU.

...

Defensive end Keymiya Harrell was at practice today, but he was on crutches.

Post-Scrimmage...

Gus Malzahn said it was an 86-play scrimmage, different situations, mix and matching different personnel: "We're learning more every time out."

...

Malzahn also said the scrimmage was set up to be almost 50-50 run-pass so that he could evaluate both aspects.

...

Malzahn said RB Corey Grant made some good runs today: "I think he's had some success, which is good to see."

...

More Malzahn compliments: "Our punter and our kicker coming back they're really standing out. We expect those guys to do that."

...

Malzahn said Corey Grant can "flat-out run": "Anytime you've got a guy that can run, you can do some different things with, get out in space."

...

JaViere Mitchell did not participate in scrimmage.

...

Malzahn said physical practice is by design: "It's a little bit of both. That's who we're going to be. That's who Auburn is."

...

Malzahn said Auburn will not practice Monday, but will make up that practice and another one after A-Day scrimmage.

...

From all accounts, RB Corey Grant starred in today's scrimmage. He had two long touchdown runs, untouched on both. His speed's a big factor.

...

Ken Carter said he played some defensive end in high school. He's switched there from DT this spring. He said he brings power to the edge.

...

Kiehl Frazier and Jonathan Wallace had a TD pass apiece, but there were some interceptions too. Jaylon Denson and Brandon Fulse caught TDs.

...

Jonathan Wallace said CB Jonathan Jones stood out today with some big hits. Couple players were again impressed with Justin Garrett.

...

CG on Garrett: "You run the ball, and he may be on other side of the field. By the time you're getting tackled, he's the one tackling you."

I was at the light by the stadium coming back from Walmart yesterday after the scrimmage and coach DC and his family were less than a foot from my car and coach Harbison came flying by on the golf cart yelling at DC lol :P

Got to be on the field and watch the scrimmage Saturday. A few observations that I had. Defense still has a LONG way to go, they still had trouble tackling and the linebackers took poor angles to the ball. There were a few big hits by some DBs. TJ Davis (i think) had a big one that turned heads. Garrett was impressive in the way he ran to the football and was physicall when he got to the ball. Defensive line made some big plays behind the line a few time and Whitaker stuffed the run pretty good. Hes really good at holding the point on double teams. Overall the only thing really impressive about the Defense was the way the huslted to the ball. There was definately a lot of effort and the guys played hard. On the offensive side of the ball the Quarterbacks looked good at times and awful at others. Sammie Coates dropped a wide open pass. Reed and Bray looked really fast and ellusive, if they get the ball in space they can make plays. Corey Grant looked really fast and on his 2nd TD, it was about 70 yds, nobody was within 10 yds of him by the time he was in the endzone. Melvin Ray is an impressive looking athlete but sprained his ankle late in the scrimmage.

Considering the emphasis that has been placed on tackling and fundamentals, it's somewhat discouraging to hear that.

For four years there has been zero emphasis on the correct tackling fundamentals. I'm sure it's gonna take a LOT longer than a couple of weeks to fix.

Change doesn't happen overnight.

Longer than that. Muschamp's MO was making up for zero emphasis on fundamentals by successfully stoking the D w/ emotion for 4 quarters.

Thanks for the coverage RIR, can we call those long-distance stadium shots Belichick-cam? :big:

I must say, those are the tiniest arms on any post-high school O line I've ever seen. Beating a dead horse: sure wish Zeke Pike hadn't been such a head case and was still in the QB mix.

I don't know Zeke. He may have been a head case as you say. Had CGM stayed I do believe ZP would have toed the line better and still been in the mix for our QB job. Gus wanted Zeke. CGC's remaining coaches did not (along with most on this forum). Things usually have a way of working out for the best. AU will be fine and Zeke will be fine.

@ aucanucktiger, GoBulls, vt_johnp

I know guys, I know. I thought it was so obvious that it would take time, that it really didn't need mentioning. It doesnt mean that it still isnt "somewhat" (key word) disappointing. Anyway, I hope it is solved by the end of Fall camp, but we will get there even if it takes a year. One thing I do know is we now have the coaches on staff to get it done.
