RB Tre Mason remains limited at practice with undisclosed injury. Appeared to be favoring left leg.

...

Trovon Reed was back and fielding punts

...

First team offensive line remains same: Greg Robinson, Alex Kozan, Reese Dismukes, Chad Slade, Patrick Miller

...

Kick returns: Josh Holsey, Corey Grant, Ricardo Louis. Punt returns: Chris Davis, Quan Bray, Reed, Robenson Therezie

...

Jonathan Mincy also was fielding punts again

...

QBs rotating again, CAP was working on screens out of backfield

...

Defense was working on fake punts. Chris Davis and Demetruce McNeal served as deep safeties/returners.

@AUAuthority

A lot of fake field goals/extra points today. Ryan White threw a couple times on kicks and Cody Parkey ran/threw as well.

@bmarcello

Tre Mason in uniform and pads, but not practicing.

...

No sign of Angelo Blackson

...

Some extensive work today at Auburn's 8th practice on fake FGs/fake punts. Ryan White, Cody Parkey & Steven Clark learning to throw passes.

...

Understandably, Auburn's not allowing video from those drills. Still, interesting to see the squad working on 'em in mid-April.

@wareagleextra

Robenson Therezie has moved from cornerback to the Star position. Javiere Mitchell, out with an injury, has moved back to linebacker.

@PMARSHONAU

Skill players working with first team: QBs Kiehl Frazier/Jonathan Wallace; RBs CAP/Corey Grant; WRs Reed/Denson/Bray/Louis; TEs Fulse/Uzomah

...

Gus Malzahn watches his offense Wednesday morning during practice.

Celebrity observers included former quarterback Stan White and former Auburn offensive coordinator -- and former Arkansas and Jacksonville State head coach -- Jack Crowe.

Cam Newton wasn't on the field, but was in the athletic building in the early hours.

...The players seemed a tad rusty from the relatively lengthy layoff.

And it didn’t seem like the coaches got on their case … at least not that we saw.

...

‘Twas a much quieter sideline than last weekend with the coaching clinic, but athletic director Jay Jacobs was observing in a bright blue athletic polo.

Kind of wish we would keep stuff like this to ourselves. Came from an Auburn beat writer to boot.

Pretty much everyone who was at practice tweeted about this. Also note, this portion was not allowed to be filmed.

Malzahn post-practice...

Gus Malzahn: "This was probably the first time that I wasn't pleased overall with attitude, effort, our approach to practice."
...
Malzahn said practice was "sluggish": "I don't think it had anything to do w/ the break. If anything we shoulda been a little more fresher.
...
Malzahn said move of Robenson Therezie to the Star position was made because he wants to get his athletes on the field.
...
Malzahn said three JuCo transfers (CAP, Danzey, Bradley) are getting more comfortable every day.
...
Malzahn on RB Cameron Artis-Payne: "He's a hard worker, and he's a tough guy."
...
Malzahn on Tre Mason injury: "Nothing serious, put it that way. At the same time, a little banged up. There's no doubt."
...
Malzahn said experienced players have processed info, played faster in live periods. Didn't name anyone who has stood out.

Players post-practice...

H-back Jay Prosch on spring progress: "I feel like we're making our way, but definitely it's always tough learning a new system."

...

Prosch said footwork/playing with different leverage are big changes at H-back compared to FB, but he's enjoyed the position change.

...

Prosch on standout guys: "I know that Justin Garrett is having a great spring. I think he's really stepped up."

...

Others Prosch mentioned include Jaylon Denson, Sammie Coates, Dee Ford, Reese Dismukes, Ricky Parks and both QBs.

...

Melvin Ray on low numbers at WR: "It's an opportunity that each guy at my position has taken advantage of."

...

Ray is getting back into shape after playing baseball:: "I feel a whole lot better now than even I did playing football back in my HS days."

...

Ray said he missed football from "day one" when he started down baseball path.

...

Ray lining up around field: "I think he's doing that b/c we're going to need guys to play in multiple spots. It's only an advantage for us."

...

Ray said Dodgers paying his way right now, could change: "I'm working my way to having a good spring in coach Malzahn's eyes."

...

Ray called Trovon Reed a "vocal leader" in the receiver room, says experience has helped Reed grasp new offense.

...

Ray signed with LA Dodgers out of HS. He said part of his contract stated the Dodgers would pay for college if he returned.

...

Safety Trent Fisher on playing with first team: "It feels good any time hard work starts to pay off and you can see it on the field."

...

Fisher: "Last year was great to get to play a little defense. ... I'm hoping to get more and more snaps on defense this year."

...

Fisher says safeties are bulking up: "We were pretty thin back there, but everyone else is getting stronger."

...

Fisher on the difference having the Star hybrid player on defense: "Not much, we've just got to communicate."

...

Fisher said S doesn't switch sides: "You play Texas A&M and you're trying to think and process the call ... and they're running at you."

...

Fisher said he's at 205 pounds right now.

@AUBlog

Melvin Ray's focus on academics, more than pros. "Thinking realistically, I have to put myself in position to get a job first." Mature kid.

Unhappy Gus...

"You always start with your seniors from a coaching standpoint. It’s good to go through some of these ups and downs and tough days. As a coach, you see how your guys respond. So I’m looking forward to that."

I have a feeling we won't be hearing that blanket "we had a good practice" statement from Gus that we heard so much the last 4 years. At least, not until we actually win some games on the field.

I am happy that Gus and Ellis Johnson are telling it like it is.

He probably reads this board and knows we prefer to hear practice stunk.

I find it quite comforting. I was begining to think that "good practice" was french for "we're going to get our a$$ kicked".
