Kiehl Frazier and Quan Bray run a read option in practice

@JamesCrepea

The Tigers are already working on the hurry-up, no-huddle, gone-in-sixty-seconds formations. The entire offensive unit was huddle near the sideline, then race to the ball – spotted at the 40-yard-line. They simulated four handoff plays with no switching personnel, capped by coaches yelling ‘Score! Score!’ and all eleven players mock-celebrating in the end zone. The entire exchange was followed by some up-downs on the sideline. Fast, fast, fast.

...

Words heard multiple times Wednesday morning: Go. Hurry. Run. Move. These are going to be some caffeinated, cock-a-doodle-doo workouts.

Kiehl Frazier and Corey Grant were working with the first team offense.

...

On the defensive side of the ball, the startling defensive unit looked to be Nosa Eguae, Dee Ford, Gabe Wright, Angelo Blackson, Jake Holland, Cassanova McKinzy, Justin Garrett, Jonathon Mincy, Chris Davis, Jermaine Whitehead and Demetruce McNeal. Garrett was lined up as the “star” linebacker with the first team but there were a lot of rotations so it’s way too early to tell.

LaDarius Owens, who signed as a linebacker and practiced at defensive line last season, is back at linebacker.

Interesting that Owens is back at LB right now. I was wondering if he would get looked at there. It sounds like there isn't a lot of pass protection responsibility for the MLBs so this may have made it possible for Owens to move there. Not surprised Garret is at the star position. I think we can pretty much count on anyone under about 220 to not play LB anymore.

Also, seems that Bray is getting a look at RB. Wonder if that is just for the spring since we are low on numbers or if it will stick through the fall when the freshmen arrive?

I used to be able to walk to the kitchen and grab a beer between plays. Pretty sure those days are gone.

I'm totally ok with having to stock myself with a few at the beginning of a drive.

I'll make any adjustment necessary if it means I actually get to see us score from time to time.

Post-Practice Notes ...

Gus Malzahn says they didn't practice "fast enough" today. "It wasn't even close."

...

Malzahn ready to move forward from '12: "When I first got the job it was evident some players had mental scars." He repeats "new day" mantra

...

Malzahn on WR Quan Bray at QB: "He's got a good understanding of the offense, so we can do that with him."

@bmarcello

Malzahn: "It's great to be back on the practice field with the team and our new coaches out there. Lot of excitement. Lot of flying around."

...

Malzahn on players understanding uptempo style: "Even the guys who have been through it, it takes a while to train your mind and your body."

...

Malzahn on G Jordan Diamond: "He's a big guy, and he's an athletic guy. Once we get in pads we'll know a lot more about" O line and D line.

...

Malzahn on Quan Bray doing some Wildcat: "He's got the ability to do that. He's very flexible to play a lot of different positions."

...

Malzahn: "It is about learning how to line up correctly, process information quickly, body language and hustling. It's all that combined."

@AUBlog

Malzahn: "We didn't play fast enough today. We really weren't even close, but we'll get there."

...

Malzahn: "Judging them from the first day, we've got a ways to go on learning how to practice"

...

Malzahn: "There's really no such thing as a first-unit or second-unit right now."

@JoelAEricksonAU

Malzahn says LaDarius Owens' move to linebacker was … Owens' idea.

@JayGTate

Malzahn on team attitude: "We have gotten stronger, little mentally tougher since we first got here. Our goal each day is to get better."

@JHokanson

Malzahn says Kiehl Frazier has actually lost weight since he got here. Is listed at 234

...

Malzahn says JaViere Mitchell and Justin Garrett were at "star' emphasizes no "first units" yet

@JamesCrapea

Malzahn says he took "big picture" view of practice and only watched QBs about a period and a half.

@jzenor

Collectively, the quarterbacks were "throwing the ball decent" at Auburn's first spring practice.

...

Team will practice in shorts Friday, pads on Saturday

...

Malzahn on first practice: "our main goal right now is to learn how to practice."

@TheAUPlainsman

Malzahn says Auburn can have 8 practices where they can tackle. Three will be in shorts.

...

"This spring's going to be about us. We're going to be very basic. It's about the basics of our offense and defense and the little things."

My Notes from video:

2nd string center was snapping high (fariyike? – he did high snaps last year – but it kinda looked like no. 63 which I think is kozan)

The first group “looked” more composed/faster than the second

Fulse looked lost/slow on the outside (I know it is the first day)

Practice looks fun.

That is crrrrrraaaazy fast work

If our guys are not in good cardio shape by the end of the fall, then there is no hope for the concept of getting in good cardio shape.

Imo - Grimes will have a tough time keeping hard nose physical attitude on every snap when there is such an uber focus on playing speed. (guess that is the point of this exercise)

Very good point on the OL. That's a unit that almost has to develop outside of the general framework. They've got to be nasty when everyone else is focused on pace pace pace. If you get the right attitude though, it can happen. The 2010 line had an edge. A&M's line last year had an edge.

Not to take a shot at the previous staff, but I really like the way Gus is straight forward about things. No "good practice" today. He sees a problem, says its a problem, and figures out a way to fix it. Not saying anything about how many wins that creates, I just think the change in mentality is good for the program as a whole.

Not trying to take a shot either, but you mean Gus didn't say: "it was a good practice"

I just bring my cooler into the living room. On the other hand, bathroom breaks are the devil. Unless I learn to use the window...hmmm....

I'm more concerned about needing to void the beer I drank earlier. :rolleyes:

Ok, I know this is the first day of practice, but my first impression of the photos and videos is that our guys are still small. The arms of our DT's and OT's look small. I know we have a long way to go to break the patterns from the last 2 years, but I really hope our guys get big FAST!!!
