Does anybody know the reasoning behind the "freeze" on the offsides?

The center has been coached to quickly snap the ball if he sees someone offsides.  Because he's not snapping the ball based on the cadence of the QB, the rest of the lineman stay in place.  It's a matter of being consistent that the lineman move based on the cadence from the QB and not from movement of the defensive lineman.  This prevents false starts and makes it more obvious to the refs that someone was offsides.

works really well except for the free shot on the QB!

I like the theory, but it gives the D a free run at the QB.  Trotter has taken some hard hits on those plays.
