DL Coach Discussion

If coach Chizik hired Garner tomorrow, I would overlook his past and welcome him back home with open arms. If Rodney is such a dirty recruiter, then why hasn't UT or Ga ever been slapped on probation. Oh yeah, Lance Thompson would also be a good hire.

Can't say I disagree...might not exactly "welcome him back with open arms", but close enough.

However, I'd be very surprised to see that happen, because I think we'll get someone better. JMO.

I've been told that the bammers are scared to death that we might hire Lance Thompson, Rodney Garner or Terrell Williams.

We just conquered the last thing standing in the way of completely obliterating the illusion that Alabama football is superior to Auburn football. Players are looking at us in an entirely different light now. In the 13 years of the BCS, an SEC team has gone undefeated four times. Auburn has two of those seasons. In the last decade, Auburn is 7-3 vs. Alabama, and 2-2 against Saban's Tide. Previously 5-19 coach Gene Chizik has marched in lockstep with Saban, matching him recruit for recruit and signing arguably the most balanced and need-fulfilling class in the country each of the past two seasons. And papers with incredible proof of illegal benefits for a current player, not to mention reports of some exceedingly shady actions around a few prospects Auburn was poised to steal out from under them this season.

They're scared to death of Auburn no matter what happens with the DL coach position.

Lance Thompson survived seemingly one 2009 injury after another to his linebacker corps and kept Tennessee's defense ranked in the top 25 nationally.

The Vols lost starting middle linebacker Nick Reveiz in the season's fourth game, then lost his replacement, Savion Frazier, just four games later. Freshman prospect Greg King was lost for the season in the Vanderbilt contest and junior stalwart LaMarcus Thompson battled a neck injury for most of the season.

Still, Thompson's charges proved difficult to stop. Senior Rico McCoy led the team with 119 tackles and topped the 300-tackle mark for his career. Freshman Herman Lathers picked up in the middle and earned Freshman All-SEC honors. Thompson arrived in Knoxville one year ago the owner of a championship pedigree.

The Riverdale, Ga., native helped mold national title-winners at Georgia Tech and LSU, and spent his two seasons before UT rejuvenating Alabama's fortunes toward the SEC elite as outside linebackers coach and recruiting specialist.

All told, Thompson has been a member of two national championship staffs, a pair of SEC titles, two ACC championships and one Conference USA divisional winner.

Thompson owns two separate coaching stints alongside Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban, having originally worked for Saban at LSU for the 2002-03 seasons before rejoining him at Alabama in 2007. He served LSU as the assistant head coach in charge of recruiting and tight ends during their national championship season in 2003.

In addition to Saban, Thompson has worked for numerous national or conference head coaches of the year. Included on that list are Central Florida's George O'Leary, Georgia Tech's Bobby Ross and Ralph Friedgen and Alabama's Mike Dubose. Thompson also has fine-tuned his craft under such top-ranked defensive coordinators and Broyles Award candidates or recipients like Will Muschamp, Ellis Johnson, Kevin Steele, Randy Edsell, Jumbo Fisher, Kirby Smart and Monte Kiffin.

After his LSU tenure, Thompson spent three years as defensive coordinator at Central Florida. Thompson developed one of the nation's youngest defenses in 2004, as the Golden Knights held their opposition to 21 points or less in three of the final four games of the season. He previously served as Alabama's defensive line coach in 1999-2000.

Prior to his first two-year stint at Alabama, Thompson was a part of the Georgia Tech staff for 11 years. During his stay with the Yellow Jackets, Thompson was defensive line coach in 1998; defensive ends coach in 1996 and 1997 and tight ends coach in 1995. Thompson served as Georgia Tech's recruiting coordinator from 1995-98 and then again in 2001. Prior to serving as an on-field coach for the Yellow Jackets, Thompson held the position of Director of Football Operations at Georgia Tech from 1992-94.

Thompson got his start in coaching in 1988, serving as a graduate assistant for two years at Georgia Tech, followed by two more years as a volunteer assistant in 1990 and 1991.

Thompson was a four-year letterman at The Citadel, where he earned his bachelor's degree in education and mathematics in 1987. He is single and the father of three daughters: Allie, Christina and Lane.

Thompson recently had an affair and a nasty divorce so I'm not sure how well that fits the family mold we're trying to create here.

i didnt know about the divorce but he did have an affair that went public and was the reason he left the turds for tenn. it happened in turdtown.

Terry Price did an outstanding job at Auburn. While some may dismiss him as part of the BBQ gang (not without reason), I feel like he is a good coach. Auburn was putting converted players on the D-line. Still he was able to coach them to produce. Please give the guy some well deserved credit.

While I think it's a better idea for Chizik to take his time, spring training is around the corner. The new D-line coach will need time to get to know the players and vice versa.

Actually, he left bama for UT and that is when the bama fans started throwing dirt at him. He was their top recruiter, and they were so angry that he left for a rival that they started crucifying him in the media.

Which is what they normally do when things don't go their way.

Does anyone have any info as to who might have the inside track to be the DL coach. Spring workouts will start pretty soon. I know Pelton's name was mentioned but is there anyone else? I don't believe Mike is with Vandy anymore since they hired a new head coach. I could be wrong though. Heck, it wouldn't be the first time.
