Yeah, I said in a different thread that Freeze needs to lighten up on Thorne. Give him the reigns of the offense, and let him go. If he doesn't oan out then he can give Geriner a shot. Hell, maybe Hank Brown. We all know by now Ashford is not a viable QB. Sorry, but that's just a fact.

I really think at this point that Freeze is a little mesmerized by Ashford's athleticism. I suspect Ashford can look somewhat serviceable in a controlled practice scenario, but if we're being honest we all know what happens when the lights come on in a real game situation. A shining example was Sat. night when he scrambles to his right, and throws a ball late up for grabs that should have been an easy interception. Ashford has athletic talent, but I would argue that he's actually not even dynamic with the ball in his hands. I think he would benefit himself greatly with a position change. I've seen suggestions of RB, or slot receiver, but I'm not convinced that he is even playing on the right side of the football. At his size, and speed I am wondering if maybe he should move to safety. Just a thought.

Exactly. Cal baited Freeze, and Monty all week into a man challenge of trying to run on them. Add in the fact that Cal has some very good secondary guys that will most likely play on Sundays, and you had the perfect storm. Freeze has got to be smarter than that. Many years ago in the sixties Bear Bryant talked all week about how good our safety was in run support. Think it was either McClinton, or Willingham. First series they ran play action, sucked him up, and threw a TD right over the top of him. Saturday night sorta reminded me of that. Hugh has got to be wiser than that.

Here's the thing. Freeze is an excellent football coach, but this mess is entirely on him. He needs to leave Ashford on the bench where he belongs, lighten up on Thorne a little, and let the guy get comfortable. Thorne is trying to learn to be an RPO quarterback, and needs a boost to his confidence. He ain't going to get it with Freeze trotting Ashford out there. Give Thorne the reins, and if it doesn't get better then let Geriner have a shot. Ashford ain't it we know that already. He's a good athlete, but that's as far as it goes. A position change would benefit him in the long run, but making him see it may not be an option.
