1. ok i am confused. does sonny leave or does he stay for another year?
2. i mentioned facebook smartazz because i know most of the people in my community and i see what they say. i told you churches are preaching politics around here tho it seems not all of them.
3. that i would not pretend to tell you i know but we can do better. we have turned Camelot into a political cesspool. we allow cops to shoot people in the back. one cop just chot a black man in the back of the head while the cop was on top of him. i think the cop said he was scared? i am sick of this kind of crap. churches trying to game the system and playing politics. pols doing what their corporate masters want and not what the country wants? we are now fighting over military grade weapons in the home and taking the rights of what a woman can and cannot do with her body? you remember you asked me this when they start coming for birth control. a country can implode just like it can rise up if we keep acting stupid. we have people living in the streets because they cannot afford a home or cannot get medical help. many of our vets are homeless but lets keep waving the flags like good patriots right and the hell with the real world. this country runs on freedom? ask kap what his decision cost him and he went and got advice from a seal on how to honorably protest the country? ask why in many cases poor folks pay more for taxes than corps? we are honestly letting our kids get murdered in school because people have to have their military style weapons? and before you come at me on that ask yourself why they make most of your rifles look like assault weapons? because they are popular. how long did it take those cops to stop the uvalde shooter? oh thats right they did not because they know those vests will not stop certain rounds. TRUMP used his anger and his crookedness to stock the supreme court when breaking an agreement between left and right. we got pols that believe in the crap of anon and the rest of those idiots. and what is next for gays? they gonna start throwing them off rooftops like they do in parts of the middle east? between kennedy dying along with his brother, martin luther king and the viet nam war we sucked all the goodness out of this country. it is very sad. i tell you two things i would start with. get rid of dark money in politics.make time limits for serving in american politicans where they are more interested in serving the people again instead of corporate masters. quit letting bad cops shoot people in the back and that sort of thing and get away with it. send religious peds to prison. ALL of them. all they do is move them to a new area and they just start again. and if any of the justices lied on their hearings like is being claimed then file charges. with the highest court in the land do we need a bunch of liars because something is special to them? once again you just keep watching because worse is coming.
4. Sonny DiChiara becomes Auburn baseball’s 3rd consensus All-American By Tom Green | tgreen@al.com 3-4 minutes May 25, 2022; Auburn, AL, USA; Sonny DiChiara (17) reacts after a home run during the game between Auburn and Kentucky at Hoover Metropolitan Complex. Mandatory Credit: Jacob Taylor/AU AthleticsJacob Taylor/AU Athletics Auburn’s Thicc King has been crowned. Sonny DiChiara joined some royal company Monday as he became the third player in Auburn history -- and the second of the Butch Thompson era -- to earn consensus All-America honors on the Plains. The Tigers’ first baseman joins Frank Thomas (1989) and former No. 1 overall pick Casey Mize (2018) as the only players to earn consensus All-America designation in program history. DiChiara was named a first-team All-American by D1 Baseball, Baseball America, Perfect Game and the American Baseball Coaches Association. He also picked up second-team honors from Collegiate Baseball, College Baseball Foundation and the National College Baseball Writers Association. RELATED: How Sonny DiChiara became one of college baseball’s most feared, beloved hitters The consensus All-America tag caps a memorable season for DiChiara, the former Samford slugger who transferred to Auburn last summer. A native of Hoover, DiChiara made a massive impact for Auburn as the program advanced to the College World Series for the second time in three postseasons and won a game in Omaha for the first time since 1997. DiChiara was the SEC Co-Player of the Year, a first-team All-SEC selection and a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award and Dick Howser Trophy, both of which recognize college baseball’s top player. DiChiara hit .383 on the season with a .529 on-base percentage and .777 slugging percentage. He reached base at the second-best clip among all Division I players this season, and his .529 on-base percentage finished as second in program history behind only Thomas (.568) and was 42 points higher than any other SEC player in the last 10 full seasons. He also hit 22 home runs this season, which led Auburn and ranked fourth in the SEC along with second-most in school history -- just one shy of matching 2010 SEC Player of the Year Hunter Morris. DiChiara’s 22 home runs this season gave him 63 for his career, which are tied for the second-most among active D-I players. DiChiara drove in 59 runs for the Tigers this season while also drawing 68 walks on the year. That marked the second-most in a single season in team history and helped DiChiara reach base at a historic clip. Along with finishing second only to Thomas in single-season on-base percentage at Auburn, DiChiara reached base in all but two of Auburn’s 65 games, and he reached base multiple times in 49 of the Tigers’ games. 5. The Constitution Was Literally Written By Slaveowners. Why Is America Obsessed With Upholding It? Candace McDuffie Mon, June 27, 2022 at 3:30 PM Members of the Supreme Court pose for a group photo at the Supreme Court in Washington, April 23, 2021. Last week, the Supreme Court eviscerated a woman’s right to abortion, undermined Miranda rights, expanded gun rights and allowed border patrol agents to operate with even further impunity. Today, it ruled that a former Washington state high school football coach can pray on the field immediately after games—regardless of the religious backgrounds of the students. The mostly conservative justices are using the Constitution as a smoke screen for their rulings—which will continue to demolish even more human rights. The governing document was constructed during the Constitutional Convention that occurred in Philadelphia from May 5, 1787 to September 17, 1787. Read more 'You Got McDonald's Money?' and Other Phrases We Remember From Childhood Black in the Day: Barrettes, Blue Magic and Other Ways We Laid Our Hair Cheat Sheet: What is Critical Race Theory? Toasted: Jerk Chicken Empanadas and Mango Chili Sauce The primary authors consisted of: John Adams, Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison. The last two men on that list owned slaves. How can this set of laws still guide a nation when it was concocted by white men who looked at Black people as property and not as human? The fact that a Black man—Justice Clarence Thomas—is working to erode the rights of millions of people is more than ironic: it’s downright pathetic. In a concurring opinion Thomas wrote Friday, he claimed that the Supreme Court’s controversial June decisions aimed to weaken substantive due process which protects certain rights even if they’re not listed in the Constitution. “As I have previously explained, ‘substantive due process’ is an oxymoron that ‘lack[s] any basis in the Constitution,’” he wrote. He also said that it’s “legal fiction” that is “particularly dangerous.” Even more ironically, how is it up to the states to decide a woman’s right to abortion yet not interfere with a person’s right to carry a concealed firearm? In Justice Samuel Alito’s concurrence, he stated: “Does the dissent think that laws like New York’s prevent or deter such atrocities? How does the dissent account for the fact that one of the mass shootings near the top of its list took place in Buffalo? The New York law at issue in this case obviously did not stop the perpetrator.” Does Alito realize that by that line of reasoning, abortion laws won’t stop abortions from happening? Seven of the nine Supreme Court justices were put there by presidents from a party who haven’t won a popular vote more than once in three decades. Shouldn’t the Twelfth Amendment, which established the electoral college, be revisited? The Fifteenth Amendment gave Black people the right to vote. However, last year nineteen states passed laws that restricted access to voting. The Thirteenth Amendment outlawed slavery and involuntary servitude, but America’s mass incarceration problem proves this as untrue. Why isn’t the Supreme Court clamoring to restore these rights or rectify systems that fail the people? It’s clear that the right will continue to twist and contort anything they can to carry out their agenda—an agenda that has and will always harm this country’s most marginalized and vulnerable populations. And honestly, the Constitution will always be a hell of an excuse to oppress Black folks on behalf of white supremacy.
6. these cats are going to force their beliefs on the rest of america. we already have preachers preaching libs are godless and evil. thar dude in tennessee did not stutter when he told all dems to get out of his church. when the levee breaks it is going to be bad. i mean come on we allow lies from tucker and hannity and others that help push this madness.i imagine the left has a few liars as well but here is the problem. people want to defend freedom of speech even when it is a lie which just fuels more and more hate. we allow corps to buy their own politicians so they can push their own agenda's instead of what is good for america. then instead of holding those accountable we turn on our neighbors and our friends.this is a sad thing and we need a miracle.
7. i believe this as well. i see it on facebook every single day.
8. i do not waste time watching the view but it popped up on my yahoo news feed. AND trump and company gamed the system with the dems basically doing nothing and here we are. and the christians do not care and many of them are arming themselves over worshiping the bible and not jesus. hell i am just about ready to empty savings so i can fight back by buying me one of those assault rifles and if i get a thirty round clip i might be able to hit someone with a bullet or two. i say a lot in jest and some of it you guys get and some do not but here is the gods honest truth as i see it from my view...........many righties are emboldened because they think libs are *******. that is all i hear. well you can add on the commie part. take a good men and fight them by smearing them and enable the guys robbing us blind for the corporate masters. add we are anti gun and the folks swear by the ten commandants are pretty much chomping at the bits to kill em some lefty commie bastards. the really big mass shooting has not occurred yet but it is coming. remember what i said. and a whole lot of this is the christian right. welcome to my adhd mind coffee but this is how i think. and people can laugh but i thought the hippy era would bring in more peace, love, and understanding. instead they beat us in the street and filled our streets with drugs that are still killing folks today. the america i know and love is dying right before my eyes and i feel helpless.
9. rudy has turned into a joke. it is sad what he has become and how people use him to further their own ends to his own disgrace. he should worry more about about what comes out of his own mouth as well as that darn hair color!
10. i like blunt people. people dance too much with feelings of greatness they want everyone to see when they should just get to the point. clarence stepped in it i hope he gets to sweat his marriage some. he has opened the door to the christian right doing away with the pill as well as other forms of birth control. i can only believe he thinks like many christians claim that women are magically pregnant after sex even tho scientists say "Implantation usually starts about 6 days after fertilization, and takes about 3-4 days to complete. The embryo develops from cells on the inside of the ball." to me this is just another way for the american taliban to force us what we can and cannot do with our lives because many christians say sex out of wedlock is a sin. they will be coming after birth control so what is next? some of you can laugh all you want one of my best friends believes this and he is a preacher. our youngsters are going to screw up right? i mean we are by design created to procreate are we not? i believe it is something about survival of the species? if has been many years since i have been in a science class but my heart tells me if they are coming for your birth control they do not give a damn about abortion as much as they do control. it really makes me mad because i believe in freedoms some are trying to take away from us. someone tell me how birth control is evil and needs to be outlawed because i just do not understand. you would think if it saved one babies life the christian right would be all for it.

U.S. Supreme Court takes aim at separation of church and state 1/2 U.S. Supreme Court takes aim at separation of church and state FILE PHOTO: Anti-abortion activists attend the annual "March for Life", in Washington 2/2 U.S. Supreme Court takes aim at separation of church and state FILE PHOTO: Actors dressed up as Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus to replicate the nativity scene in front of the Supreme Court during a event organized by the religious group "Faith and Liberty" to exercise First Amendment Rights and support of religious Lawrence Hurley and Andrew Chung Tue, June 28, 2022 at 5:08 AM By Lawrence Hurley and Andrew Chung WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The conservative-majority U.S. Supreme Court has chipped away at the wall separating church and state in a series of new rulings, eroding American legal traditions intended to prevent government officials from promoting any particular faith. In three decisions in the past eight weeks, the court has ruled against government officials whose policies and actions were taken to avoid violating the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment prohibition on governmental endorsement of religion - known as the "establishment clause." The court on Monday backed a Washington state public high school football coach who was suspended by a local school district for refusing to stop leading Christian prayers with players on the field after games. On June 21, it endorsed taxpayer money paying for students to attend religious schools under a Maine tuition assistance program in rural areas lacking nearby public high schools. On May 2, it ruled in favor of a Christian group that sought to fly a flag emblazoned with a cross at Boston city hall under a program aimed at promoting diversity and tolerance among the city's different communities. The court's conservative justices, who hold a 6-3 majority, in particular have taken a broad view of religious rights. They also delivered a decision on Friday that was hailed by religious conservatives - overturning the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that legalized abortion nationwide - though that case did not involve the establishment clause. Cornell Law School professor Michael Dorf said the court's majority appears skeptical of government decision-making premised on secularism. "They regard secularism, which for centuries has been the liberal world's understanding of what it means to be neutral, as itself a form of discrimination against religion," Dorf said of the conservative justices. In Monday's ruling, conservative Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote that the court's aim was to prevent public officials from being hostile to religion as they navigate the establishment clause. Gorsuch said that "in no world may a government entity's concerns about phantom violations justify actual violations of an individuals First Amendment rights." 'WALL OF SEPARATION' It was President Thomas Jefferson who famously said in an 1802 letter that the establishment clause should represent a "wall of separation" between church and state. The provision prevents the government from establishing a state religion and prohibits it from favoring one faith over another. In the three recent rulings, the court decided that government actions intended to maintain a separation of church and state had instead infringed separate rights to free speech or the free exercise of religion also protected by the First Amendment. But, as liberal Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote in the Maine case, such an approach "leads us to a place where separation of church and state becomes a constitutional violation." Opinions vary over to how much flexibility government officials have in allowing religious expression, whether by public employees, on public land or by people during an official proceeding. Those who favor a strict separation of church and state are concerned that landmark Supreme Court precedents, including a 1962 ruling that prohibited prayer in public schools, could be imperiled. "It's a whole new door that (the court) has opened to what teachers, coaches and government employees can do when it comes to proselytizing to children," said Nick Little, legal director for the Center for Inquiry, a group promoting secularism and science. Lori Windham, a lawyer with the religious liberty legal group Becket, said the court's decisions will allow for greater religious expression by individuals without undermining the establishment clause. "Separation of church and state continues in a way that protects church and state. It stops the government from interfering with churches but it also protects diverse religious expression," Windham added. Most of the religious-rights rulings in recent years involved Christian plaintiffs. But the court also has backed followers of other religions including a Muslim woman in 2015 who was denied a retail sales job because she wore a head scarf for religious reasons and a Buddhist death row inmate in 2019 who wanted a spiritual adviser present at his execution in Texas. The court also sided with both Christian and Jewish congregations in challenges based on religious rights to governmental restrictions such as limits on public gatherings imposed as public safety measures during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nicole Stelle Garnett, a Notre Dame Law School professor who joined a brief filed with the justices backing the football coach, said the court was merely making clear that governments must treat religious people the same as everyone else. Following Monday's ruling, many issues relating to religious conduct in schools may be litigated anew under the court's rationale that the conduct must be "coercive" in order to raise establishment clause concerns.
12. 'The View': Whoopi Goldberg Sends Warning To Clarence Thomas Amid Roe Rollback: 'He Better Hope That They Don't Come For You' With Loving Trey Mangum Mon, June 27, 2022 at 11:36 AM Whoopi Goldberg has a stern warning for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, saying that a Roe rollback could result in a Loving v. Virginia one as well. After the dissolution of Roe v. Wade Friday, The View panel talked about the ruling Monday. Goldberg talked about how Thomas' marriage to Ginni Thomas, a white woman, would be illegal if Loving v. Virginia, which struck down individual states' laws against interracial marriage, never happened or got repealed. Not surprisingly, Thomas left that particular ruling out of his concurring opinion, which hinted at rolling back contraception and privacy rights, as well as same-sex marriage. “What’s next? As Clarence Thomas is signaling, they would like to get rid of contraception. Do you understand, sir? No, because you don’t have to use it!” Goldberg said, according to Decider. “Well, he better hope that they don’t come for you, Clarence, and say you should not be married to your wife–who happens to be white. Because they will move that, and you better hope that nobody says, ‘you know you’re not in the Constitution, you’re back to being a quarter of a person.'” Goldberg also said that while she is "very pro-life," she said she's never been "anti-life." She added, “I want people to have the lives they want, I don’t want to force anybody coming in my house telling me how to raise my daughter and what she needs because they don’t know, and I appreciate everybody’s religion. But I do not subscribe to you religion, and I don’t ask you to subscribe to mine.” During the same panel, Sunny Hostin surprised everyone by saying she is against abortion, even in the most extreme cases including sexual assault and incest. But, she added that she is in disagreement with the Supreme Court for striking down people’s right to choose. However, her statement about how extreme her belief is regarding abortion met with swift condemnation from viewers online. i would laugh my behind off..............
13. After abortion ruling, critics renew blasts at Sen. Collins DAVID SHARP and PATRICK WHITTLE Fri, June 24, 2022 at 3:18 PM PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — Sen. Susan Collins was blasted Friday for the overturning of Roe v. Wade, as opponents targeted her votes to confirm two justices to the Supreme Court who were in the majority opinion allowing states to ban abortion. Critics of the Maine senator haven’t forgotten the key role she played in confirming Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, and she was ripped anew on social media. Some opponents took to name-calling and attacked Collins for being naive or complicit. Others called for her resignation. University of Maine professor Amy Fried said Collins “helped make this happen,” and the Maine Democratic Party said part of the blame lies at Collins’ feet. Collins was considered a crucial vote on Kavanaugh. She waited months before announcing her decision in a 45-minute floor speech. Shortly after her speech ended, Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin announced he, too, was voting for Kavanaugh. The Senate vote was 50-48. Mainers For Accountable Leadership, a liberal advocacy group, said Collins “must immediately apologize to these organizations who she dismissed and demeaned in her floor speech announcing her support of Kavanaugh.” Rachel Irwin, who works for Building Back Together, which promotes President Joe Biden’s policy agenda, called Friday’s abortion news Collins’ “legacy.” Collins, a Republican, has been a supporter of a woman’s right to an abortion. She has also crossed the aisle on key issues — including splitting with Republicans on former President Donald Trump’s ban on travel from several Muslim countries, the repeal of the Affordable Care Act, and on whether to convict Trump after his impeachment following the Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021. The senator said in a statement Friday that she had received assurances from Kavanaugh and Gorsuch that Roe v. Wade was an established legal precedent. “Throwing out a precedent overnight that the country has relied upon for half a century is not conservative,” she said. “It is a sudden and radical jolt to the country that will lead to political chaos, anger, and a further loss of confidence in our government.” Collins’ statement came moments before Biden called the ruling “a tragic error.” She did not respond to a request for an interview Friday from The Associated Press. The senator in her statement took aim at Gorsuch and Kavanaugh for their about-face from what they told her privately and said in their confirmation hearings. “This decision is inconsistent with what Justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh said in their testimony and their meetings with me, where they both were insistent on the importance of supporting long-standing precedents that the country has relied upon,” she said. The vote to confirm Gorsuch wasn't as narrow as for Kavanaugh, whose nomination was nearly derailed by accusations of sexual assault that he denied. Senators approved Gorsuch's nomination with a 54-45 vote. Collins voted against the nomination of Amy Coney Barrett, saying that it was too late in Trump’s presidency and that his successor should’ve made a nomination to fill the vacancy. Despite the vitriol against Collins and coat hangers mailed to her office, she easily won a fifth term in 2020. She said she supports a bipartisan bill to codify the right to an abortion. “Our goal with this legislation is to do what the court should have done — provide the consistency in our abortion laws that Americans have relied upon for 50 years,” she said. some say susan is the culprit. she says she was lied to. 14. i grew up admiring tejas. i often wish i had lived instead of alabama often as a child. now i do not care so much. these people are over reaching so much as to force religious bias back into the schools. their laws to whitewash { pun intended } racism and throw it under the bus is awful. it sends a clear signal that folks of color do not count. they make it hard on the lgbt community and have added this language to the republican platform. "But what Texas Republicans had to say about gay rights and homosexuality and transgender people really stands out. First and foremost, the party wrote that homosexuality is an abnormal lifestyle choice. They also included language that says there shouldn't be any special legal protections for gay, lesbian and bisexual people, and they oppose any criminal or civil penalties against people who oppose homosexuality. " For this record this was taken from npr two days ago and i will post the whole article at the end of my talking points. So now we are making it easier for violence to be brought against gays with little little to no protection? if it is in their platform you can bet you sweet azz they will do their best to put it into law. it is just sickening. man is made in gods own image right? is god fallible? is he dead? so what gives you the right to crap on people god decided to create? he works in mysterious ways. are you going to worship the bible or are you going to worship god himself? people ignore or never consider the bible has been changed to reflect certain things and i believe this is why we are supposed to move on from the old testament. you can google it and find out for yourself as their are hundreds of articles. here is a statement "Absolutely. The evidence that the Bible has been altered is overwhelming. I recommend you read the works of critical scholars like Bart Ehrman and Robin Lane Fox. You will see just how altered the texts are." now these are just two out of hundreds or maybe thousands. King james is not the only one for a fact. jesus is love. too often religion is hate. we see it all the time in the country and the world. and yet the repukes think it is ok and god approves? i wonder how many rednecks or idiots say well lets go kill us a homosexual because the republican party seems think it is ok. and for them to leave these united states would cripple us and make us vulnerable to all our enemies. so much for patriotism right? they want what they want and screw the rest of the country. it is sickening and it is wrong. get your crap together texas i would love to admire you again.
15. did they hire minions to go to several states and try and get them to change legal votes to win the election? see the difference? no you do not. salty seems to be the only person in here to admit what is happening somewhat. now you guys are deflecting.................
16. using his secret decoder ring it means he just does not care. i warned everyone about trump and he got worse and worse and worse. now i am right not one single person has stepped up and apologized not one. you guys on the right are waiting for it to go away but most of you wish he was back for a few dollars and damn the country. why is it hard for you repubs to admit when you are wrong and have been had? even those claiming to be christian. it is not too late for me to forgive you guys..........
17. i thought i would give you guys a small window into her world. she is going through so much. her best buddy kim is helping her and i cannot reach out to talk when she is hurting. i am just asking for prayers for both of us. there is nothing worse than seeing a loved one hurt and not being able to do anything about it. i might have it wrong but i got it in my mind when female patients go through the looking like they are pregnant look it is the end of the line. Brenda Luna is feeling pained. 50m · 5 hours in chemo today. This new stuff is giving me terrible headaches, muscle and joint pain, and the usual fatigue. Still have my hair, but at this point vanity is out the window and I could care less if it all fell out. But in fact my hair is the best it’s ever been in my life. I have days where I have very little appetite though I do make myself eat small light snacks. Grapes are the best when I’m not hungry. No nausea, but then they’re so prepared for severe nausea that an anti nausea is infused as well as a horrible painful shot they give me before infusion. It goes in my arm. The other option is in the stomach. Oh hell no! This shot seriously hurts! It leaves a large knot and bruise. The knot takes a month to go away, and it hurts for the whole month. It hurts so much going in that they have to numb the area before injecting. I’m assuming it would feel 10X worse without it. My massive hernia is causing lower back muscle spasms that can be severe. I’m assuming because my back is supporting what my core should be. I’m told I may just have to live with it because it’s so large and too close to my colostomy. Whatever! It’s impossible to find a hernia binder for ostomy patients. So between the hernia and ostomy I look like I’m in the beginning of the second trimester of pregnancy. And yes, I find maternity pants are quite comfortable with added light support. So if you see a 67 year old pregnant woman, it’s probably me. Like I said, vanity is out the window. As much as this post is a bitch fest, I should mention that I’m happy. My beautiful friend Kym and I see each other every other weekend. We do fun things together, we laugh a lot, we eat really good food. I have nice neighbors, I still enjoy cooking, I love to take walks as long as it’s not storming outside, my brother, sisters and extended family and friends love me, and I have my crusty old bird Yoshi to keep me company, or irritate me. Not to mention my last chemo infusion is July 20th! Every cancer patient has their own story. They’re all different. I’ve seen a lot of suffering. I don’t really feel like I’m suffering, just painfully uncomfortable at times but I refuse to let it overshadow all the good I’ve experienced. I’ve seen a lot of people stroll through treatment unfazed. That was pretty much me until the meds were changed. But this treatment will be over soon. I’ve met a few people that have gone through hell, repeatedly for years, but their positive attitudes, their spirit is intact. They’re my inspiration! The one thing I’m really grateful for is that cancer struck me in my later years instead of my youth. I’ve met so many young women, and men, in their thirties and forties, with young children and promising futures. The fear of the unknown is heartbreaking. As we age we learn to accept the inevitable. That’s not to say that I’m ready to go. Oh hell no! There’s a lot more life in me. A lot worth fighting for. Nobody is promised old age and that’s never more apparent to us as we grow older. 23. sportscasting.com College Basketball Players Can't Wear Nos. 6-9 and It's a Problem 4-5 minutes In high school and NCAA basketball, players cannot use the numbers 6, 7, 8, or 9 in either the ones or tens place on their jerseys. This seems like a weird rule for college basketball players to have to follow. But, according to Rule 1, Section 22, Article 7, Clause b. 2 of the NCAA Men’s Basketball 2018–2019 Rules, “The following numbers are legal: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 00, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 50, 51, 52, 53, 54, and 55. Team rosters can include 0 or 00, but not both.” This eliminates 6 through 9, 16 through 19, 26 through 29, 36 through 39, 46 through 49, and everything over 55. That’s 35% of the numbers between 00 and 55. Confused yet? So are we, let’s take a closer look at why college basketball players have to follow this strict guideline. How are jersey numbers used in basketball? College basketball players’ numbers are kept in writing by the scorer, but they’re also indicated on the hands by the officials when there is a foul. The rules say officials should “Signal the official timer to stop the game clock when a foul occurs, designate the offender to the official scorer and indicate with finger(s) the number of free throws.” The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) is even more specific in its rules. They specify that “The Official shall report fouls to the scorer by using two hands to display the jersey number of the person who committed the foul. The official’s right hand will indicate the first digit of the number or the tens and the left hand will indicate the second digit of the number or the ones…. The digits of the number should be displayed at the same time.” Why does the rule exist for college basketball players? Since officials are supposed to communicate the jersey number of a player who committed a foul using two hands to indicate the entire number, there are numbers like six that would cause confusion. Depending on which fingers were used, the scorer might think the official meant 15 or 51 rather than six. Having the rule creates a nice, simple system that minimizes confusion for the scorer. According to the New York Times, the NCAA has followed the numbering rule likely since the early 1960s. However, they don’t have a record of why the rule was officially introduced. Keeping this rule is likely also tradition since it’s been around for so many decades. When does this rule cause problems? This rule becomes a problem for schools that have retired a lot of jersey numbers. It doesn’t leave many number choices for new college basketball players. For example, Michigan State currently has nine retired numbers out of the 37 options while Duke has 13. Could the rule be changed? Critics of this policy point out that scorers should be able to figure out the difference between six and 15 and 51. Instant replays also could make the fingers less crucial. Replay equipment is now required at NCAA games. There have been rule changes regarding NCAA college basketball jersey numbers in the past. Numbers one and two used to be on the “not allowed” list too. The reasoning was, they could be confused with the signal for the number of free throws. They are both permitted today. What do other leagues do? Other basketball leagues don’t seem to have this number problem. The NBA does indicate the numbers of players who foul using fingers, but they don’t have the same restrictions on jersey numbers. In the NBA, any number can be used from 0 and 00 to 99. The Los Angeles Times does point out that, even in the NBA, numbers six through nine are less common. This makes sense since players want to keep their college numbers. Players on international FIBA teams can also use numbers 0, 00, and one through 99. Officials use two hands to show numbers, and they display the tens place first with the back of the hand(s) facing forward before displaying the ones place with the palm of the hand(s) facing forward. Before 2014, with the introduction of video replay for scorers, FIBA players used only numbers four through 15. Hopefully one day college basketball players will have the freedom to pick the jersey numbers they want. It really is a small thing to ask for in the grand scheme of it all.
