  1. Can Bo Nix shake off road game woes at Penn State? Glenn Sattell | 22 hours ago 4-5 minutes OK, the cupcakes have been properly digested, the confidence-building rent-a-wins are securely in the books. It’s showtime! And that means it’s time for Bo Nix to go on the road against a Top 25 team and have a big game. It’s time for Nix to silence his critics once and for all. Sure that’s easier said than done and though the No. 22 Tigers rolled up 60-plus points in back-to-back games for the first time since 1932, we still don’t really know how good this Auburn team is that surrounds Nix. We’re going to find out Saturday when the Tigers visit No. 10 Penn State. It’ll be the first time Auburn has faced the Nittany Lions during the regular season. The teams have met twice, both times in bowl games before these players entered grade school. For the Tigers to maintain their hot start, Nix must shake off his road game woes and play like we’ve seen him at Jordan-Hare. Again, easier said than done. Nix has played in 12 games away from Jordan-Hare in 2-plus years as Auburn’s starting quarterback. His numbers are cringe-worthy. He’s never thrown for 300 yards on the road, and his career-high for TD throws is 3, a figure he’s reached just once. In 2019, his freshman season, Nix recorded a quarterback rating of 112.76 in 6 road games. For reference, that rating today would rank 95th among QBs nationally. Most thought those numbers would improve in 2020, but that’s not what happened. Nix digressed and he posted a QB rating of 106.56 away from Jordan-Hare. Where would that rank today? Try 99th nationally. How does that compare with his rating in home games? Well, Nix compiled a mediocre 133.68 rating his freshman year. But as would be expected, he improved the following year to 155.05. In 2 games this season Nix has a QB rating of 199.17, which ranks 5th in the nation. It’s a minor miracle that the Tigers were able to actually win 5 of those 12 road games. But Auburn has won only twice in the past 8 road/neutral games; both were last season and both in the state of Mississippi. Auburn defeated Mississippi State, 24-10, despite Nix completing just 15-of-42 passes for 125 yards and topped Ole Miss, 35-28, with Nix throwing for 238 yards (23-of-30). It was 1 of only 4 road games in which Nix has thrown for more than 200 yards. That’s the kind of performance Auburn needs to see from Nix on Saturday if the Tigers hope to spring the upset. But there may be light at the end of the tunnel. Nix’s most recent game away from home was perhaps his best, at least statistically. Auburn was hammered by Northwestern, 35-19, in last year’s Citrus Bowl, but Nix put up fairly impressive numbers. He threw for 292 yards, a career-high away from Jordan-Hare. He completed 25-of-42 passes (59.5 percent). He threw 1 touchdown and did not toss a pick. Let’s hope that game started a trend for Nix toward coming out from under the dark cloud that hovers over him whenever the Tigers venture away from home. With Tank Bigsby to lean on in the backfield, it will be interesting to see just how head coach Bryan Harsin devises the game plan Saturday. Does he trust him enough to put the game on his shoulders? Or do we see another heavy dose of Bigsby and Jarquez Hunter? Penn State’s pass defense has given up 411 yards in 2 games and ranks no better than 68th nationally against the pass. Let’s see if Nix can take advantage. Can’t wait.
  2. Improved' Auburn offensive line faces challenge at Penn State ByJason Caldwell 3-4 minutes AUBURN, Alabama—Rotating seven offensive linemen with the first team offense in the first two games of the 2021 football season, Auburn is continuing to try to narrow down the starting five as the Tigers get ready for their first true test of the season this Saturday night at Penn State. It appears that has been settled with Brandon Council and Keiondre Jones listed as the starters at left guard and right guard after sharing time with Alec Jackson and Tashawn Manning the first two weeks, but first-year coach Bryan Harsin said the Tigers could still have some rotation even this week against the Nittany Lions. “We need to lock in even more and get a little bit better so we can be stronger with those five and then the seven guys that kind of rotate in and out so we can be really strong with those seven guys,” Harsin said of the goal this week in practice. “We need some other guys to step up and just be better in their preparation and show it in practice so we can be deeper for any injuries that might happen so we can have some depth. “We’re developing that each and every day. I think we’ve improved. This week is another opportunity for that to keep developing, and hopefully shining, when we get a chance to go out there and play Saturday.” Facing a defense that is allowing 11.5 points and just 327 yards of total offense per game in wins over Wisconsin and Ball State, Harsin knows how important his offensive line is going to be if the Tigers want to come out of Happy Valley with a win. “That’s going to be something for our offensive line, we know we’ve got to be able to go out there and get that done this week in practice,” Harsin said. “We need a great look from our scout team. The guys on the scout team can’t go out there and be lazy and give us cruddy looks and not go hard and not care about the importance of getting the offensive line ready. “I think the O-Line has done a good job,” he added. “They have been solid. I think we have improved in some areas. I think we need to continue to be consistent, but I do like the work ethic the O-Line has shown. I like the attitude of the O-Line. I think the guys have been focused.” One of the biggest issues will be the ability to run the football against a quality front seven for the Nittany Lions. Auburn is ranked third nationally in rushing, averaging 340 yards per game, and running the football is a big key for a Mike Bobo-coached offense. In the opener at Wisconsin, the Badgers picked up 17 rushing first downs and ran for 228 yards, but had 58 yards in negative plays thanks to an athletic front seven for Penn State. “I think Penn State’s front is very good,” Harsin said. “They do a very good job. I think their linebackers are very good players. That’s a program that, historically, has had very good linebackers in it. Their D-Line plays hard. Schematically, they do things with them that creates a challenge.” 2COMMENTS Kickoff for the nationally televised game on ABC is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CDT.

  9. al.com Auburn NFL roundup: Anthony Schwartz starts fast By Mark Inabinett | minabinett@al.com 5-6 minutes Wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.’s absence on Sunday cleared space for the Cleveland Browns to get a contribution from wide receiver Anthony Schwartz in his first NFL game. The Brown lost their season-opener 33-29 to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, but not before putting the two-time defending AFC champions in an early hole behind quarterback Baker Mayfield’s connection to Schwartz. A third-round draft choice from Auburn on April 30, Schwartz caught three passes for 69 yards and had a 17-yard run in his debut. Schwartz caught a 16-yard pass on third-and-3 during Cleveland’s first possession, had a 44-yard reception on the opening snap of the second and caught a 9-yard pass and ran for 17 yards on consecutive plays during the third as the Browns scored touchdowns the first three times that they had the football. The 22-10 lead wasn’t enough for Cleveland, though. Schwartz became the fourth rookie in Cleveland history with at least 69 receiving yards in a season-opening game, joining Oscar Roan (69 yards) in 1975, JaJuan Dawson (83) in 2000 and Corey Coleman (69) in 2016, and he’s the only one of those players who had any rushing yards in his debut. Beckham sustained a season-ending knee injury in the seventh game of the 2020 campaign. He warmed up before Sunday’s game, but the Browns decided the three-time Pro Bowler wasn’t ready to play yet. Schwartz was among the 14 former Auburn players who got on the field on the first Sunday of the NFL’s 102nd season. In the other Sunday games: Houston Texans 37, Jacksonville Jaguars 21 · Jaguars safety Rudy Ford (New Hope) made three tackles. · Jaguars safety Daniel Thomas (Lee-Montgomery) was designated as a game-day inactive. Seattle Seahawks 28, Indianapolis Colts 16 · Braden Smith started at right offensive tackle for the Colts. Carolina Panthers 19, New York Jets 14 · Derrick Brown started at defensive tackle for the Panthers. Brown made four tackles, recorded a sack and knocked down a pass. Brown had two sacks last season as a rookie. · Jamien Sherwood started at linebacker for the Jets in his first NFL game. Sherwood made one tackle. A fifth-round choice in the NFL Draft on May 1, Sherwood left the game because of a foot injury. Cincinnati Bengals 27, Minnesota Vikings 24 (OT) · C.J. Uzomah started at tight end for the Bengals. Uzomah caught two passes for 35 yards. Uzomah had a 32-yard reception on a fourth-and-1 snap in overtime that moved Cincinnati to the Minnesota 20-yard line. The Bengals’ Evan McPherson kicked the game-winning field goal as time ran out in the extra period three plays later. San Francisco 49ers 41, Detroit Lions 33 · Forty-Niners defensive end Dee Ford (St. Clair County) recorded a sack and two quarterback hits. Ford played for the first time since Sept. 13, 2020. A back injury limited him to only the first game during the 2020 season. Philadelphia Eagles 32, Atlanta Falcons 6 · Falcons defensive lineman Marlon Davidson (Greenville) made three tackles. · Falcons long snapper Josh Harris handled the snapping duties on six punts and two field-goal attempts and made three tackles on special teams. · Eagles punter Arryn Siposs averaged 47.3 yards on four punts in his first NFL game. Siposs had a 41-yard punt downed at the Atlanta 8-yard line, a 48-yard punt that was returned 7 yards to the Atlanta 14, a 46-yard punt downed at the Atlanta 8 and 54-yard punt that was returned 7 yards to the Atlanta 31, but an illegal-block penalty on the return pushed the Falcons back to their 18. Denver Broncos 27, New York Giants 13 · Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton caught three passes for 65 yards. On New York’s third snap of the season, Slayton caught a 42-yard pass to move the Giants to the Denver 30-yard line, but New York ended up punting from the Broncos 43. Miami Dolphins 17, New England Patriots 16 · Noah Igbinoghene (Hewitt-Trussville) was designated as a game-day inactive. · Patriots defensive back Jonathan Jones made the seventh interception of his career with 8:07 left in the fourth quarter to put New England’s offense at the 50-yard line trailing by one point. The Patriots couldn’t capitalize on Jones’ takeaway and lost a fumble at the Miami 11-yard line. · Linebacker Brandon King (Thompson) played but did not record any stats. Los Angeles Rams 34, Chicago Bears 14 · Bears defensive lineman Angelo Blackson made four tackles. Week 1 kicked off with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beating the Dallas Cowboys 31-29 on Thursday night. Tampa Bay cornerback Carlton Davis intercepted a pass, and Bucs cornerback Jamel Dean reached a career high with nine tackles. Week 1 concludes with the Baltimore Ravens-Las Vegas Raiders game at 7:15 p.m. CDT Monday at Allegiant Stadium in Paradise, Nevada. ABC and ESPN will televise the game. 12. bama has one. a wwe style belt. and they have more five stars on their program than any other program i know of. practice and work outs are brutal most of the time so i say let them have some fun on game day. and i get where maybe it is a single person award and not a team one. our team plays hard so let them celebrate a play if they want to. who is it hurting? can anyone tell me? times change. things change. i love seeing our kids run on the field with an american flag. it is new. why have we not been doing it all this time? let them have some fun.
