  2. PolitiFact: Nancy Pelosi doesn’t drink, so why do false claims about her being drunk keep going viral Daniel Funke 6-7 minutes As a partisan fight over the White House coronavirus task force continues to play out in Washington, an altered video that makes it look like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is drunk has gone viral on Facebook. The video, which was published July 30, has more than 2 million views. It shows Pelosi drinking from a plastic cup and slurring her words as she asks a reporter to clarify a question at a press conference. "This is unbelievable, she is blowed out of her mind," the poster wrote in the caption, "I bet this gets taken down!" The video was flagged as part of Facebook’s efforts to combat false news and misinformation on its News Feed. (Read more about our partnership with Facebook.) Screenshot from Facebook. [ Screenshot from Facebook ] But the video is doctored — Pelosi’s speech was slowed down to make it look like she was drunk at the news conference. The footage comes from the speaker’s weekly press conference on May 20, during which she answered a question about President Donald Trump suggesting on Twitter that MSNBC host Joe Scarborough had committed murder (a claim we’ve rated Pants on Fire). In the unaltered video, Pelosi’s speech is not slurred. The altered clip uses a technique called “doctoring.” That process includes “cropping, changing speed, using Photoshop, dubbing audio, or adding or deleting visual information,” according to the Washington Post’s guide to manipulated video. A graphic at the end of the altered video suggests that it was originally published on TikTok. CNN reported that the video-sharing platform removed the video, which received 37,000 views, for violating its "synthetic media policy." For now, however, the manipulated clip of Pelosi slurring her words remains on Facebook. It’s the latest example of misinformation that attempts to portray the first female speaker of the house as a drunk. Since Pelosi was re-elected in January 2019, PolitiFact has debunked several false claims about her being intoxicated. The hoaxes range from out-of-context photos that make her appear inebriated to deliberately manipulated videos to make it sound like she’s slurring her words. The TikTok clip is similar to previous manipulated videos, and it comes as Pelosi and Trump trade barbs over the president’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. But the persistence of false claims about Pelosi being intoxicated is ironic, considering the speaker is not known to drink. We requested an interview with Pelosi for this story. Her office declined, but spokesman Drew Hammill told us in an email that the speaker doesn’t drink. (Pelosi’s office told us she doesn’t drink for a similar fact-check in 2010.) That lines up with what others have said about Pelosi over the years. After a manipulated video of the speaker slurring her words went viral on social media in May 2019, her daughter, Christine Pelosi, tweeted a rebuttal. “Republicans and their conservative allies have been pumping this despicable fake meme for years! Now they are caught,” she said. “#FactCheck: Madam Speaker doesn’t even drink alcohol!” RELATED: Viral video of Nancy Pelosi slowed down her speech We reached out to each Democratic leader in the House to get their thoughts on the recurring drunk hoaxes, but we didn’t hear back. Experts said portraying Pelosi as a drunk is a simple way to attack her credibility and spread misinformation. "For those who want to damage Pelosi's reputation, this is low-hanging fruit," said Rebekah Tromble, associate director of the Institute for Data, Democracy and Politics at George Washington University, in an email. "It's easy to pair this message with an unflattering picture and create a lasting memory of the speaker." False claims that allege Pelosi is intoxicated can spread more quickly than other kinds of disinformation because Pelosi’s many public appearances mean there’s a lot of source material for misinformers to use to create new hoaxes. “There’s a ‘turtles all the way down’ quality to these claims,” said Ethan Porter, an assistant professor at the George Washington University School of Media and Public Affairs, in an email. “Through their repetition, peddlers of false news can point readers back to earlier (false), stories which made the same (false) allegations.” False claims about Pelosi being drunk in public have been around for as long as she’s been in office. In 2010, former Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann said Pelosi "has been busy sticking the taxpayer with her $100,000 bar tab for alcohol on the military jets that she's flying." We rated that Pants on Fire! In 2017, a false news website asserted that Pelosi had been involved in a drunk-driving accident in Los Angeles. Snopes rated that false. In June, a bogus claim that Pelosi was removed from the House floor for drunkenly yelling at Republicans was widely shared on social media. We rated it Pants on Fire! While that kind of misinformation has been consistently debunked, falsehoods that assert Pelosi is a drunk could have a lasting impact on those who see them. "The continued pushing of this one Nancy Pelosi narrative is not surprising," said Claire Wardle, the U.S. director of First Draft, a nonprofit organization that tracks and studies misinformation, in an email. "The way our brains work means that familiarity and repetition are two extremely powerful factors for how we process information. If you've heard something before you're more likely to consider it as true." RELATED: A voters’ guide to combating misinformation ahead of the election and beyond Another reason these kinds of false claims have staying power: They tap into age-old stereotypes about female politicians. “Portraying women as ‘unstable’ and somehow ‘unfit’ for leadership has a long, ugly pedigree,” Porter said. “These false claims advance those stereotypes; that these false claims are shared today indicate that the appetite for those stereotypes has not gone away.”

  7. Auburn vs. Texas A&M: Top Prospects, Storylines, Odds for B/R's Game of the Week David KenyonNovember 5, 2021 Butch Dill/Associated Press B/R's Game of the Week is bound for the SEC West showdown between the No. 13 Auburn Tigers and No. 14 Texas A&M Aggies. The lone Top 25 contest on the Week 10 slate, it's a matchup with considerable bowl implications. The winner will enter the final stretch as a lead contender for a New Year's Six berth, especially if both the Georgia Bulldogs and Alabama Crimson Tide represent the SEC in the College Football Playoff. Of the B/R community's 5,306 votes, Auburn/Texas A&M attracted 66.7 percent of the ballots. This clash beat out LSU vs. No. 2 Alabama (17.0 percent), No. 9 Wake Forest vs. North Carolina (9.0) and No. 5 Ohio State vs. Nebraska (7.3). Ahead, we've highlighted top NFL draft prospects to know, two major storylines and the latest betting information. Top NFL Draft Prospects 1 of 4 Sam Craft/Associated Press In a previous Game of the Week featuring Texas A&M, we included star offensive lineman Kenyon Green and defensive lineman DeMarvin Leal. Instead of repeating that, we're looking at new players. Jalen Wydermyer, TE, Texas A&M The team's leading receiver, Jalen Wydermyer has made a valuable impact since his freshman year in 2019. He owns career totals of 103 catches, 1,306 yards and 16 touchdowns. Wydermyer notched 75 yards and two scores in last weekend's win over South Carolina. Isaiah Spiller, RB, Texas A&M Devon Achane is a key contributor to Texas A&M's run-first offense, but Isaiah Spiller is the featured back. The junior has scampered for 761 yards and five touchdowns this season, rushing for at least 95 yards in six of the Aggies' eight contests this season. Spiller has also reeled in 21 passes for 179 yards and a score. Roger McCreary, CB, Auburn After passing up the 2021 NFL draft to improve his perception as a prospect, Roger McCreary has done exactly that. He's collected 32 tackles, two interceptions and eight pass breakups so far, establishing himself as one of the SEC's top corners. Major Test for Auburn Offense's Rising Balance 2 of 4 Tank BigbsyGerald Herbert/Associated Press As an offensive concept, "balance" can be overrated. Few teams ever have an ideological split of passing and rushing yards. Auburn, though, is most successful when quarterback Bo Nix is efficient and the running game is reliable. In victories over Arkansas and Ole Miss, the Tigers have posted an excellent 10.0 yards per pass attempt and serviceable 4.2 yards per carry. Nix isn't turnover-prone, but he's often been unspectacular. Prior to those two wins, he failed to crack 6.4 yards per attempt in five straight games. That frustration is nothing new to Auburn fans, and the absence of a productive passing attack has regularly made it difficult for the running game against top competition. Perhaps the recent success is the earliest sign of positive change. But the Aggies are capable of shattering that optimism. Heading into Week 10, Texas A&M ranks 13th nationally at 4.8 yards allowed per play. The Aggies have ceded only 5.9 yards per pass attempt and nine touchdowns to nine interceptions, and their run defense is a respectable 3.7 yards allowed per carry. In a raucous Kyle Field environment—one that already saw an upset of Alabama this season—Auburn needs its balance to continue. What Will A&M Need from Zach Calzada? 3 of 4 L.G. Patterson/Associated Press Relative to preseason expectations, nothing has changed. Defense has always been Texas A&M's superior unit, and the question was always how productive the offense would be. Every week, we're asking the same thing. Zach Calzada put together a career-best performance in the victory over Alabama, notching career-high marks of a 67.7 completion rate, 285 yards, three touchdowns and 9.2 yards per attempt. The best version of Calzada is clearly quite good. During the Aggies' four other SEC games, however, he's averaged just 5.9 yards per throw with five passing scores to four interceptions. Calzada has been a quarterback Texas A&M has won with, not because of. That's fine if the Aggies' rushing attack and defense is thriving too. Auburn has the nation's No. 17 run defense, though. There is a reasonable chance Spiller and Achane have a tough day. Texas A&M will lean on them and let Calzada be his typical "game manager" self. But if Auburn slows A&M's ground game, can Calzada be a playmaker? He rose to the challenge against Alabama, but not in losses to Arkansas or Mississippi State. Game Information and Odds 4 of 4 DeMarvin LealSam Craft/Associated Press When: Saturday, Nov. 6 at Noon ET Where: Kyle Field in College Station, Texas TV: CBS Stream: CBS Sports Spread (via DraftKings): Texas A&M -4.5 Total: 49 Moneyline: Texas A&M -200 (bet $200 to win $100); Auburn +170 (bet $100 to win $170)
  8. Scouting report, prediction: Auburn football visits Texas A&M team enlivened by Alabama upset Bennett Durando, Montgomery Advertiser 4-5 minutes AUBURN — Ever since Jimbo Fisher fulfilled a seemingly delusional promise to beat Alabama — made wilder by Texas A&M's apparent fall from grace before the upset — the Aggies have been on a revitalized trajectory more in line with preseason expectations. Ranked No. 6 to start the season, they barely slipped by lowly Colorado and stumbled through Arkansas and Mississippi State to an 0-2 SEC start. Then Fisher became the first former Nick Saban assistant to beat the master. Now, No. 12 Texas A&M (6-2, 3-2 SEC) has won three straight and can leapfrog Auburn in the SEC West on Saturday (2:30 p.m. CT, CBS). Auburn (6-2, 3-1) has won both SEC road games this season and has never lost at Kyle Field, even though the Aggies were a top-20 team for three of the four meetings there. Which A&M will Auburn get Saturday while trying to keep the streak alive? Here are three storylines and a prediction. DEFENSIVE HIGHLIGHTS: For Auburn's Jaylin Simpson, clutch interception was validation after injuries Isaiah Spiller presents backfield battle Auburn's run defense has held every SEC opponent below its average yards per carry this season. The latest feat was keeping Ole Miss (5.3 YPC) to an average of 4. That pattern will need to continue against Texas A&M, which also averages 5.3. Led by Isaiah Spiller — Tank Bigsby's preseason awards competitor — the Aggies run on 52% of plays. That run frequency is increased at home (55.2% of plays) and during their three-game win streak (59.5%). The talented Spiller carries most of the load and averages 6.2 yards (No. 22 FBS). Behind him, Devon Achone's 7.1-yard pace on 86 carries ranks seventh in the country. Together, they've averaged 3.6 yards after contact in the last three games. The backs excel behind an impressive offensive line that features the 6-foot-4, 325-pound Kenyon Green, a projected top-10 overall draft pick with the versatility to play guard or tackle. Calzada's anomaly Fisher's impressive follow-through on his promise is much to his quarterback's credit; Zach Calzada played the game of his life against Alabama. He finished 21-for-31 with 285 yards and three touchdowns. That's a small sample size. In Texas A&M's other six games, Calzada is 94-for-177 (53%) with nine touchdowns, six interceptions and 6.1 yards per pass attempt. He has thrown a pick in all but one game, and that was his 18-for-38 performance in a 10-7 win against Colorado. Even in recent routs against Missouri and South Carolina, he was a combined 25-for-49 with 167.5 pass yards per game. The Aggies operate mostly in short-yardage when they pass. Tight end Jalen Wydermyer is their leading receiver (353 yards, four touchdowns) and one of the SEC's best at his position. Calzada is 7-for-21 on throws of 20 or more yards. Unless the Tigers get the Alabama-game version of Calzada, Texas A&M has a pedestrian pass offense that should allow Auburn to dedicate more resources to stopping the run. SIGNIFICANT GAME: What would be a successful Year 1 for Auburn football's Bryan Harsin? The goalpost moves with every win Multi-faceted challenge on defense One week after Bigsby finally had a breakout game for Auburn with 140 rushing yards, the Tigers will face a defense a bit tougher to run against than Ole Miss. Texas A&M is No. 37 in the country and sixth in the SEC with 3.7 yards allowed per carry. DeMarvin Leal is the guy to watch. The athletic defensive lineman is another projected top-10 draft pick. He has 5.5 sacks and 35 tackles, and he's joined by the red-hot Tyree Johnson. Five of Johnson's six sacks have come in the last three games. A&M's defensive front is frightening, and its pass coverage isn't shabby, either. Opposing quarterbacks complete 60% of throws, and the Aggies are No. 8 in FBS with 5.86 yards allowed per attempt. Their 66% third-down stop rate is third in the SEC. Auburn 23, Texas A&M 20: The Aggies' offense is an ideal matchup for Derek Mason and Auburn. Expect a laborious game for Nix and company, but Texas A&M should not be a touchdown favorite.
