  2. Latest NFL rule change a reminder that kickoffs are in danger: ‘To do nothing was unacceptable’ Jori Epstein 4–5 minutes EAGAN, Minn. — NFL special teams guidelines continue to shift. Tuesday, NFL team owners approved a proposal that will allow teams that fair-catch kickoffs and safety kicks behind the 25-yard line to spot the ball at the 25-yard line. The rule will go into effect for one season on a trial basis. League officials said kickoff plays generate the highest rate of concussions every single year. Kicks hung inside the 5-yard line generated particular concern in their film study of injury incidences. “We can’t stand by and do nothing,” said Jeff Miller, NFL executive vice president of communications, public affairs and policy. “Sitting still and continuing to do nothing was unacceptable. And I think that’s where the membership came down on this.” Miller and NFL competition committee chair Rich McKay declined to provide exact data on concussion incidences in recent years, only noting that concussions on kickoffs charted much higher than other plays in their reports. Nineteen players suffered concussions in 2022, up from 14 in 2021 and 10 in 2020, according to data obtained and reported by Sports Illustrated. Those 19 concussions occurred across approximately 2,700 kickoffs – meaning 99.3% of kickoff plays were concussion-free. Special teams coaches across the league presented that data as they strongly opposed and mobilized against the rule. Some felt the resulting confusion from the rule change posed a bigger health risk than the one currently impacting 0.7% of plays. The NFL approved a rule change for the next year that will allow teams to fair catch kickoffs anywhere inside their own 25-yard line and have the ball automatically spotted at the 25. (Photo by Rey Del Rio/Getty Images) Procedural questions and challenges remain, one special teams coordinator told Yahoo Sports. “What if the ball is kicked off from the 50 after a penalty … does a fair catch still put the ball at 25?” the coach wondered in a text message. “Or if the ball is kicked off from the 20 after a penalty or safety? What if the ball is muffed (rare but will happen)? Little things but definitely some things we need to address to clean it up!” Team owners passed the ruling even so, voting during their privileged session. Dispute is to be expected, McKay said. “We tend to get ourselves to the right place,” he said of safety-related rule changes, “but it’s never that comfortable.” How likely is it that kickoff rule becomes permanent? NFL team owners did not approve this rule indefinitely. In a year, they will reassess whether to continue implementing this 25-yard line spot. The decision will factor in health and safety considerations, as well as the quality of competition. Do injuries on kickoffs decrease? How often does this rule prompt teams to return kicks inside the 25 compared to the frequency of return last year? League modeling projects a reduction from returns on 38% of kickoffs to 31%. Concussion rates on kickoffs, they predict, will drop by 15%. Modifying kickoff formats to reduce the space between teams, and thus likely the speed of the defending team’s pursuit, remains a possibility in the near future. McKay and the competition committee wonder: If kickoffs are only returned 38% of the time right now, is there an alternate format that would invite returns on more like 60% of kicks? If so, would that excite fans even more? “If we can make it a more competitive play on a play that’s becoming more ceremonial, we should always do that,” McKay said. Added Miller: “You want to make sure that play is still exciting and relevant.” Eliminating kickoffs altogether is not the committee’s current preference, but neither has it been ruled out. “We want to keep it in the game,” McKay said. “I don’t know that we know we can keep it in the game. But we want to keep it in the game.” Special teams coaches will keep their eyes peeled for their notice. “Gotta adapt fast,” the coordinator said, “and change with the times.”
  3. you are right. after lbj the dixiecrats slowly started to move to the republican party. lbj had failed the dems and they were pissed. but to believe either side was not racist is being dishonest. Byrd would not make it today and i could care less if biden gave the man an eulogy at his funeral.
  4. Open in app or online let's check in on unserious rake-stepping dipshit Jim Jordan America’s least-loved shouty half-dressed degenerate wrestling coach held another of his tiresome hearings last week Jeff Tiedrich May 22 Share let us now savor the sweet THWAP! of dorky doofus Jim Jordan stepping on the latest in a long series of rakes. America’s least-loved shouty half-dressed degenerate wrestling coach held another of his tiresome hearings last week. you’ll be forgiven if this the first you’re hearing of it, because the media pretty much ignored it. as well they should have. Upgrade to paid this time, Gym brought along some whistleblowers — honest-to-god real whistleblowers, not the imaginary James Comer kind — and oh boy, were they going to blow the living **** out of some whistles. Jordan’s vaunted whistleblowers were there to prove finally and beyond any doubt that the FBI was unfairly targeting conservatives. there was just one problem. the whistleblowers were not whistleblowers in any sense of the word. THWAP! no, these were not whistleblowers at all. these former FBI agents were a motley collection of cranks, malcontents and conspiracy loons, all of whom had lost their security clearances and been tossed out on their ears for being, let’s charitably put it, a bit s*** at their jobs. THWAP! it gets better: THWAP! as usual, Democrats came loaded with embarrassing facts. THWAP! but my favorite quote comes from this Republican, who said that gee, d’ya think? THWAP! oh Jim Jordan, you are so ******* bad at this. maybe it’s time for you to go on Fox News and change the subject. YESSSSS! ANOTHER HILLARY INVESTIGATION! what a ******* idiot. everyone is entitled to my own opinion is a reader-supported publication. 5. Kevin McCarthy is a ******* liar, and our ****hole media keeps letting him get away with it once again. the yammering dipshits on cable news refuse to take even 30 seconds to explain what’s really going on Jeff Tiedrich May 23 “If you had a child, you gave them a credit card, and they kept hitting the limit, you wouldn’t just keep increasing it.” no, Kevin McCarthy, you spineless lying ****, your manufactured debt crisis is not like giving a credit card to a child. it’s like giving a tax cut to the obscenely wealthy and then making the needy suffer more in order to pay for that tax cut. that’s exactly what it’s ******* like, because that’s exactly what it is. **** you, Kevin McCarthy, for lying your feckless face off, and **** our worthless corporate media even harder for allowing Kev and all his ****hole Republican confederates to lie and lie again, when exposing that lie would take all of five seconds. hell, I just explained right here, up there in the third paragraph. see? it’s not all that difficult. I know, we’re used to journalistic malpractice from our nation’s press. we’ve come to expect it. but once again, the stakes are incredibly high and the yammering dipshits on cable news refuse to take even 30 seconds to explain what’s really going on. instead, they’re doing their usual both-sides dance, pretending that Republicans are negotiating in good faith and even implying that it’s Joe Biden’s job to meet Republicans half way. HERE'S YOUR BOTH SIDES: one side is trying to keep the government running and the other side is deliberately trying to crash the economy. this isn’t rocket science here. it’s basic journalism. do your jobs. oh wait, we found an even simpler explanation of the debt ceiling: “when you raise the debt ceiling, that’s actually paying for stuff that has already been spent.” that’s pretty concise and easy to understand, isn’t it? know who said it? Kevin ******* McCarthy, in 2017. let’s hear that one more time: “when you raise the debt ceiling, that’s actually paying for stuff that has already been spent.” every journalist should be throwing this clip in McCarthy’s stupid lying face, twentyfourseven, nonstop, until he cuts the bull****. everyone is entitled to my own opinion is a reader-supported publication. 7. Former Auburn quarterback headed to ACC school Published: May. 22, 2023, 3:46 p.m. 2–3 minutes Former Auburn quarterback Joey Gatewood, shown here in 2019, has transferred to Louisville. He has also played at Kentucky and Central Florida. (Photo by Chris Graythen/Getty Images)Getty Images By Creg Stephenson | cstephenson@al.com Former Auburn quarterback Joey Gatewood is on the move again, this time to the ACC. Gatewood, who played for the Tigers in 2018-19, has committed to Louisville. He also played one season at Kentucky (2020) and two (2021-22) at Central Florida. Gatewood is expected to play tight end at Louisville, according to multiple reports. Including the extra year granted due to COVID, he has one season of eligibility remaining. The 6-foot-5, 230-pound Gatewood was a four-star recruit in Auburn’s 2018 signing class, drawing comparisons to Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton. The Jacksonville, Fla., native played in one game while redshirting as a true freshman, appearing late in Auburn’s rout of Purdue in the Music City Bowl. Gatewood lost out to freshman Bo Nix for Auburn’s starting quarterback job in 2019, but appeared in seven of the Tigers’ first eight games in a relief role. He left the team in late October, and eventually transferred to Kentucky. Gatewood played in six games at Kentucky in 2020 as the backup to Terry Wilson. He lost out to Penn State transfer Will Levis for the starting job in the spring of 2021, and eventually transferred to UCF. Reunited with former Auburn coach Gus Malzahn in Orlando, Gatewood played in 10 games as a backup quarterback for the Knights in 2021. He did not appear in a game last season after converting to wide receiver. In 24 career games at three schools, Gatewood has rushed for 380 yards and four touchdowns. He has completed 24 of 51 passes for 180 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. looks like yall were right. he is going to louisville to be a tightend...........
  8. al.com Ron DeSantis to launch presidential bid with Elon Musk on Twitter Spaces: Here’s when Updated: May. 23, 2023, 2:08 p.m.|Published: May. 23, 2023, 2:06 p.m. ~2 minutes Florida Gov. 14. bleacherreport.com SEC Baseball Tournament 2023: Tuesday Schedule and Bracket Predictions Joe Tansey 4–5 minutes Michael Wade/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images The 2023 SEC baseball tournament begins on Tuesday in Hoover, Alabama with four games. Five of the eight teams participating in the first round are looking to improve their positions in the NCAA baseball tournament field. The Auburn Tigers, Alabama Crimson Tide and Kentucky Wildcats are all projected as regional hosts by D1 Baseball. The South Carolina Gamecocks and Tennessee Volunteers are No. 2 seeds in the latest bracket prediction. Auburn, Tennessee and South Carolina come into Tuesday with the goal of avoiding a bad loss that would affect their NCAA tournament seeding. They take on the three worst teams that qualified for the SEC tournament. Alabama-Kentucky should be the most competitive game of the opening-round slate. The winner of that matchup gets a shot at the top-seeded Florida Gators on Wednesday. Tuesday SEC Tournament Schedule No. 11 Georgia vs. No. 6 South Carolina (10:30 a.m. ET) No. 10 Texas A&M vs. No. 7 Tennessee (30 minutes after first game) No. 9 Alabama vs. No. 8 Kentucky (5:30 p.m. ET) No. 12 Missouri vs. No. 5 Auburn (30 minutes after third game) All games televised by SEC Network. Preview Three of the four opening-round contests should be won by the higher seeds. Auburn enters Hoover in the best position of the teams participating on Tuesday. The Tigers are on an eight-game winning streak after a series win over the LSU Tigers and sweeps over the Ole Miss Rebels and Missouri Tigers. Auburn wrapped up the regular season with three wins by a combined score of 20-9 against Missouri, who it faces in Tuesday's night cap. Missouri produced an 11-16 record in road and neutral-site games this season. Its lack of success away from home and its recent set of losses versus Auburn could lead it to an early elimination. Tuesday's four winners advance into an eight-team double-elimination format. The first round is single elimination, so the four losers do not have the chance to play their way back into the final. South Carolina is the higher seed in the most danger of losing because of its recent skid. It lost two of three against Tennessee last weekend and is 2-9 in its last 11 games. The Gamecocks need a win over the Georgia Bulldogs to stabilize things and then they can focus on chasing down a regional hosting bid. South Carolina and Tennessee both need multiple victories in Hoover to have a shot at landing one of the top 16 seeds in the NCAA tournament. The good news for South Carolina and Tennessee is that one of Alabama and Kentucky will go home after Tuesday. Alabama is currently projected as the No. 14 national seed and Kentucky is No. 9 in D1 Baseball's bracket prediction. A Kentucky win would probably work better for the Gamecocks and Vols because of where the projections stand. Kentucky beat Alabama twice on March 24 and 25. The Crimson Tide won a one-run game to close out that series on March 26. Alabama is 7-1 in its last eight games and scored over 10 runs in three of their last five contests. Its bats could be the biggest story to emerge from Tuesday's games. Another strong performance at the dish could propel the team into the second round, which would give it a few shots at beating the top four sides in the SEC. Kentucky allowed 10 runs in three of its last six games and closed the regular season with series losses to Florida and Tennessee. Alabama could be catching the Wildcats at the right time, which could lead to another major offensive output. Predictions: No. 6 South Carolina def. No. 11 Georgia No. 7 Tennessee def. No. 10 Texas A&M No. 9 Alabama def. No. 8 Kentucky No .5 Auburn def. No. 12 Missouri
  15. yahoo.com What Auburn basketball's latest additions tell us about 2023-24 version of the Tigers Richard Silva, Montgomery Advertiser 4–5 minutes AUBURN — Auburn basketball may add another player to its roster for the 2023-24 season, but coach Bruce Pearl has already made his biggest splashes of the offseason. With a number of players departing the Tigers since they lost to Houston in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in March, Auburn has brought in Denver Jones (Florida International) and Chaney Johnson (Alabama-Huntsville) via the transfer portal, picked up Chad Baker-Mazara from junior college and is set to add five-star guard Aden Holloway out of Prolific Prep in Napa, California. There's no telling whether the turnover will result in a better or worse season for Auburn, but it'll certainly be different. Here's what the four newcomers tell us about what Pearl and his staff prioritized this offseason, and what it could mean for the Tigers in 2023-24. DOING BUISNESS: What Auburn AD John Cohen said about AU's deal with Under Armour TRANSFER PORTAL: What Auburn football's Hugh Freeze said about transfers Jyaire Shorter, Larry Nixon III NOT JUST YET: Despite changes, Auburn football's Hugh Freeze won't admit he's 'closed the gap' just yet Long-range shooting Despite getting hot toward the end of the regular season, Auburn was one of the worst 3-point shooting teams in the SEC last season at 31.4%. The only two schools worse were Ole Miss (30.3%) and Mississippi State (26.6%). Of players who took at least 30 3-pointers, the Tigers had just three − Tre Donaldson (40.9%), Lior Berman (35.5%) and Jaylin Williams (35.4%) − shoot above 35%. Those numbers should rise next season. Baker-Mazara shot 46.9% on nearly 4.5 attempts per game at Northwest Florida State College last season; Jones knocked down 37.1% of his triples at FIU; and Johnson, despite only make 28.9% of his threes last year, is a career 37.2% shooter. Accurate stats are few and far between for high schoolers, but Holloway hit two of his four 3-pointers in the McDonald's All-American Game in March, including one from way beyond the arc to the end the first quarter. Auburn's best shooters (Donaldson, Berman and Williams) are expected to be back. And although they brought value in different ways, the players Auburn lost − Allen Flanigan (33.3%), Wendell Green Jr. (29.5%) and Zep Jasper (28.4%) − weren't exactly marksmen from deep. Adding some height From Jared Harper to Green, Pearl has always leaned toward having a shorter player running his offense. That'll be different this year, as Holloway was measured at 6-foot-2 at the Nike Hoop Summit in April. The 6-4 Jones, who is presumed to be the starting shooting guard, is taller than Jasper (6-1). Even Baker-Mazara at 6-7 has a one-inch advantage over Flanigan. The Tigers got notably taller this offseason, which should not only add another dimension to the offense, but also improve the rebounding numbers; Johni Broome and Flanigan were the only two members of the team to average at least five boards last season. Playing through Johni Broome Broome, who was Auburn's leading scorer last season, is currently in the NBA Draft process and has until May 31 to withdraw if he'd like to return to the Tigers for another season. Assuming he does, the new additions should allow the offense to be run through him often. “There are some real statistics and real analytics out there that (say) when we get a paint touch before we take a three, or even two paint touches before we get a three, our percentages are way up," Pearl said last season. "So, inside-out 3-balls are the best 3-balls if you can get them.” With the expected improvement from 3-point range, Broome should have more room to work in the post after he kicks it out for an open triple a few times and teams become weary of doubling him. Richard Silva is the Auburn athletics beat writer for the Montgomery Advertiser. He can be reached via email at rsilva@gannett.com or on Twitter @rich_silva18.
