  2. Auburn lands JUCO defensive back Chancellor Anthony Andrew Stefaniak 2–3 minutes Auburn added some depth to the defensive back room by adding Chancellor Anthony. The Tigers have added more depth to their defensive back room Chancellor "Champ" "Pirate" Anthony has committed to the Tigers, per his social media. Anthony is a six-foot-one, 176-pound defensive back who previously played at Tyler Junior College in Texas. He is a utility guy who can really play any position in the defensive backfield that he is asked to. This is a good thing since safety is a position the coaching staff wanted to add some depth too, so if Anthony can play there, it makes this team deeper. Anthony seems extremely excited to play the rest of his college football on the Plains, which is exactly the type of guy you want on your team. Depth in the SEC is crucial, and Anthony adds that with some high upside. Anthony is a driven player who will undoubtedly crack the lineup at some point in his Auburn career.
  3. DL T.J. Lindsey 'loved every minute' of his Auburn visit Taylor Jones ~2 minutes Auburn was far down on three-star defensive lineman T.J. Lindsey’s list, but that was before a successful official visit that took place over the weekend. Lindsey, a native of Bryant, Arkansas, and a product of the prestigious IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, took his official visit to Auburn last weekend and came away impressed. He tells Steve Wiltfong of 247Sports that he enjoyed everything about the visit to Auburn and that it was “my favorite visit I’ve been on so far.” Buy Tigers Tickets “My experience was fun but very realistic and truthful,” Lindsey said of his Auburn visit. “What continues to stand out to me is the coaching staff, from Coach (Hugh) Freeze to Coach (Jeremy) Garrett.” Lindsey also says that he feels that he would be a great fit in Auburn’s defensive scheme. Lindsey is rated as a three-star defensive lineman by 247Sports and On3. As it stands, Notre Dame is the favorite to earn Lindsey’s signature according to On3’s Recruiting Prediciton Machine, with Texas A&M in a close second. The Aggies also have one crystal ball prediction to land Lindsey. Lindsey listed Auburn in his top 10 earlier this month, but after a successful visit, expect Auburn to become more of a player in Lindsey’s recruitment. 10. 247sports.com Jason Caldwells Monday morning quarterback column Jason Caldwell 4–5 minutes Important month for Auburn football Things got off to a good start for Hugh Freeze and the Auburn Tigers with the addition of DB Champ Anthony on Sunday, but the next three weeks are going to be a whirlwind for the staff and players as they tackle an extremely busy month of June. With a pair of 5-star prospects finishing up official visits on Monday along with a huge defensive lineman, Auburn’s coaches will hit the field for their first camp on the Plains with an Elite Camp scheduled for Monday afternoon. It’s the first of four elite camps this month for the Tigers. They’ll also have a pair of high school 7-on-7 camps that will have a lineman camp going on at the same time. All of those camps along with a youth camp, a kicking camp and a ladies forum will all take place in the next 10 days. Along with camps going on and unofficial visitors on campus, Auburn will also have close to 20 official visitors in the next three weekends as Freeze and the Tigers look to continue to build relationships on the recruiting trail. While it’s not the season yet, this month is about as important as it gets for this staff heading into the first year on the job. No recipe for postseason success You just never know what’s going to work for a team heading into the postseason in college baseball and that continues to be proven each and every year as the NCAA Tournament continues to become more and more unpredictable. Last season, Ole Miss swept Missouri and LSU in weeks eight and nine before dropping a series to Texas A&M the last weekend. They followed that up with a loss in the first game of the SEC Tournament. They responded by running roughshod through the field on the way to the national championship. This season you had teams that played well at the end of the year, like Auburn, that fell flat in regional play. There’s no better example than Clemson. They were 17-14 overall and 2-8 in ACC play following a loss to Florida State on April 6. Following a win over Lipscomb in the first game of their regional, the Tigers were 44-17. That’s a 27-3 record in 30 games. They proceeded to lose the next two and the season is done. Another one was Vanderbilt. A team that won two out of three against Arkansas in the final series of the year and then won four games in Hoover to win the SEC Tournament, the Commodores didn’t advance to the regional final at home in Nashville over the weekend. On the flip side you have South Carolina. The Gamecocks went 5-13 in their last 18 games heading into the NCAA Tournament, but dominated their competition in a regional on the way to the supers. There’s just no way to know what’s going to happen when you get into the NCAA Baseball Tournament, and while it doesn’t get as much attention as the Big Dance, to me there’s nothing better than this couple of weeks as far as drama and never knowing what to expect. Friday a big day for Auburn baseball After years and years of plans being made and then plans being scrapped, we are just a few days away from getting real news about updates being made at Plainsman Park. It’s something that coach Butch Thompson has talked about since arriving on the job and it’s well past due for the venue to receive a facelift and some reconstructive surgery. There have been talks about updates to the coaches’ offices and weight room areas to make room for premium seating areas underneath the stadium, premium seating areas and suites down the first base lines, seating on top of the indoor hitting facility, seats on top of the green monster, and updating the press box area at Plainsman Park. On Friday we’ll find out what has been approved and what changes that Thompson and AD John Cohen came up with to maximize the space at Plainsman Park. With construction on the first phase scheduled to begin sometime later this summer, it’s almost go-time to see what Auburn baseball’s home is going to look like in the coming years. Following the crowds inside and outside of Plainsman Park the last two years during regional play and even for most SEC weekends, it’s past time to give this program a new look.
  11. JUCO DB Champ Anthony commits to Auburn Published: Jun. 04, 2023, 9:07 p.m. 1–2 minutes By Nubyjas Wilborn | nwilborn@al.com Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze gets another transfer portal victory. Defensive back Chancellor ‘Champ’ Anthony announced on Sunday via Twitter that he intends to leave his junior college in Texas to play football at Auburn for the 2023 season under Freeze. Anthony posted 14 tackles, broke up two passes, and had an interception last season as a freshman at Tyler Junior College. He showed versatility by playing several positions in the secondary. The 6′1 176-pound defensive back will likely see time at nickel back. His height and strength allow him to cover tight ends. His speed can cover wide receivers on deep routes. Anthony had offers from BYU, North Dakota State, Old Dominion, and several others during his recruiting process when the spring window opened. Nubyjas Wilborn covers Auburn for Alabama Media Group. 12. auburnwire.usatoday.com 247Sports forecasts brutal SEC slate for Auburn in 2024 Taylor Jones 2–3 minutes The long-awaited decision regarding conference scheduling within the SEC was officially made on June 1 when the conference announced that it will keep its traditional eight-game model, but will eliminate divisions beginning in 2024. There is not a set structure regarding permanent opponents and rotations, however, as the eight-game model will be evaluated after the 2024 season. After facing the likes of Alabama and LSU in the western division every season since 1992, will Auburn catch a break with the SEC’s new division-less system? Brad Crawford of 247Sports does not see that happening. Buy Tigers Tickets Following the announcement from the SEC, Crawford took time to predict Auburn’s 2024 SEC slate, and it is anything but easy. Crawford projects the Tigers to get its usual dose of Alabama, Georgia, and LSU, followed by four teams that reached bowl games during the 2022 season. Here’s how Crawford predicts Auburn’s “nightmare” conference slate to appear: Texas Missouri South Carolina LSU at Georgia at Alabama at Mississippi State at Kentucky This prediction, if true, will be “business as usual” for Auburn, as the Tigers have grown accustomed to facing Alabama, Georgia, and LSU every season. Mixing in teams that have built a reputation for consistent bowl play in Mississippi State, South Carolina, and Kentucky, and Hugh Freeze will have quite the challenge as he works to rebuild the program. Welcoming SEC newcomer, Texas, to Jordan-Hare Stadium will be a nice touch, as the Longhorns have not visited the Plains since 1987. Auburn, as well as the rest of the SEC, will learn about its 2024 opponents on Wednesday, June 14. 13. John Wayne Oliver, sought-after 2024 OT from Nashville, names 2 SEC teams in top 3 Andrew Olson ~1 minute John Wayne Oliver has picked up 27 scholarship offers during his recruitment. The Christ Presbyterian Academy offensive lineman is narrowing things down. On Sunday, Oliver named 2 SEC programs in his top group. Oliver’s top 3 features Auburn, Ole Miss and TCU. Oliver measures 6-5, 285 pounds. On the 247Sports composite rankings, Oliver is rated 3-stars, the No. 13 Tennessee product, No. 39 offensive tackle and No. 540 prospect overall nationally in the 2024 recruiting class. Oliver has already checked out Auburn and Ole Miss on unofficial visits. He has official visits scheduled at Ole Miss and TCU for the next 2 weekends. Junior season highlights of Oliver playing on both lines can be viewed below, via Hudl:
  14. PFF ranks Gunner Britton as one of the best returning offensive linemen in the SEC JD McCarthy ~2 minutes Hugh Freeze has done a great job flipping Auburn’s roster ahead of his first season on the Plains and perhaps the position where he has done the most work is along the offensive line, where the Tigers have landed nine newcomers this offseason. One of the biggest additions is transfer offensive tackle Gunner Britton, who spent the past five seasons at Western Kentucky. He started 14 games for the Hilltoppers last season and is poised to be the Tigers starting right tackle for the 2023 season. Buy Tigers Tickets The 6-foot-6, 305-pounder was one of the top players in the transfer portal and PFF has him graded as one of the top returning offensive linemen in the SEC, his grade of 78.6 is the fourth highest among returning players. He is one of four transfers Auburn has landed along the offensive line and all have a good shot at starting. With Britton anchoring the right tackle spot, Dillon Wade (Tusla) is expected to start at left tackle with Avery Jones (ECU) playing enter and Jaden Muskrat (Tulsa) battling for one of the guard spots. 15. Sharon Kennedy: The metamorphosis of a political party Sharon Kennedy 4–5 minutes Many readers are familiar with Kafka’s novella, “The Metamorphosis.” It was my least favorite work by that author because I was too young to grasp its meaning. I thought it was disgusting. For those readers who’ve never heard of it, here’s a brief synopsis: A salesman awakens one morning and realizes he’s metamorphosed into a cockroach. He suffers various trials and is ultimately rejected by his family. Eventually, he dies of starvation. That, in a tiny nutshell, is the gist of the story without all the psychological, social and familial implications associated with it. Those implications have been debated since the novella was published in 1915 and will continue to be discussed in the classrooms of 2023 and beyond. Kafka’s salesman, Gregor Samsa, was just an ordinary man. He wasn’t spectacular in any way. At first he was confused, dismayed and embarrassed by his transformation from a human being to a bug. He was angry, but given time he became accustomed to his new appearance. Although Kafka’s work was the idea for this musing, it’s not his story that intrigued me as much as how quickly we accepted the metamorphosis of a political party. Human nature is a fascinating study in contradictions. We’re capable of holding opposing dichotomies as true. On one hand, we cling to traditional values and on the other, we embrace the absurd. In 2016, the GOP quickly adjusted to its new state of being. I’m not implying all extreme right-wingers became cockroaches overnight. That would be ridiculous and false. What I am saying is an ordinary salesman — much like Samsa — morphed into something abnormal but instead of being rejected, he was embraced. We might be disgusted by a lump of larva, but when it becomes a butterfly, we admire it. The same is not true of fly larvae, i.e. maggots, but that’s another story. Much like the growth stages of an insect, the transformation of the GOP was gradual. The first stage might have repulsed us like larva does due to its sliminess, but given enough time the end result far exceeded anything we’d ever known. If fearless political contenders had crushed the MAGA movement in its early stage, would it have morphed into a group of dissentients that included elected representatives? Has the movement encouraged politicians and militant groups to unravel our capitalist republic? The metamorphosis of a political party That position created a 15-minute tempest while his “dismantling democracy” statement was basically ignored. It takes time for insects to reach their full potential. So, too, it takes time for the transformation of government to slip from one form to another. It’s a process most of us don’t have time to investigate. We’re busy trying to make ends meet, keep the kids off drugs, recover from natural disasters and countless other things. Who has time to delve into the inner workings of our republic when we’re struggling to maintain peace in our home and keep the family together? Almost nobody, and therein lies the rub. Our leaders know we can’t be bothered checking up on them. If they do return our calls, we’re fobbed off as a nuisance. The metamorphosis is complete. The cockroaches are rapidly multiplying and posing serious threats to our republic. So where do we go from here? — To contact Sharon Kennedy, send her an email at authorsharonkennedy.com. Kennedy's new book, "View from the SideRoad: A Collection of Upper Peninsula Stories," is available from her or Amazon. for those that donot read this tubs says it is time to try something other than democracy. just wow.

  17. Montgomery Real-Time News Man charged in deaths of Rod and Paula Bramblett allegedly used synthetic urine to fool drug test Updated: Jun. 02, 2023, 9:32 p.m.| Published: Jun. 02, 2023, 9:06 p.m. 111 shares By Howard Koplowitz | hkoplowitz@al.com The man charged in the 2019 deaths of the Auburn announcer Rod Bramblett and his wife, Paula, in a wreck is facing more charges Friday for allegedly using synthetic urine to fool a drug test in an unrelated case, court records showed. Johnston Edward Taylor, who was 16 years old when he was charged with manslaughter in the deaths of the Brambletts, has been in the Lee County Jail since January for failing a drug test stemming from unrelated child pornography charges. Taylor, now 20, was granted youthful offender status in the manslaughter cases. Sentences in youthful offender status cases are not made public, although whatever punishment he received carried a three-year maximum term. On Friday, Taylor “used a bottle of urine that had a hand warmer attached to the bottle,” according to the complaint filed against him in Lee County Circuit Court. The complaint said the purpose of the synthetic urine was to “defraud an alcohol, drug or urine screening test.” The drug test was required as a condition of Taylor’s bond after he was charged with six counts of possession of child pornography in June 2022. Taylor is also seeking youthful offender status in the child porn cases. A hearing is set for July 18 on the request. His bond was revoked in January after failing a drug test, according to an order by Lee County Circuit Court Judge Russell Bush. Taylor was 16 on May 25, 2019 when he was traveling south in the outside lane on Shug Jordan Parkway approaching West Samford Avenue in his Jeep Laredo. The Brambletts, in a 2017 Toyota Highlander, were stopped in the southbound outside lane of Shug Jordan parkway at a traffic light. The Jeep struck the Bramblett’s SUV to the right of center, according to the crash report. The impact caused the Jeep to hit a pedestrian and a traffic light pole before coming to a final rest. The Bramblett’s vehicle was pushed into the intersection and through the opposing lanes of traffic before coming to a final rest on the curb. Taylor’s “blood sample contained THC, which is the primary psychoactive component of marijuana, and is indicative of recent usage of marijuana at the time of the collision,” records state. The teen was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Paula Bramblett, 53, was airlifted from the scene but had to be diverted to East Alabama Medical Center due to the severity of her injuries. She was pronounced dead in the emergency room from multiple internal injuries. Rod Bramblett, 52, who was the driver of the Highlander, was airlifted to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, where he later died from a closed head injury. At the time of the deadly crash, Taylor was driving 89 mph in a 55-mph zone, under the influence of marijuana, and still accelerating, authorities said, when he rammed into the back of the couple’s SUV. A judge in April of 2021 granted Taylor youthful offender status in the manslaughter cases. Lee County Circuit Judge P.B. McLauchlin, a retired judge handling the case, in his order said, “At the time of the accident the defendant was a 16-year-old teenager with no prior criminal history, who had smoked or used marijuana and had been diagnosed with marijuana use disorder,’’ McLauchlin wrote. “None of this justifies what happened; however, it does lend itself to treatment as a Youthful Offender.” The youthful offender status eliminates a jury trial, if there is a trial, and the range of punishment goes from two to 20 years had he been tried as an adult to zero to three years maximum. Youth offender cases are sealed, so the outcome of that case is not made public.
