  1. si.com Auburn football gains prediction to land four-star ATH Malcolm Simmons Lance Dawe ~2 minutes The Tigers are on a roll in recruiting. The Tigers are looking to have a massive week in recruiting. Demarcus Riddick, a five-star linebacker in the 2024 class, flipped from Georgia to Auburn on Wednesday afternoon. It's the Tigers' first five-star commitment since the 2019 cycle. Now, with Big Cat weekend in just a couple of days, Auburn is looking to capitalize on their momentum. Auburn recruiting insider Jeffery Lee of Auburn Live has logged an expert prediction for the Tigers to land 4-star athlete Malcolm Simmons, per On3 Recruits. The 6-foot, 165-pound athlete is the No. 365 overall player in the 247Sports composite rankings. The Tigers kick off the 2023 season on September 2nd at home vs UMass at 2 p.m. CT on ESPN.
  2. auburntigers.com On The Plains with Avery Jones: ‘Living a dream' Auburn University Athletics 7–8 minutes AUBURN, Ala. – After two years as a starter at center for the East Carolina Pirates and a veteran of play in both Conference USA and the ACC, graduate transfer Avery Jones has come to Auburn to see what life along the offensive line is like in the SEC. The affable student-athlete, who will be a key component of the new-look offensive line for Auburn this season, is excited because he already loves Auburn and has always loved football. “Where I’m from – Havelock, North Carolina – it’s a football small town,” Jones proudly proclaimed of his hometown Havelock Rams, who won the Coastal 3A conference championship and were state runners-up during his career. “Before I got to the high school, they had won three state championships in a row. We’ve got a lot of tradition in football. “My mom Sandra and her side of the family (the Fraziers) are big football fans, so I have a lot of uncles and cousins who played football. “And I was always a big kid so everybody was like, “He’s playing football!” So, that’s what I did. And I’ve enjoyed it.” The football family tradition will continue for another generation. “I have an older sister, Brianna, and a nephew, Braylon – he and I are buddies – and he’s going to be a big kid, so he’ll play football,” Jones said. “My family will definitely be coming to some games; my mom is my Aunt Cathy’s caregiver since she had a stroke in 2020, but I have plenty of family who will be here.” Why did Jones choose Auburn as his home for the next leg of his journey? “I wanted to be at a place where football really matters, and Auburn is that spot,” he said. “The fans, the environment, the stadium and to get to play against teams like Georgia and Alabama – that’s living a dream for me. “When I decided to hit the portal, I was originally committed to Illinois, but Hugh Freeze called me and I took a visit. I loved the facilities and what the coaches were telling me about the development of the offensive line and what I could do for the program. “And, of course, they emphasized the SEC, what playing in the SEC really means. It was a hard opportunity to turn down. And I don’t like the cold,” he laughed. “I came to Auburn in January and I settled in pretty well right away. All the coaches were real inviting to me, so it didn’t seem too hard to get to know people,” explained Jones, who transferred from North Carolina to East Carolina after two seasons. “In a transition, getting to know people is what I think is most important when you go to a new spot. I’m not the only new guy; I had a few classes with Mosiah (Nasili-Kite) and Nick Mardner so I got to know them. And I’m around the o-line every day, so I know them well. Everyone here has made it very easy to get comfortable and acclimated in my new environment. “I’m a global studies major and I’m taking classes for a second undergrad degree here at Auburn. At North Carolina, I was a sports administration major, but when I got to East Carolina, I didn’t have enough credits that would transfer, so I got my degree in communications. I like sports and want to stay involved in some fashion, maybe as a coach, a strength coach or a personal trainer after I finish playing. “After I graduated from ECU, I wanted to go for a new challenge,” said Jones, who received his bachelor’s degree from East Carolina last December, adding that many players take advantage of the NCAA transfer portal for positive reasons that aren’t always portrayed that way to the fans. “People just hold a strong love for their particular school, and they can’t fathom that the players would look for something else. “It can be that you graduated, like I did, and want a new challenge – even though I will always support ECU. Or sometimes, you don’t land at the spot that you thought it was during recruiting. If it’s not working out, you shouldn’t have to stay there for the rest of your career. And sometimes, the school or the coaches change. At my first school, North Carolina, we had a coaching change and we just didn’t gel, so it was good to start fresh.” Jones’ goals factored into his decision to become an Auburn Tiger. “I want to be all-conference and I want to win the SEC, be a team in the playoffs,” he said. “I think Auburn can do that. I don’t think we have to wait. “Then I want to get drafted and go to the NFL. I have all those goals and that’s one of the main reasons I left ECU. I felt like I needed to challenge myself on the biggest stage and prove myself against the best of the best.” And things have been working out for the best for Jones so far. “I’ve been really happy with my choice of coming to Auburn,” he said of his experience since January. “I love the South and am glad to stay in the South, so it wasn’t a huge transition from North Carolina to Alabama. “Auburn is a nice relaxing area – it’s got a lot of little food spots, so I bring my girlfriend Ayanna out to eat a lot. She graduated from North Carolina and lives here with me. She just took her MCATs and is applying to med schools. Otherwise, I like playing video games and I like watching barbeque shows. I like to say I can cook a little bit and I like barbeque.” The Jones household also includes a pampered pet. “I’ve got a little black pomapoo that weighs 10 pounds named Ash. He’s about 2 years old. People often laugh at me when I walk around with him, and he does have a little Auburn jersey he will wear on gamedays.” Gamedays – and all the work that leads up to them – are Jones’ focus as the Tigers prepare to open preseason practices on Aug. 3, getting ready for Kickoff on The Plains against UMass. “I’m definitely excited for the first game, walking into the stadium and hearing all the fans shout War Eagle,” he said. “I’m just excited to get going.”
  3. auburnwire.usatoday.com Auburn has a chance to sign its best linebacker class in a decade JD McCarthy 3–4 minutes On Wednesday Auburn landed its highest-rated commit since 2019 when they successfully flipped five-star linebacker Demarcus Riddick from the Georgia Bulldogs. Riddick is the headliner of Auburn’s 2024 recruiting class and is further proof that Hugh Freeze and Co. can now win recruiting battles with Alabama and Georgia, something you have to do if you want to compete in the SEC. Buy Tigers Tickets A ton of credit also goes to linebackers coach Josh Aldridge, who has landed several top targets but his pursuit of Riddick is the most impressive. He had a ton of ground to make up as the previous staff had not yet offered Riddick when he committed to the Bulldogs. Aldridge quickly extended an offer and after a full-court press, the Tigers pulled off the flip. He is the second linebacker that Auburn has beaten Georgia for this cycle, just last month they landed four-star linebacker Joseph Phillips, beating out the Bulldogs for the talented but raw linebacker. The duo of Riddick and Phillips has made linebacker one of the strengths of Auburn’s 2024 recruiting class and the addition of three-star D'Angelo Barber makes it one of Auburn’s best hauls at linebacker in years. While there is still plenty of time left before any of them can sign, the Tigers haven’t signed three or more high-school linebackers in the same cycle since 2020 when they landed four-star prospects Wesley Steiner, Cam Riley and Desmond Tisdol and three-star Romello Height. What separates the 2024 class from that group is that both Riddick (No. 26) and Phillips (No. 132) are top 150 prospects while only Steiner (No. 98) was from the 2020 haul. The 2019 class, consisting of five-star Pappoe, four-star Derick Hall and three-stars Octavious Brothers and Kameron Brown, also has a case as the best in recent history. As it currently stands, these two classes are extremely similar. Both are headlined by a five-star with a second top prospect who projects more as a pass-rusher but is capable of playing linebacker. With the 2019 class having one more member, it has more depth and is slightly better. With Auburn not signing any linebackers last year they are in need of a large class, making it likely they will add at least one or two more players and Aldrige has the Tigers in a great spot with two more targets, four-star Bradley Shaw and three-star Wyatt Simmons. If they add Shaw it will give them three blue-chip linebackers, something they have only twice in the past 10 cycles, the 2020 class and in 2015 when they landed Richard McBryde, Jeff Holland and Darrell Williams. While that class also included three-star Robert Muschamp, it lacked a five-star prospect to compare with Riddick. Due to the top-end talent of Riddick and Phillips and the depth of Barber, Auburn’s 2024 class is on the verge of being the best the Tigers have signed in the past 10 cycles, if they can add one or both of Shaw and Simmons then it will jump past the 2019 and 2015 classes and undoubtedly be the best linebacker class in the past decade. 9. al.com Auburn football recruiting: What to look for during Big Cat Weekend Updated: Jul. 28, 2023, 9:29 a.m.|Published: Jul. 28, 2023, 9:21 a.m. 4–5 minutes On the heels of the commitment from 5-star linebacker Demarcus Riddick on Wednesday, Hugh Freeze and the Auburn Tigers couldn’t ask for more momentum as they head towards Big Cat Weekend, Auburn’s annual recruiting event. Now, the big question is whether the Tigers can keep the momentum. And given the probable list of those who intend to visit The Plains Saturday, it’s possible Freeze and Co. pull some more surprises and claim the commitments of some of their top targets. And, based on who’s slated to attend, Riddick might not be the only flip the Tigers force. Here’s a look at some of the names to watch for heading into Big Cat Weekend. 2024 5-star ATH KJ Bolden Coming out of Buford, Ga., KJ Bolden is listed as a blue chip athlete, but is primarily being recruited as a safety. Bolden, who recruiting services tend to believe is leaning towards Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs, hasn’t committed to any of his 40 offers, which include 11 of the 14 programs currently in the SEC. Bolden also holds offers from Oklahoma and Texas. Earlier this month, Bolden unveiled his Top 5 schools, which included Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, Georgia and Ohio State. Bolden also set his commitment date for August 5. With Bolden’s plan to announce his commitment quickly approaching, expect Freeze and the Auburn coaching staff to push hard to secure the nation’s top safety this weekend. 2024 5-star WR Perry Thompson Perry Thompson, the 5-star wide receiver from Foley High School in Gulf Shores, is currently committed to Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide and has been since late June. However, as Auburn taught us earlier in the week, no flip is too big to pull off. Ironically, when Riddick made his pledge to the Tigers Wednesday, there was a lot of interaction between he and Thompson, who publicly congratulated Riddick and send out other cryptic signs that riled up Auburn fans. It’s worth noting that Alabama’s equivalent recruiting event is also this weekend, but Thompson will be on The Plains, he announced on Twitter July 2. Thompson is ranked the fourth-best wide receiver in the country by both On3 and 247Sports and is the second-most coveted prospect out of the state of Alabama. 2024 4-star OL DeAndre Carter The Auburn Tigers have set to earn the commitment of an offensive lineman in the 2024 cycle, which makes DeAndre Carter, a Santa Ana, Calif. native, a big priority coming into Big Cat Weekend. Stretching 6-foot-4 and weighing 320 pounds, Carter is ranked as the nation’s top interior offensive lineman and boasts offers from 28 programs, including the likes of Auburn, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Michigan State, Texas and USC. Big Cat Weekend will be Carter’s second visit to The Plains after taking an official visit on June 16 — just nine days after he was offered by the Tigers. 2024 4-star ATH Malcolm Simmons If Freeze and the Auburn Tigers want to establish themselves a big recruiting threat, they’ve gotta start by winning the battles in their backyard. And that could start with 4-star athlete Malcolm Simmons, who hails from right down the road in Alexander City, Ala. Evidently, Freeze thinks a lot of Simmons considering he offered him when still at Liberty. Simmons’ trip to Auburn will be his second after unofficially visiting in September of 2022 under Bryan Harsin’s staff. However, Simmons wasn’t offered by the Tigers until April, after Freeze had taken over. 2025 5-star EDGE Zion Grady Zion Grady, who ranks as the No. 2 edge rusher in the country in the 2025 class, listed Auburn in his Top 10 on July 23. The Tigers are joined by Alabama, Arizona, Florida State, Georgia, Michigan, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas and USC. Coming out of Troy, Ala., the push for Grady is another example of Freeze pushing hard to establish Auburn as a recruiting power within state lines — something the last coaching staff at Auburn neglected to do. Though Grady is a part of the 2025 cycle, there’s no such thing as building a strong class too early. 13. yahoo.com Big Cat preview: Here are this year’s top 10 attendees Taylor Jones ~4 minutes The biggest recruiting weekend is here. A plethora of talent from across the country will be on the Plains this weekend to attend Big Cat Weekend, which will be a crucial time for Hugh Freeze and staff as they look to build their roster for the future. Many members of Auburn’s 2024 commitments will be there such as Walker White, Joseph Phillips, A'mon Lane, and J'Marion Burnette. Those players have publically announced that they have shut down their recruitment in an effort to help the coaching staff recruit players to join them at Auburn. This weekend will be a great measuring stick to see just how good their recruiting efforts are. There will be plenty of talented players on campus this weekend, some are even committed to other programs. Here’s a look at the top recruits who are scheduled to visit Big Cat Weekend. KJ Bolden Bolden is one week away from announcing his commitment, and if Auburn wants to seal the deal, they will need to do so this weekend. The Tigers will need to battle Alabama, Ohio State, and home-state school Georgia to land the No. 1 safety in the 2024 class. Perry Thompson The top committed player to attend this weekend is Alabama commit Perry Thompson. After Auburn flipped Demarcus Riddick from Georgia, most feel that Thompson could be the next one to do so. Riddick will also be at Big Cat Weekend, could he do enough to sway Thompson to Auburn? Bradley Shaw Keeping talent in-state is something that Hugh Freeze is working towards. One of the biggest names in the state of Alabama for the 2024 cycle is Hoover linebacker Bradley Shaw, and things are looking great as Shaw tells multiple outlets that Auburn makes him a priority. He has zero crystal ball predictions from 247Sports as of now, but Auburn, Alabama, and Notre Dame appear at the front of the pack. DeAndre Carter Auburn is in need of offensive linemen for the 2024 class, and landing the 6-4, 340-pound product from California would be a great start. Making a great impression this weekend is crucial for Auburn. Jalewis Solomon The four-star corner will commit next weekend, which means that Auburn will need to make a lasting impression this weekend in order to land the talented defensive back. Malcolm Simmons Could Simmons be Auburn’s next commit? The Alexander City product loves Auburn, and Auburn loves him back. The deal could be sealed for Auburn and the four-star wide receiver this weekend. Zaquan Patterson Patterson was recently named a five-star safety, which would mesh well with Auburn’s 2024 haul of A’Mon Lane, Jayden Lewis, Jayln Crawford, and Kensley Faustin in the defensive backfield. Duke Watson It wasn’t long after Watson committed to Louisville for Auburn to extend an offer. The Tigers have a four-star RB in J’Marion Burnette but are looking to take another for the 2024 class. Watson is the top option now for Auburn, as the four-star from Forsyth, Georgia is coming to town for the weekend. Zion Grady Grady is heading into his junior season at Charles Henderson in Troy, but he has already gained plenty of attention on the recruiting trail. He is a five-star EDGE and is the No. 6 player from the state of Alabama for the 2025 cycle. If Auburn were to land Grady, it would definitely help build depth at EDGE. JaKaleb Faulk His brother, Keldric Faulk, was a late flip to Auburn from Florida State. The youngest Faulk is a four-star LB and is near the top of Auburn’s board for the 2025 cycle.

  15. rollingstone.com Trump Employee Charged in Classified Docs Case Nikki McCann Ramirez 3–4 minutes Trump Tried to Delete Mar-a-Lago Security Footage to Thwart Investigators Special Counsel Jack Smith has leveled additional charges against Trump, Walt Nauta, and a third Mar-a-Lago employee for mishandling classified docs The Justice Department has brought additional charges against former president Donald Trump alleging that Trump and two of his employees conspired to destroy Mar-a-Lago surveillance footage requested by federal authorities. In the new superseding indictment, Carlos de Oliveira, a maintenance worker at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, joins Trump and his aide Walt Nauta as a defendant in the case brought by the Justice Department in June. The new charges against the former president and his employees include “Corruptly Altering, Destroying, Mutilating or Concealing a Document, Record, or Other Object,” as well as “Altering, Destroying, Mutilating, or Concealing an Object.” Prosecutors allege that on June 25, 2022, the day after investigators had requested “[a]ny and all surveillance records, videos, images, photographs and/or CCTV from internal cameras” at certain locations at the Mar-a-Lago Club, de Oliveira met with a Mar-a-Lago IT employee, allegedly at Nauta’s direction. De Oliveira allegedly told the employee something to the effect of “the boss” wanting the server containing the security footage “deleted.” The employee replied that he would need to reach out to his supervisor. The indictment claims that de Oliveira spoke multiple times on the phone with Trump, including a conversation in which Trump promised he’d get de Oliveira an attorney. According to a June CNN report, de Oliveira was seen in surveillance footage helping Nauta move boxes out of a storage room that was later examined by investigators and Trump’s attorneys. De Oliveira is charged separately for allegedly lying to the FBI in a voluntary interview. The indictment includes a snippet of an interview transcript. When questioned about whether he’d taken part in moving around Trump’s presidential boxes, de Oliveira repeatedly said, “No,” adding that he, “Never saw nothing.” Last month, the former president pleaded not guilty to 42 federal counts related to his handling of classified material. The previous charges leveled against Trump include conspiracy to obstruct justice, corruptly concealing a record or document, concealing a document in a federal investigation, scheme to conceal, false statements and representations. Read the full updated indictment here: Trending This story was updated at 7:45 p.m. to include additional details regarding charges brought against Trump, Walt Nauta, and Carlos de Oliveira.
